Sacred Harp folks are Good People, and there’s nothing quite like singing some fire and brimstone in harmony with 180 others in a Victorian ballroom. This weekend’s UK Convention was quite a thing, and I’m delighted to have been there, and proud to have played a tiny part in making it happen.

If His Majesty’s Government don’t go after these ‘activists’ with the same enthusiasm, nay, *glee*, that they pursued priests and grannies for [checks notes] holding up some pieces of paper, then it’s either because they’re frit, or they are complicit.

Children are 3x more likely to be killed in a collision with an SUV than a normal-sized car. Why the hell are we still allowing them as everyday cars?

Stop considering it. Just ban them. Do it now. Disposable barbecues are (a) useless as BBQs, take ages, food often still raw in middle, (b) environmentally horrible, (c) incredibly good at starting massive fires. There is no good argument for them. Bin them off www.theguardian.com/society/2026...

Downing Street's press release for Burnham's "emergency" Cobra meeting on the drought didn't even mention climate, with the Prime Minister blaming the growing numbers of wildfires on disposable barbecues. He's since appeared on GB News this afternoon to talk about migrant camps

I have a library card, which lets me borrow books and also let myself in secretly to the library after it’s shut. My local library’s blueprints sank on the RMS Titanic, and I learned today our library service is twinned with the one in Melbourne, Australia. Libraries are incredible!
A display board in my local library reading “Manchester to Melbourne”, depicting scenes from both cities of buildings and parks. In the foreground is a selection of adults’ and children’s books by Australian and Aboriginal writers

Only managed one legit ‘lock-in’ in my life, but it was as an impoverished student in Brighton with Brian Behan (brother of the more famous Brendan) standing me pints of Guinness all evening because I worked in the public library and he was one of our regular borrowers, so it’s a story I retell.

Rosie and Lola, a pair of tabby cats with white patches at their throats, sit on a windowsill facing into the room. Trimmed green hedges and red-brick semi-detached houses are visible outside the window. Their poses mirror each other, looking like a pair of book-ends - the effect is only slightly impaired by Lola being significantly more chonky than her sister.

My relationship to organised religion is definitely *complicated* these days, but singing Sacred Harp in a Salford boozer was the perfect start to the Easter weekend (even if singing ‘hallelujah’ on Maundy Thursday was a bit jarring to the former church chorister in me)
A Sacred Harp hymnal (stencilled with ‘Manchester’ in big green letters) lies open on a pub table. A half-empty pint glass, a bottle of whiskey and a pair of altos are visible, though out of focus, in the background
