[re: she rah, transmisogyny] A not uncommon thing to encounter in queer media is there are a bunch of nuanced and well realized queer characters of various descriptions... and then dr. Frank-N-Further is also there.

Really the fundamental problem with generations as a concept is that peopls are born every year, if we all just took a break for a couple of years every now and then, we'd have more clearly delineated generations. The same thing is true for decades, we have a year every year so there's always […]

[she rah, transmisogyny] Apart from the whole "is an alien shapeshifter from another planet" business, Double Trouble from She-rah is probably the most direct representation of me in fiction, which is why it's a little irksome they are possibly the only truly amoral character in the entire show […]

@thevhswizard One variant I've seen is when the the demonic entity invades someone who already has an entity in their brain for unrelated reasons, so from the demons perspective they invade this weak-willed guy and then there's a really strong entity in there that's like "hello, I'm gonna kick […]

@thevhswizard A variant I find particularly funny is when the demon invades someone with poor eyesight and it somehow doesn't occur to them to just wear glasses, either because they are an ancient demon that predates corrective eyewear or because they don't think they can be taken seriously as […]

I think a big part of the difference is that himbos are typically very unpretentious, they don't really care about being the smartest person in the room. With bimbo as an archetype... honestly, most of the time they don't have enough inferiority to be unpretentious, but if they are […]

I think what gets me about the "himbo" archetype is that while it is correctly identifying a common character archetype, it does not actually resemble a gender-flipped version of "bimbo" very much. "himbo" is distinct enough that you can genderflip himbo and get a female character archetype […]

[re: Star vs the Forces of Evil spoilers] What I mean by unravel the fiction is like pushing some element of the story past the point of believeability so that people are confronted by the fact that what they are watching is a story. The Steven Universe finale is a pretty good example of this […]

[re: Star vs the Forces of Evil spoilers] I don't think the fandom would've liked it either way, cartoon endings that resolve the thematic conflict of the series by kind of unraveling the fiction are rarely popular in the fandom cus like, they _liked_ the fiction and would prolly preder […]

[Star vs the Forces of Evil spoilers] I do think the very ending of Star vs the Forces of evil with the chaotic blending of the mundane and magical worlds is really good. Thematically, it's absolutely perfect and everything the series had built up towards... plotwise it's a huge fucking mess […]

This does gesture at a limitation of the whole idea of generations, like if you live in a place that didn't get widespread internet until much later, you're not gonna fit that well in with the western idea of a millenial stereotype, there's probably some other historical or cultural event that […]

The problem with generations is people are apparently unaware that time moves forwards at a rate of roughly one second per second (slower on monday mornings) and they keep using it as shorthand for a particular age cohort and every five years or so they have to readjust all their stereotypes cus […]

I use the literature clock feature in Tabliss to display a book quote that contains the current time and like, this quote does contain a reference to 22:00, but that's not the "ten" being highlighted.
"I could not doubt that this was the BLACK SPOT; and taking it up, I found written on the other side, in a very good, clear hand, this short message: 'You have till ten tonight.'"
—Treasure Island, Robert Louis Stevenson

The "ten" in "written" is in bold.

It's kind of funny cus like, that is 100% an accurate description of the comic, it's not misrepresenting it or doing a "describe X badly" sort of gag, but it still took me by surprise seeing the comic described that way.

Video games make me believe in curses cus some people seem to have a knack for encountering bizarre bugs. Board games give me irrefutable statistical evidence that curses are real cus some people should not be rolling as badly as they do.

I swear, some people have some sort of curse on them, I've played 60 hours of Dressmaker, most of it pre-patch even, and did not encounter any major bugs, my girlfriend plays it for a couple of hours and manages to create the ghostly apparition of a sleeve that disappeared mysteriously.

[Dressmaker spoilers] My favorite gag in dressmaker is Prudence's occasional tendency of wording things in ways that sound perfectly fine in old timey speak, but that has a very specific subtext by modern standards. Like, she uses both "queer" as in "odd" and "gay" as in "happy" at various points.

I think a big part of my frustration is that tech people have no sense for material science at all. Like "oh just 3D-print a replacement for the broken part, its so easy and convenient" and then I do that and then it breaks immediately because the plastic is not strong enough to hold up to any […]

If there's one perfect example of how whitewashed not just metal but rock music in general has been, it's how it's the blues part of this equation that seem to take people by surprise rather than the classical part, when blues is the most direct influence. Wondering if a genre of 1960s rock […]

Perhaps unsurprisingly, magic shops sell stickers for card decks so you can re-seal a deck and make it look new (for use in card tricks and for no other reason, obviously) and the ones that amuse me the most are the ones that are slightly wrong and just says "genuine playing cards" on them. It […]

The game is a little too narrow in scope to work as a general "dress your OC"-simulator, you basically need to have an OC that dresses like a turn-of-the-century (the previous one) socialite, but if there's any Aristasians left, they'd have a field day with this game.

I think what people are reacting to, apart from the usual "oh fanfiction isn't written by _respectable_ authors, it's written by _those_ people" (queer people, women, neurodivergent & disabled people), isn't any inherent merit of books vs fic, it's curation. Books are a lot more well-curated […]

It's also extra funny when people make a distinction between Fanfiction and Real Books when a not insignificant amount of activity among Real Book publishers for the last decade or so has involved taking whatever fanfic is popular, filing off the serial numbers and then publishing it.

The idea that fanfiction is easier to write than original fiction cus you can rely on audience familiarity with many basic characters and concepts is an opinion you can only hold if you haven't actually read that much fanfiction. Nor that much literary fiction either.
