sometimes it's a combination of phrasing, technique, approach, exclusivity and such. other times basic respect and sincerity. given i primarily worked purely in text (an already difficult and under-appreciated medium) some of the common indicators for tone take time to build. makes it hard to tell.

tbh I've developed a bunch of red flag detections for the various sorts of charlatan or predatory abuser types out there and on one end is how much creative enthusiasm they have for the act itself vs the results (skipping the fun part!!!) and the latter is more subtle spreads of traits together.

that's not to say hypno adjacent roleplay is bad. not at all, it's just its own thing that has only a certain extent of overlap, in that it can be fun to incorporate rp elements into hypno scenes. pure rp (where both know its just mutual sexting or creative writing) is separate and respectable.

The better folk, both subjects and tists, often band together or avoid most public spaces due to a combination of dickheads and spiral postin' roleplay goons that treat any public space dedicated to recreational hypnosis as a roleplay forum or lazy hookup to pull desperate folk in.

most online "tists" you'll encounter are absolutely in the lower end of the graph, ranging from "rp tist trying to pretend they're really doing it without having learned shit" to "novice to okay tist who is purely in it to solicit nude pictures, wank material, or worse". the gems require effort.

Maybe I'll get back into the scene at some stage but it is made harder by such. the sort that go in lovebombing, affection, praise, only to pivot once you're on the hook to isolation and the violation of boundaries and consent are rare but they leave scars.

Without those foundations it is nothing but a cheap veneer of linoleum over lost plays, and even with them it requires such deep trust that must be earned and may be revoked easily. There's a little D/s involved, oh certainly, but controlling in and of itself, while certainly one of the appeals, is not the pure joy. that lies in the journey there. the learning, the back and forth witticism, the discussion of technique and application like a puzzlebox mutually unravelled.

And it's a two way street. you gotta genuinely enjoy and love doing that sorta thing to really thrive. A knack for pacing, words and novelty. whimsy, humour, compassion. The ability to chat about the technical aspects of inductive techniques. and mutual respect for limits, needs, etc.
