Slipping through her bedroom door as quietly as she could, Uzi made her way down the hall to a side room that had once been nothing more than an oversized storage closet, now transformed into a workshop befitting an engineer such as herself. Surrounded on all sides by shelves of parts and unfinished projects, desks, and saws and large clunky machines, Uzi always felt at peace in here. This was her sanctuary; one of the few corners of the Doorman Residence that had always felt like home to her.
Only recently had she opened its doors to the other residents of this dwelling; upon the return of her mother, whom now spent almost as much time in here as Uzi. Countless times Uzi had found the squishy, little core curled up asleep between gears and gizmos, or within the gaping cavity in the chest cavity of a half built body laying on the middle table.
Maybe it felt natural to her, Uzi had thought. Maybe she sought out familiarity; anything that reminded her of the makeshift quarters she had scrapped together in the cathedral, where she had lived for so long. Still, Uzi tried to make her more comfortable, stringing together a small, scrappy hammock that dangled next to the main computer at the far side of the workshop. She wasn’t sure why Nori didn’t just sleep with Khan… Maybe it was just awkward after so many years apart - or maybe she just needed time to get used to her surroundings again.
Regardless, it was nice to see her settling into a space Uzi frequented. It was a comfort to have her mother around now, not to mention helpful when Nori’s technical and coding skills far exceeded her own.
She was in there today, though not asleep this time, furiously tinkering with wires and fuses and oil lines deep within the shell’s growing tangle of innards.
“Need an extra pair of hands?”
Nori jumped at her daughter’s voice, removing a headset that Uzi could now hear clearly was blasting music at a volume that would deafen most drones.

“A bit of everything… but mostly the critical connection points that will allow me to link up with the body safely,” Nori mumbled. “I’ll be honest, kid, it’s one thing to build a new body for someone, it’s a whole other can of bolts to make something that wont instantly explode the second a core with an advanced Solver infection gets shoved inside it. I don’t know if this is even going to be possible.”
“Yeah but like… you were patched, right? That should make things a little easier.”
Nori hummed, bobbing back and forth as though weighing up Uzi’s words. “Yeah... maybe. But it’s still completely new territory.” With a artful twirl, a screwdriver spun its way across the room and into Nori’s morbid workspace. Her eyestalks actively avoided Uzi as she turned to focus on bolting down a circuit board. “And if something goes drastically wrong I just- … I don’t want to go disappearing on you again.”
Uzi’s fingers curled and uncurled against the desk. She’d spent a whole lifetime without her mother – and yet the idea of losing her again so soon… She bristled anxiously, and reached out, her hand hovering close to Nori’s claw, before redirecting them to instead curl around one of the metallic ribs she sat between.
“You wont,” Uzi said with as much conviction as she could muster. “Because we’re not stupid enough to make any dumb little mistakes. Like hell, mom. We’re probably the greatest engineers alive on this planet, and we’re gonna make you the best frickin’ body ever. Better than any loser human could even hope to come up with.”
Nori scoffed but there was a fondness there as she rolled her eye up at her. She reached up and poked Uzi in the middle of her visor. “Alright, alright. Don’t get too big headed,” she chuckled. “But yeah… you’re probably right.”
It seemed to have worked; it felt as though Nori’s spirits were raised a touch as she continued her task, and she welcomed Uzi’s input as they worked in perfect tandem together.
