It cannot be made clearer. If you continue to support the Harry Potter franchise in any way, you are directly funding the removal of trans people's human rights in the UK.

Writers should internalize Lao Tzu's lesson about how the emptiness at the center of a wheel is what makes it useful, and how a pot is valuable because of where the clay *isn't*. Corporate geek culture has warped us into thinking that negative spaces are flaws that need to be fixed.

darkly funny how guys in this club - unfailingly confident in their genius and bravery, in the face of cowardly caution - get taken out by like, screwing in bolts. arstechnica.com/science/2025...

quote from linked article:

Rush simply had little patience for safety; he fired those who tried to delay his project based on safety concerns, and if an idea was fast and easy, he was often willing to try it. Rush at one point told crew to use only four bolts to attach the Titan's 3,500-pound dome to the sub when it was above water, despite the fact that it was made to use 18. He did this because "it took less time." His director of engineering told him that this was a concern but was ignored. In 2021, when the Titan was being hoisted onto the deck of a ship, these bolts all sheared off, and the huge dome crashed down onto the sub's ocean launch platform.

depends on the game, but if you're practicing composition, lighting, focal lengths, framing - all the same fundamentals as traditional photography - then the fact that the subject exists in a game world doesn’t make it less valid as art. if anything it adds new layers for expression and creativity.

there’s plenty of disagreement on bluesky, just with less death threats and racist dogpiling. twitter isn't the model to copy. every social media site doesn’t need to be right wing debate club. it can be a place to talk about interests and hobbies like normal people.

"we don't want anybody thinking about politics when they come to watch les mis"

article screenshot of a quote from richard grennell, trump's replacement director of the kennedy center, addressing the touring cast of Les Miserables refusing to perform for trump:

Richard Grenell, the president of the institution, said he was not aware of the boycott and that any performer “who isn’t professional enough to perform for patrons of all backgrounds, regardless of political affiliation, won’t be welcomed”.

He added: “In fact, we think it would be important to out those vapid and intolerant artists to ensure producers know who they shouldn’t hire — and that the public knows which shows have political litmus tests to sit in the audience. The Kennedy Center wants to be a place where people of all political stripes sit next to each other and never ask who someone voted for but instead enjoys a performance together.”

bluesky's DNS verification is already a solid, decentralized solution to prove your identity. it's clean, effective, and doesn’t rely on arbitrary status symbols. bluechecks just import the same petty elitist baggage that made twitter (in part) a real shithole.

we've been reading this same stupid article for 10 years now. real americans from rural towns get endless empathy and coddling no matter how toxic their politics, while urban voters need to toughen up, cut back, and stop whining. an exhausting double-standard that is neither useful or insightful.

it’s unsettling how little resistance there is to the scale of new surveillance tech being put in place. every movement you make in a car - to a union hall, a meetup of associates, a series of ob-gyn visits - is starting to get catalogued everywhere, tied directly to *you.*

there's nothing more "cold blooded" than middle-men insurers using AI and algorithms to determine who suffers and dies so they can extract the most wealth from our illness. if they’re unbothered by their violence, why should we be?

A notable aspect of private health insurance is the absence of any reason for it to exist. It does not contain costs, expand coverage, or expedite care – it makes those all worse. Its sole function is to profit as a rent-seeking middleman between patients and providers.
