this only they're doing it to themselves

DID HE OR DIDN’T HE?….This story may or may not be true, but legend has it that during one of Lyndon Johnson’s congressional campaigns he decided to spread a rumor that his opponent was a pig-fucker. LBJ’s campaign manager said, “Lyndon, you know he doesn’t do that!” Johnson replied, “I know. I just want to make him deny it.”

some might say this allegory is a little on the nose coming out of 2026 Japan, but the only way I could like Tonelico more is if she turns out to be a lesbian. (If this turns into a cross-species romcom I swear I'm gonna) Also, whatever, I really liked at least half the original Planet of the Apes.

Page with a handwritten message saying "My name is Hitoshi Kanashima. I come from Earth. I am what we would refer to as an astronaut on my planet." with a cartoonish depiction of a spacecraft flying away from Earth.

Superimposed over it is the caption, "However, it was of course nothing more than imitation…as it was only able to produce nonsensical letters."

catlike behavior detected

Tonelico, Press Secretary for the Beastkin administration of Kemo (that's a planet), loudly protests, "Put me down!! I was not asking to be lifted!!" while being held aloft by the first "hito" (human) to visit their world.

All you needed to do to sell me on this manga is give it this cover. I don't care what it's about. It's got a OL meganeko on the cover.

the cover of ヒトナー / hitoner vol. 1, from tomohiro yagi. A soberly dressed catwoman with her long dirty blonde hair gathered up in a loop, with golden eyes behind rimless glasses, wearing what looks like a Japanese trial lawyer's costume and penny loafers, stands pensively holding a folio. Her tail, which is the coveras her hair, sticks out behind her. The background is aggressively yellow.

One more new manga before I go pass out… @omitasi.bsky.social's レインアパート/ Rain Apartment is a lovely postapocalyptic fairy tale. A little bit of Girls' Last Tour, a little bit of The Color of the End, a little bit of The Girl from the Other Side, with a vibe all its own. www.harta.jp/articles/002...

The cover of the only (?) volume of Rain Apartment, showing a small girl in an oversized shift sitting next to a tall horned humanoid on a small island in a boundless wet expanse. A fantastical cityscape rises behind them, and in the foreground is indistinct foliage.

The same two people sit in an apartment, looking outside at the falling rain and talking about how it always rains, and how pleasant the rain is.

Everything about Delicatesse is wild: the story (a cannibal girl starts eyeing her beloved boyfriend when the price of meat starts to get unsustainably high), the characters, and especially the art. Gonna be watching this one with interest. heros-web.com/series/ba4d8...

The cover of Delicatesse volume 1. It features a flat red background on which there is a vignette of a black and white drawing of a woman's face. She is wearing cat-eye glasses and ball-shaped earrings. The only color in the panel is her bloody mouth, which also has filed teeth. She has an ambiguous expression on her face.

Another new series that I'm really enjoying is 「違うクラスの好きな人」(She's in Another Class) by @chihikwi.bsky.social. It's a simple school life romance, but you can see her experience as an illustrator shine through in the beautifully simple line art, and the main couple are good kids. Lovely.

The cover of 違うクラスの好きな人 / She's in Another Class volume 1, showing a girl standing next to a boy with bleached-blond hair. They are wearing matching school uniforms of teal jackets with gray skirt / pants.

The cover of 違うクラスの好きな人 / She's in Another Class volume 2, showing the same two kids standing on a rooftop. The girl is wearing a pale yellow wool coat, and the boy is wearing a matching-colored sweater under his school blazer. Both are wearing scarves.

My delight was considerable when I learned that there will be more than 2 volumes of this (the individual volumes are wideban-sized and like 3-400 pages. This is a chonky story of revenge and gangland violence).

The cover of Ryuko volume 1. A woman with long black hair and bangs wearing a leopard-print bodysuit and matching heels is standing astride a good-sized motorcycle.

The cover of Ryuko volume 2. The same woman is riding a motorcycle while looking at the sky over her left shoulder (that's unsafe!). she is wearing much less, so you can see the full-length dragon tattoo running down her leg. Quentin Tarantino must have lost his ever-loving mind the first time he saw this guy's stuff (yes, there are feet).

The splash pages for 龍子 RYUKO, a manga about what if a yakuza boss was a lady who is extremely bad ass and carries a gun while playing craps and smoking a cigar and having a tattoo of a dragon running all the way down her right leg.

Also the more I think about the more this Aka Akasaka end card for episode 2 just has layers. He's so good at the detail work! Why can't he end his stories for shit!!!!!!

A depiction of "Hanaori Meteor". A pink-haired girl with blue eyes, one of which has a starburst-shaped pupil. She is wearing a hair clip decorated with an image of a rabbit with tears streaming down its face. She is holding a microphone in one yellow-gloved hand and is wearing a Shuchi'in Academy girl's uniform. The captions say, "Hanaori Meteor! A beautiful popular girl with zaibatsu class wealth! She's also an active idol, and the woman who will kill you!"

obscured by the captions and slightly offscreen, a shaggy-haired head says, "TMI"

Off to the side, there is an info box labeled, "Trivia Corner": "Hikawa Hekiru is really nice, so I was able to do whatever I wanted for the end card."

Also, no matter how much Gunsmith Cats you think there was, there was more. And no matter how horny you think Kenichi Sonoda is, he's hornier. Some of those Cannon God Exaxxion covers are basically R-18.

A woman in a form-fitting flight / space suit extracts a bullet from the back of a girl's thigh the hard way.

a scientist wears black lingerie, a white lab coat, a gun in a hip holster, and some very white gloves. This is definitely not the illustrator's fetish.

the lines on this giant robot are obscene

This is THE thing to understand about shopping in Japanese bookstores, and it took me forever to get my head around, but now that I have, I get annoyed at bookstores that sort by author or any kind of categorization other than target demographic. Also, Maruzen-Junkudo rules. Best chain(s) in Japan.

translator's note from A Love Yet to Bloom:

"Takamine gets confused in this chapter because bookstores and libraries in Japan sort their books differently.

In short, libraries sort their books by subject matter, and (typically) bookstores sort their books by publisher and/or imprint.

Why? A lot of reaons, but books of the same imprint tend to be visually and thematically similar, and it makes restocking easier for the store.
