Amused by the quiet mage’s obvious excitement, Himmel followed them into a small room. Based on the book-lined shelves, it was a library. And near the window, putting a thick tome back in place, stood a petite woman with white hair styled into two loose braids. That was all he could register before she turned at the siblings’ approach.

The ground tilted beneath Himmel’s feet—No, that wasn’t right. The floor hadn’t moved. It remained level, just as he remained upright. He wasn’t falling. He was just disoriented. But why—

Bright green eyes took him in. Knowing eyes. Mysterious eyes.

Eyes that were set in a face that was anything but old.
