🦉🪶 Four #birds for today's #BirdOfTheDay theme #Paridae Carolina Chickadee Great Tit Tufted Titmouse Black-capped Chickadee
My local chickadee is the Carolina Chickadee, which occurs generally in the southern US from the East Coast to eastern Texas. The bird is perched with its back to us and has its head turned to the left. It has a black bill, forehead, crown and neck, a black bib, and white cheeks. Its back is a soft medium gray. We cannot see its white tum and slightly rusty sides.

North Carolina, US, 2022A Great Tit is perched on a somewhat thick diagonal reddish branch, its back to us. The bird has a black bill, forehead, and crown and white cheeks. It is usually described as having olive upperparts, but this bird is grayish above, with soft pale yellow underparts.

Copenhagen, Denmark, 2026A Tufted Titmouse is perched on a slender branch and is facing the camera. This is my local Titmouse; it occurs in the eastern US. It has a white front and gray upper body with rust-colored flanks.

Tufted Titmouse
Maryland, US, 2024Very similar to the Carolina Chickadee, the Black-capped Chickadee occurs mostly in Northern North America, though like a lot of species, it takes a deep southern dive along the Appalachian Mountains. Honestly, they look just like Carolina Chickadees to me, and apparently, even to other chickadees, as it may hybridize with the Carolina Chickadee where their ranges overlap.

🦉🪶 "Today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme is #AngryBirds, any bird with an angry face." Oh my... where to begin?!? I get the death ray of disapproval from birds so often that narrowing them down will take some work. But for now, here's a Northern Mockingbird trying to smite me with his glare.
May 20, 2020, a time of many thoughts and worries. This Northern Mockingbird definitely disapproves, but, my little feathered friend, I LIVE IN THIS HOUSE! So yes, I *am* staying home!!

But maybe you wanted peanuts instead of corn and other seeds... a thousand apologies.

🦉🪶 Four birds, some grubs-n-stuff, one big meal, and a few tiny grass seeds for today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme #Mouthful. American Robin Grey Heron x2 Abyssinian Crimsonwing
A portrait photo of an American Robin with a beakful of caterpillars, grubs, and insects.

Michigan, 2022A Grey Heron holds a ridiculously large catfish by one fin in its bill.

Loitokitok, Kenya, 2025The same Grey Heron, now swallowing the ridiculously large catfish; the fish is longer than the bird's bill, so takes up the whole thing and then some. Honestly, I was surprised the heron didn't choke on it.

Loitokitok, Kenya, 2025An Abyssinian Crimsonwing, a small estrildid finch, perches on a nearly vertical branch; it faces the camera and its head is turned to the left of the photo. It is holding onto a small thin blade of vegetation that has seeds on it. What we see of the bird is shades of olive, lighter on its throat and chest. It has a dark orange eye ring and a shiny dark beak. If one looks closely at the bird's right side, one can see just a bit of the crimson wing for which it's named.

🦉🪶 Some #birds for today's #Iridescence and #Black&White #BirdOfTheDay themes Wood Duck Wood Duck Black-necked Stilt Pied Avocets
A female Wood Duck stands on a thick wooden slanting pylon that is mostly submerged in still water. A beauty, the duck's body faces the right of the photo; her head is turned over her right shoulder, so she is looking at the camera with her left eye. Yes, a vogue shot. The sunlight highlights the iridescence of her wing and back feathers, and the whole bird is reflected almost perfectly in the still water.

College Park, MD; 2022A male Wood Duck in all his breeding glory swims to the right; he is keeping one eye on the camera. Sunlight shows the olive green, orange-tipped, and brownish burgundy iridescence of his rump, the shiny blues and browns of his back, and the shimmering green of his head. His reflection in the blue water is interrupted with many small ripples.

Santee, CA, 2026A very cute Black-necked Stilt walks to the left of the photo through shallow water. The bird overall is black on top and white beneath, with its face divided almost perfectly in half, white from the long narrow pointed beak to just beneath the eyes and black up and over the crown. The blue water is barely disturbed by his slow walking, and the bird's reflection is scarcely distorted from his movement.

Gilbert, AZ, 2026A colony of Pied Avocets at some distance stands in shallow water. The birds are mostly white with black trimmings; their foreheads and necks are black, as are their upturned bills and primaries. The birds are reflected in the water, which appears blue-gray. The colony is spread left to right across the middle of the photo, water and vegetation stubble above and below the line of avocets and their reflections.

🦉🪶 Four birds, one an #AwesomeOwls and all of them birds with #BirdNameG for today's #BirdOfTheDay Great Horned Owl Great Crested Grebe Gila Woodpecker Green-winged Teal
A Great Horned Owl is perched on a thick snag. We see his toes and talons (yikes!), his brown and white very stripey chest and tum, and one yellow eye, as the bird's head is turned. Ears up and the lovely mottling of one closed wing... yes, this is definitely an awesome owl!

Arizona, 2023A Great Crested Grebe is swimming in blue water toward us, generating a grebe-sized wake. The bird's black crest is up and sunlit. We can see the bird's white cheeks, brown chin, light neck, and some of its dark back.

South Africa, 2023A Gila Woodpecker clings to a worn wooden post; we have an excellent view of the bird's left side. The bird has a black bill and eyes, and is overall a light tan color. He has a red patch on his crown, and black and white wings. His stiff tail is against the post.

Arizona, 2022All ducks are lovely, and this Green-winged Teal is no exception! The bird is facing mostly away from us; we see most of his right side and back, and the sun lights the beautiful teal of his wide iridescent eyestripe, which continues to the back of his head, and speculum. His bill is black, the non-teal parts of his head are russet, and the bird overall is very light brown with various black, teal, or darker brown markings.

🦉🪶 A little #BirdInABush for today's #BirdoftheDay theme Red-billed Quelea
A Red-billed Quelea grasps a leafy bush; it is looking down at a 45° angle, mostly at other Queleas not shown in this photo. Red-billed Quelea are small birds, sparrow-like in their LBJ-ness, and do indeed have red bills. They can often be IDed by their behavior: loads of little birds suddenly appearing, and then almost disappearing into a bush, or perching on fencing. Nothing flocks like these little birbs!

🦉🪶 Four birds #FlyingHigh for today’s #BirdOfTheDay ALT theme African Fish-Eagle Rock Kestrel Osprey Black Kite
An African Fish-Eagle flies back and away to the left of the viewer. Similar to and related to the Bald Eagle, African Fish-Eagles also have white heads and tails. The chest of the African Fish-Eagle is also white. The rest of its body is brown. It is the national bird of Namibia, Malawi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Kenya, 2025A Rock Kestrel flies away from and to the right of the viewer. This medium-sized kestrel, a falcon, has a grey head, a rufous-brown body with spots, and dark eyes.

South Africa, 2024An Osprey flies away from the viewer, its wings forming an inverted U. The black and white bird has its striped tail fanned out; the tail is sunlit from above.

South Carolina, 2022A Black Kite flies to the left of the image in profile. Its outer flight feathers are black; the rest of the bird is mostly darkish brown without any rufous tones. It has a black beak, and the cere and gape are yellow.

A young Verreaux's Eagle-Owl is perched on a large branch; it appears to be dozing. In the background but nearby and not in focus is one of its parents keeping a watchful eye on its youngster.

I would have better photos of this pair had I not accidentally deleted 382 photos I'd taken the day before that included these birds. 🦉🪶 Four #birds for today's #BirdOfTheDay theme of #Warblers Ovenbird Prothonotary Warbler Gray-crowned Yellowthroat Victorin's Warbler
An Ovenbird calls while perched on a short branch

Peaks of Otter, VA, 2026A Prothonotary Warbler perched on a thin branch, facing and looking at the camera. The bird is a bright lemon yellow overall except for its wings, which are gray; its black beak and eyes contrast nicely with the yellow.

Magee Marsh, OH, 2022A Gray-crowned Yellowthroat is perched on a bare branch. His head is cocked and he's looking at the camera as though to ask, "What? Again?!") The bird does indeed have a gray crown; also a black mask from his light beak to his dark eye. Overall, the upperparts are greenish-yellow and its underparts are bright lemon yellow. He is definitely as cute as he thinks he is.

Belize, 2025A Victorin's Warbler is perched in the center of a bright green evergreen; he is singing. We see its gray beak, forehead, crown, and cheeks, its bright light orange eye, and its light russet neck, chest, and tum.

🦉🪶 Four #birds for today's #BirdOfTheDay theme of #AtOneWithNature, no manmade objects. Ruby-throated Hummingbird Tawny Eagle Great White Pelican Common Tody-Flycatcher
A sunlit Ruby-throated Hummingbird is perched on a thorny horizontal bramble. We see the bird's right side; her right eye appears to be looking directly into the camera. Her upperparts are a shiny green, underparts are white, and the wings are dark, as are her eyes and bill. She's perfected situated between two thorns.

Skyland, Shenandoah National Park, 2026What a bird!! A very handsome Tawny Eagle is standing on a scrubby patch of grass. Nearby but out of view is a dead intact Zebra (poor thing); the bird seems to be puzzled about this find. The eagle is indeed tawny, a lighter shade on the bird's head and neck, and increasingly darker shades of tawny the further back and down on his body. The exception are his fuzzy legs, which are the same light tawny color as his head.

Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania, 2019A Great White Pelican in flight, flying left to right, wings up, feet back, with a lake behind him. Yellow bill, pinkish white on the head and neck and white on the rest of its body except for the primaries and secondaries, which are black.

Naivasha, Kenya, 2023A Common Tody-Flycatcher is perched on a branch; the bird is facing to the left of the photo, so we see him completely in profile. A tiny ("tody") bird, it has a black bill and is black on its forehead and around the yellow eyes, and a dark slate gray on his nape and back. His underparts are a soft lemon yellow, and his long thin tail is dark.

A Brown-headed Kingfisher is perched on a dead branch; he's showing us his left side. The bird has a red beak, brownish-grayish crown, black eyestripe, and white collar. His chest is a light soft gray fading to off-white, his wings are black with bright blue primaries, and he has a bright blue tail.A Pale Chanting-Goshawk perches above us on a utility pole crossbeam. The bird faces the right side of the photo, with his head looking to his right, so we see his face, with its dark eyes and black-tipped orange beak. We have a splendid view of his finely white-and-gray striped underparts; his upperparts are mostly gray with some fine barring, white edges, and solid gray as well. Zounds, what a bird! The Crowned Eagle is perched on a large, thick branch, oriented to the left of the photo, but with its head turned to look backwards. Its gray maxilla contrasts with the bird's white head, neck, and underparts. Its wings are brown and gray, with most of the feathers outlined in white. Gosh, partridges are pretty birds!! This one is well-named, with a red beak. The bird is mostly brown on top, with a white supercilium, thick black eyestripe that extends down the bird's head and neck to its chest, and patterned feathers between the white and black stripes that spread out just above the bird's shoulders. There are also beautifully patterned feathers on its side of buff, dark brown, and a lighter rufous brown.

🦉🪶 Four photos for today's #BirdOfTheDay themes #CHE (Cormorants, Herons and Egrets) and Alt #Memories (bird captures you have reason to remember). It's mostly memories... African Darters Martial Eagle Black Kite American Robin
A parental unit, perched on a strong branch with its wings up and head down, checks on its nest of fuzzy mostly white African Darters. The adult's dramatic pose above the chicks, and the jumble of chicks in the nest (at least six), what with some with beaks open, wings and bodies and butts every which way... what a sight from the small boat I was in on Lake Baringo!Another dramatic pose, though it does not convey our amusement at watching this Martial Eagle trying to find purchase on these branches at the top of a tree! It took him a bit to find stability on that treetop. This Black Kite was the first bird I photographed in sub-Saharan Africa. It was my first safari, I was thrilled to *bits* to finally take this long-awaited trip (I'd been thinking about it since high school), and had purchased a camera just for this trip. I arrived in Nairobi a day early, ran into a couple on the same trip who had also come in a day early, and the three of us got a guide to show us some of Nairobi. This bird was perched outside the National Museum of Kenya. I also photographed a Pied Wagtail and Maribou Storks on our little jaunt into the city. This American Robin was on the lawn when I walked outside one December day with a camera I'd just purchased for my first safari. Not a great photo, but one I was so glad to take! I'm not a photographer (nor do I play one on TV), but I do like to take photos of what I see, particularly wildlife. I experimented a lot with the camera on that first safari, felt like crying when, many many thousands of photos and a lot of trips later, the shuttle wore out, and rumors that I kissed the camera when it was back in my hands after being repaired are definitely true! I now carry a back-up camera, an upgraded version of the camera I use; other people have taken more photos with my back-up camera than I have, as I have lent it to others -- drivers, guides, fellow tourists -- because why not?
And there is still plenty I don't know, so I'm still experimenting with the camera, and someday, I hope to really learn how to use it.

🦉🪶 Sooo, the #BirdOfTheDay theme is: #EyeOfTheWild – piercing eye or eyes as the dominant feature of the portrait, is it? I have one of those handy-by... 🤣🤣🤣
Sorry not sorry...

🦉🪶 #Birds sporting #Yellow somewhere who are also #SittingDownOnTheJob for both themes of today's #BirdOfTheDay Canada Goose Long-tailed Silky-Flycatcher Greater Blue-eared Starling Yellow-billed Duck
Four Canada Goose goslings, soft yellow and adorable, plopped every which way on spring-green grass. One of the peeps rests its head on its back but had one eye on the camera. A Long-tailed Silky-Flycatcher is definitely sitting on the job, as she is on her nest incubating her eggs. The nest is in a Y of lichen-covered tree branches. The bird shows mostly grayish-greenish feathers and a bright yellow eye-ring around its dark eye. A Greater Blue-eared Starling has plopped down on the top of a round wooden pylon. He is a dark iridescent blue with a black eye mask around his bright yellow eye. The bird looks rather grumpy; this is probably not the best time to remind him that his taxes are overdue. Two Yellow-billed Ducks rest in unkempt grass. We see mostly the back of the bird in the background; the Duck in the foreground has its head turned, allowing us a good view of his yellow bill. His iridescent white-bordered green speculum is fully visible. An Ibis has photobombed the Ducks.

🦉🪶 Five (or six?) #birds for #BirdoftheDay's alt theme #Paridae. Black-capped Chickadees in conversation Tufted Titmouse viewed through the patio door Willow Tit dismayed to realize he put on the wrong shoes Great Tit wondering whether he should feel honored or insulted by the "tribute"
Two adorable Black-capped Chickadees are perched on different small branches very close together. The bird on the left appears to be listening to the bird on the right, which has its beak open. A Tufted Titmouse is perched on a broken blue ceramic dish with snow in it; the dish is on a table, and there are a few seeds scattered about. The background is all snow. The bird appears soft in the morning sunlight, likely because the photo was taken through a window.A Willow Tit stands on a lichen-covered branch looking down at his foot, as though to perhaps wonder why he put on these shoes instead of the ones he meant to wear.A Great Tit is perched on a balcony railing. Left of the bird is a decorative hanging consisting of a single cord with a few perch-like tubes, a couple of medium-sized beads, and what looks like one unpainted ceramic tit-like bird interspersed along the cord. A few snowflakes streak through the image.

🦉🪶 #Triplets for today's #BirdOfTheDay Willets Eastern Kingbirds Eurasian Crag-Martins Eurasian Griffons
Three Willets feed along the shore; all three are facing to the left and are in strong morning light. They are gray above with a white rump, and white below with a distinct white area above the lores and a narrow whitish eye ring giving the bird a spectacled appearance. An Eastern Kingbird is perched at the top of a broken snag, looking directly at the camera. Its nest with two nearly-grown chicks is tucked into the top of the snag; the two young birds are looking up expectantly at their parental unit. These birds have grey-black upperparts and white underparts; their wings are long and pointed, and their black tails have a white terminal band.Three Eurasian Crag-Martins perch atop a sand-colored carved-rock shield affixed to a sand-colored building, with two on the ends of the shield and one at its center. These swallows have ash-brown upperparts and paler underparts. The tail is short and square, with white patches near the tips of all but the central and outermost pairs of feathers.Three Eurasian Griffons rest in the sunshine at the top of a stony outcropping. Two of them are standing; one has plopped down on its rocky perch as though to survey the land below it. They are handsome, regal birds. The sky behind them is clear blue. These vultures have whitish heads, broad wings and short tail feathers. They sport a white neck ruff and yellow bill, and the light brown body and wing coverts contrast with the dark flight feathers.

🦉🪶 #ScreenFiller #BirdofTheDay Great Horned Owl
The obvious choice for me...

This image courtesy of my then 9-year-old son, to whom I'd handed a small digital video recorder one day when we were out. This is a frame from the many little videos he took to amuse himself.

He's now a lot older, living in the UK, and occasionally sends me photos of birds for me to ID.

🦉🪶 Four #bird #AmongTheRipples, whether on purpose or not, for #BirdOfTheDay Common Merganser Common Goldeneye Tricolored Heron Black Vulture
A Common Merganser floats in rippling water that is reflecting a building that shares a color palette with the bird: gray, brown, and rust. The bird is not alone; he has a friend nearby.... --->... and here's the friend, a Common Goldeneye in the same rippling water, but here, there is much more of the gray-and-rusty-colored building reflected in the water. The black and white bird is a nice contrast to the building's colors.A Tricolored Heron hunts in the shallows of the fresh-water surf, the water sparkling in the sunlight. Not a pretty pic, but shows behavior I had not seen before nor since. This Black Vulture was shoved off the dock behind him by other Black Vultures and had to swim to shore using his large wings to awkwardly propel himself to land. The other birds had been harassing him and continued their harassment after this bird had made it to the lake shore, dried off a bit, and flew into a nearby tree.
