I was aromantic due to trauma before I played this game. I came out of it with stronger romantic feelings in my heart than I ever had before. Doukyuusei healed me.

This 1992 (rewritten in 1999) Tokimeki Memorial-inspiring dating sim remake is still brilliant in 33 years later. It explores so many feelings and relationship challenges and worries and insecurities with a careful hand and somehow still comes out feeling like it won every battle it could have dropped the ball on. Except one, but oh my god does Doukyuusei 2 shows they knew how to make that right. Hopefully English-speakers will get to play that one in the near future!

I love the addition of an "easy" mode but don't be fooled; you should manually explore the map and you should try not to rely on skipping to events as it can cause other flags to be skipped and make the game more difficult or impossible to get some heroines. I promise the game is winnable on a first playthrough on "Classic" too for those who want a more challenging simulation game to play! Doukyuusei gives you many resources with which to keep track of your progress without an event diary and even has some sly, cheat-like mechanics to help get one through the game successfully.

I think the one small weakness of the gameplay is the reliance on completing meetups in specific locations over and over to "clear" the area for more important events, so later, busier days in the calendar can sometimes devolve into checking every meeting area to clear it of characters. The sequel fixes this by prioritizing flags over other events, but you'll have to bear with it here.

Review continues:
There is a character that feels like she was added late into development and another which hasn't aged particularly well but other than that, it's a gigantic cast of wonderful women I loved spending time with, worrying about (both emotionally and within the context of gameplay), and learning their stories. I'm so glad they kept the blinking from the early releases too, I know that's on its way out even for remakes but it adds a lot of personality to the game that you won't (currently) get from the remake of 2.

Doukyuusei is an incredibly fun dating sim that will probably either make you feel the tension of a relationship, or heal your wounds. I still can't stop thinking about it a year and a half after finishing it!"

-3mura's animations lately have been great, including in adaptations by salmina on iwara.tv

-Although they left the scene, you can't go wrong with anything Ngon made as they have such a good feel for movement and facial expressions

-I like some of Winktwin/Wの人's more heavily produced stuff they drop every few months

-For more Western tastes, I miss General Butch a lot as their animations always had a very high quality and high sexuality feel to them

-I tend to prefer originality in motions (as in user-made motion animations) rather than adapations with different models/backgrounds and lately that's much harder to find on iwara and other sites.

-March Shadow's work has gotten a lot better recently and i've been appreciating a lot of their videos

I was put in the mood to do some eroge reviews for recent stuff i've played -Ochiru Hitozuma (Black Lilith, 2011/2016) -Encode Encore (GoldenPot, 2022?) -Super Real Mahjong Venus Returns (ILLUMINATION, 2026)

Ochiru Hitozuma - great porn if you're into milfs, NTR, close calls with public sex, corruption, sexual slavery, and shotadom stuff. Unfortunately, it's too heavy-handed on the masc worship stuff and that gets annoying by the end. Main, repeated H-scenes are noticeably more enjoyably written and rambunctious than the side scenes. Basically docked this one a full point for the worship angle stuff, 7/10

Encode Encore - fun little RPGMaker NTR sim with a gyaru at your school. Lots of customizability and variation, but it does wear thin by the far end of the game. There are two or three real choke points where you have to push yourself to complete goals and in those the pacing feels too slow but otherwise very good for a small game and has a few cute secrets and things. The gameplay loop is pretty easy to glean out of just messing around with everything No voice acting fwiw. 7/10

Oh and of course the new Super Real - great adherence to the Super Real formula with the classic brutal AI. Beautiful scene direction for a 3D game and the game never really feels off unless you're just not used to 3D hentai and what can or can't be done currently. I loved the little models of things, the model flipbooks are readable in-game, and there are a lot of unlocks to do via skill or prize money. Could have used a Vs. mode, could use anything "more" of what they have really, but not bad for the price to be fair. 8/10

Sucks about Ochiru Hitozuma, i really only got tired of it very late. I was talking to [redacted] and it's like a 7.4 even with the point docked. It is really good smut outside of that permeating stench of machismo so it's just unfortunate it ends up where it is.

Even if it was an 8.4, it wouldn't be as good as Sisters or Yu-No fwiw
