Rehabbed an old, beat-up, near-dead iPod with a new battery, SD card and new case. Challenging, but fun weekend project!

Spontaneity is a key ingredient of joy and it’s very difficult to feel much joy watching sports anymore because every time something happens, you have to stop and wait while a bunch of fucking lawyers look at monitors for five minutes to decide whether or not the thing you saw happen, happened

Excellent commentary. As a non-tenured prof in a red state I'm acutely aware of the risks I take in teaching certain concepts. But, many tenured profs are indifferent to free speech and politicians are aware that that lack of solidarity can be exploited to marginalize and dismiss those who speak up

I sincerely do not give a damn about improving your business. Take the money and leave me alone.

A friend shared this poem and it's been haunting me. Good Bones, by Maggie Smith
Words of the poem Good Bones, by Maggie Smith

Life is short, though I keep this from my children.
Life is short, and I’ve shortened mine
in a thousand delicious, ill-advised ways,
a thousand deliciously ill-advised ways
I’ll keep from my children. The world is at least
fifty percent terrible, and that’s a conservative
estimate, though I keep this from my children.
For every bird there is a stone thrown at a bird.
For every loved child, a child broken, bagged,
sunk in a lake. Life is short and the world
is at least half terrible, and for every kind
stranger, there is one who would break you,
though I keep this from my children. I am trying
to sell them the world. Any decent realtor,
walking you through a real shithole, chirps on
about good bones: This place could be beautiful,
right? You could make this place beautiful.

I reached midterm, then I got halfway from midterm to the end of the semester, and with Thanksgiving still two weeks away I feel like I'm stuck in Zeno's Paradox

drcolin.net - Your Students Do Not Deserve Your Cynicism
It's that time of the semester. In mid-November we all get a bit frazzled - the semester's been running forever and yet the end still feels far away. For students reality is setting in - the stakes ar...

"WVU’s enrollment has dropped 10 percent since 2015, far worse than the national average and unusual particularly for a flagship university." Gordon Gee has been president throughout this trend, yet the Board extended his contract, while people who had no role in the decline lose jobs. Infuriating

WVU professors get their layoff notices
Amid the sweeping elimination of degree offerings and faculty members’ jobs at West Virginia University, professors are left with possibly hopeless appeals.
