When had she ever left Fox News?

A source of more absolute joy (and horror & rage) in these shitshow years of our politics and the insane turmoil of our social/cultural realms, than anyone else I’ve read. Thank you Marina.

I love the rather quaint idea that Morgan has scruples about honesty, truth and fairness.

Precisely. Until he apologises for his deliberate ruination of our public realm, nothing he says has any integrity or true value. And he never will. Yuk.

As Peter Cook famoudly observed, satire and invective don’t tend to alter world affairs or stop despots in their tracks, but it’s still balm for the nervous system to read Trump’s foulness being summed up with such relish. acgrayling.substack.com/p/date-zero?...

I’m really hoping that at least one of them, Chatsworth perhaps, will find a way to visually celebrate the patterns of the former parterres as revealed by drought. Saw Vaux le Viconte pick out the pattern of its parterres in white lights one winter, which worked well as a temporary intervention.

Just look at yourselves. Please desist from joining the Meghan gravy train, which, in the UK’s collective media hive mind, wishes her nothing but ill, the more catastrophic the better. She is, as the King reminded us today, a private citizen.

‘There are great people on both sides’ tends to be the Trumpian gloss on monstrous murderous shits, whether it’s on the steps of the Capitol or initiating the invasion of a sovereign nation.

This is, objectively, the funniest UK media headline I’ve ever seen. Utterly glorious. The dog ate his homework too.

And it will of course be named the Trump Ballroom, & it will be as tacky, fake & architecturally illiterate as all his other buildings. I very much hope that any future president not in hock to his idolaters, renames it the people’s hall & invites every marginalised group to host fundraisers there.

What is the gaping hole in these people’s sense of adequacy that Britain has to keep ‘being best’? Is it doing badly at games on the playing fields of Eton while simultaneously being taught that they are destined to be kings of the world? And do all their absurdly pompous assertions fill the hole?

Oh come on; only £9k to be in the company of such a glorious* exemplar of the master race, a physical & intellectual colossus* to be ranked alongside Thor, Wotan or…um…Adolf? A bargain! *other terms are available.

I think so many of us were fearing it, but how gently kind of him to have stated it so clearly. But the mob smelt blood, and once the game’s afoot, I’m appalled to reflect that only a victim who can no longer fight back will satiate the frenzy. And on everyone will go, pretending they were not there

People seem to enjoy the idea of ‘the smack of firm government’ until it (metaphorically speaking) lands on their own head. Then it’s an outrage.

I feel great empathy for the pain of victims & relatives, but I believe a fair, properly funded (clearly not currently) legal system should not be dictated to by personal pain or whipped-up media/online mob sentiment. If candidates for early release are a danger, don’t release them. Not? Then do.

We live in a world currently driven by Trump’s id. It’s all he has & all he knows, and his absolute embodiment of it is the secret of his support; he gives permission to indulge our every whim, vice, passing desire without shame, in the quest for instant gratification. Ego & superego be damned.

I realise that I’m more revolted by Liddle’s output if it was in essence banter for cash, rather than an expression of his innate character & views (yuk too, but at least in some sense true to him). And as you say, tributes are coming mostly from people who clearly shared many of his stated views.

I’ve given lectures in a really wide range of venues over the decades, from damp, asbestos-riddled village halls to swish American museums; I think today’s, at Chester’s Picturehouse, has the biggest screen I’ve ever worked with. Debo writ very very large.

Ruskin’s word, illth, to mean the kind of ‘wealth’ that is selfish, greedy, extractive & hoarded, is useful here. So many of the current overlords of C21st tech, AI & media are men of illth, not wealth, & Trump is the King of it. As they’ll discover on their deathbeds, ‘There is no wealth but life’.

I agree that retrospective awareness of an unspoken (because the language did not exist) diagnosable set of behaviours can be illuminating. I’d say the same of John Ruskin for example. And, for that matter, my own father, aged 88, understood afresh in the light of my children’s diagnoses.

Has it occurred to Allison that she may not be the kind of voter Burnham has in his sights?

I do indeed, and everyone in Salford must be delighted to be ahead of the game. I still think that the Westminster media eco-system is experiencing whiplash that prime ministerial activity, policy and pronouncements might consistently come from outside Whitehall.

It’s London-based media still slightly stunned that power might genuinely be exerted from somewhere other than SW1, isn’t it?

I agree that discourse and robust discussion essential, even more so in this regressive age of Reform, the ghouls at ‘Restore Trust’, and the continued entrenchment of wealth (whether inherited or newly made) and its power. Really hope the book comes to fruition.

As you know, I support a number of yr arguments about the aristo ‘industry’ but 2 things here: 1) this initiative (for good or ill) was Chatsworth’s, not Reform’s. 2) no one has to visit. I know you feel deference/brain washing plays its part & u abhor tax arrangements, but visitors also complicit?

Anyone can pre-book time in the print room at the @ashmoleanmuseum.bsky.social in Oxford. Today, with a group as part of my work, we had access to get up close with works on paper by John Ruskin. Astonishing drawings/watercolours.
