For #HorrorWritersChat: I'm JR Fryer; I write modern cosmic horror and primarily listen to Gothic rock and Industrial, 'cause I'm too damned cheery 🫥

Cannot wait... it's rare I preorder, but already did back in June XD Already have chills. If you haven't played the Yomawari series, fix that! Creepy, unforgiving, and heart wrenching. (The 2nd jump-scared me so bad with a fourth-wall break, I nearly snapped a controller and screamed myself raw).

I love editing and writing on a deadline. What I don't love is the chronic zombie nightmares I get while working on a deadline. Seriously, brain, knock that crap off!

Spent last evening seeing the #YourName 10th anniversary showing with a friend. Not only was it gobsmackingly gorgeous on the big screen, I think I had as much fun listening to their laughs, gasps, and crying for the last half hour. I’ll have to revisit the stairs when I return to Tokyo in the fall.

After 54 sessions (2½ RL years), No Gods to Protect Us ended late night. So surreal to say goodbye to these #FabulaUltima characters. Darius. Igraine. Jar'Von. Mellio. Morrow. Sharing tea and goodbyes at the first inn they'd slept in, as life returned to the world they saved from the War of Heaven.

I pray for another season of #SHIBOYUGI: Playing Death Games to Put Food on the Table. It's like an anime studio hired David Lynch to direct Squid Games. It is surreal and savage. Gorgeous and gruesome. Probably too sedate for many, but I relished its cruel beauty and moral ugliness.

"I want to read books, but I don't want all those words and interpretation stuff to get in the way. Oh, and half the time, it gets shit wrong... " is one hell of a take. We're not headed toward Fahrenheit 451, we're already too lazy to read the damned books ourselves! www.axios.com/2026/08/11/r...

Listening to this today. And it finally clicked where I picked up my writing and GM-speaking styles some 40+ years later, as well as learned the Law of Three. "Suddenly the top began moving, rotating, unscrewing..." Heard that line daily for years. How I didn't wear this album out, I'll never know.

Night after my final #ApocalypseKeys session and pining for my character already… Pheme was easily one of the vilest, cruelest, most vain PCs I’ve played. And, gods help me, I loved her 😅 (Seriously never expected licking fear and despair off subway walls would be the least of a PC’s villainies).

Starless Junction was a happy accident, while I writing Soddenmore for #HeartsofRavensdale. Seemed the perfect location for Shozauka Baba and her jellied eels… the rest grew from there. Had even more fun expanding it for my scenario, A Fox in the Dale.

Played some community DnD at the library last night, as my 1st level death cleric. Kind of fun playing with strangers, laying rest to a minotaur skeleton, and dealing with weird fae. Loved how another player and I instinctually shared the same ridiculous Eastern Bloc accent for our drow 🧝‍♀️

Salthill in #HeartsofRavensdale changed a bit from its original concept, but so glad the Kneeling Knights remained. Helped add to the Dale's creepy and unsettling essence. If/when I run the campaign for my group, I'll probably start here (and bring back some the things cut from the original text).

As a lifetime GM, my respect for #MattMercer went through the roof for this. I've met so many GMs who'd have said "No, you can't" or "That's not in the rules." He gave Ironmouse her chance and the dice gods spoke. Embrace the chaos. Every time.

JR Fryer, writer for #KULT:DivinityLost and #LegendInTheMist. I typically write liminal and surreal horror, as well as folk horror recently. One of my favorite antagonists is Mr. Dark from Something Wicked This Way Comes, mainly ‘cause Bradbury got me into the genre as a kid #horrorwriterschat

Not seen #TheLongWalk yet? Promptly unf%&k that shit. It is still living rent-free in my head days later. Easily one of the best #StephenKing adaptations because it strips out the Hollywood BS and just focuses on his strength - characters. Hoffman and Jonsson are miracles. Simple. Brutal. See it.

After ten years, Episode 5 for THE LONG DARK dropped, finally revealing the fates of Astrid and MacKenzie. Buggy, little illogical, but overly an enjoyable (if bleak) ending to a decade's long story. Definitely intrigued by the upcoming sequel. In the meantime, going to play some more Survival mode.

Gone for half a century next week, but still close to my heart. Still remember oh'ing and aw'ing over his PBS MYSTERY! opening and cackling at the hilarious deaths of 26 children. Taught me the meaning of macabre and ennui, and how the weird and grotesque were delightful fun. An inspiration, always.

Dude, my worries for #BoneTemple were put to rest. Hot damn that was glorious, bloody fun. And - if I might say - infinitely better the 28 Years Later.
