NASA forced the firing of fantastic JPL employee, Neela Rajendra today. And JPL hardly waited more than a few minutes to erase her from their records. This timeline fucking sucks.

Because of rising costs and uncertainty regarding some of my contracts, I was unable to finish my office this past winter. So it’s currently in this state. Two weeks ago it was below 20 ºF in my office in the morning. Today the temperature reached 94 ºF. This summer is going to be fun.
The bare bones of a small room. Several tools are on the floor and on blocks between 2x4 studs. There’s a pile of insulation in the far corner. Electrical wiring with various gang boxes are also visible.

I'm afraid your cost to get a new-to-you used vehicle is going back up after falling for most of the past two years. It's still low compared to the wildness of post-covid-shutdown, but it's going to start climbing again as these tariff-cum-taxes start hitting.

My friend and her partner insisted I use the hashtag, #EVHero for this. They called me about 30 minutes from home to ask if I would meet them partway because they'd skipped a charging session and run low on charge. I took the Lightning out to give them a quick bump of energy to get them home.

I haven't seen this out there yet. The NASA administration has created an ideas form for how to make NASA more efficient. I would say fire the administration. I reacted the url because I don't know if it's personalized and I don't want the source to be outed.
Introducing the Efficiency Ideas Submission Form

At NASA, we take pride in tackling tough challenges, finding smarter ways to work, and ensuring every resource is used to advance our mission. Agencywide, there are opportunities to streamline processes, reduce inefficiencies, and strengthen how we operate. No one knows those opportunities better than you.

To capture insights, we’re launching the Efficiency Ideas submission form – a place to share ideas on how we can improve the way we work. You can submit ideas anonymously or include your contact information if you’d like to be available for follow-up. We encourage you to be specific and succinct so we can identify the most actionable ideas.

To help inform our phase two submission for President Trump’s “Workforce Optimization Initiative,” we encourage submissions by Thursday, April 10. However, the tool will remain open beyond that date as we continue seeking ways to improve our operations.

Submit your efficiency ideas:

https://forms.office.com/g/[REDACTED]

NASA senior leadership will review submissions, prioritizing ideas based on feasibility, cost impact, and alignment with our mission. Some ideas may be assigned to directorates or program offices for further development. We’ll keep you updated on the ideas that move forward.

Your expertise and creativity drive NASA’s success, and I look forward to seeing the solutions you propose. Thank you for your commitment to making this agency stronger.

Embrace the Challenge,

Janet

Holy fuck. It's not just the sea of red, it's the magnitudes. Health insurance and consumer staples are up, of course, because investors know they can charge whatever they like and people have to pay. I'm afraid to look at my 401(k) value. Hope we can survive this with enough of it intact.

By Adam Keiper (@adamkeiper.com):
Wow. Just Wow. How Trump set the tariff rates. This is blithering, staggering, mind-boggling, jaw-cracking, gums-bleeding stupidity.

By @James Surowiecki (@JamesSurowiecki):
Just figured out where these fake tariffs rates come from. They didn't actually calculate tariff rates + non-tariff barriers, as they say they did. Instead, for every country, they just took our trade deficit with that country and divided it by the country's exports to us.

So we have $17.9 billion trade deficit with Indonesia. Its exports to us are $28 billion. $17.9/$28 = 64%, which Trump claims is the tariff rate Indonesia charges us. What extraordinary nonsense this is.

By @James Surowiecki (@JamesSurowiecki):
Replying to @JamesSurowiecki:
It's also important to understand that the tariff rates that foreign countries are supposedly charging us are just made-up numbers. South Korea, with which we have a trade agreement is not charging a 50% tariff on U.S. exports. Nor is the EU charging a 39% tariff.

[Illegible tables follow showing tariffs rates being applied by the Trump Administration.]

Whelp, isn't this fun? USAID's infiltrators cancelled everything good coming from the agency, so NASA's SERVIR program has been canceled.
ROSES-24 Amendment 118: SERVIR Applied Sciences Team Not Solicited

A.41 SERVIR Applied Sciences Team (AST) solicited proposals for membership on the SERVIR Applied Sciences Team and Team member projects until it was paused on February 19, 2025. Earlier this month USAID notified SERVIR partners that they have terminated all agreements and contracts with NASA and the SERVIR network. Without the partnership with USAID, NASA cannot continue the SERVIR program.

Thus, ROSES-2024 Amendment 118 announces that A.41 SERVIR AST is no longer solicited.

On or about March 31, 2025, this Amendment to the NASA Research Announcement "Research Opportunities in Space and Earth Sciences (ROSES) 2024" (NNH24ZDA001N) will be posted on the NASA research opportunity homepage at https://solicitation.nasaprs.com/ROSES2024

Questions concerning A.41 SERVIR AST may be directed to Nancy Searby at Nancy.D.Searby@nasa.gov and Ashutosh Limaye at Ashutosh.Limaye@nasa.gov.

Is it cost? Compare the total cost of ownership (TCO) of an EV & a similarly-capable (often otherwise identical) ICE car, the TCO is less for the EV after three to five years of ownership. In this set of simulations, 95% of the time the EV is cheaper. Especially if you can charge at home.
Plot of 20,000 Monte Carlo simulations of total cost of ownership incorporating reasonable variations in purchase price, gas costs, maintenance costs, miles driven, and several other variables. The cost of ownership of the electric vehicle is approximately equal to the cost of ownership of the ICE after about 3 years in this set of simulations. 95% of the simulations end with the TCO being less for the EV than for the ICE, regardless of the number of years owned.

I wasn't vaccinated (hippy antivax parents). I had measles and complications. It was horrible. My parents were also anti-hospital so I didn't even get basic care. I don't know how I survived--DO NOT USE ME AS YOUR FUCKING ANECDOTE. Get your fucking vaccine. pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC...
The persistence of specific IgG after measles infection and after measles vaccination has not been sufficiently investigated. Current evidence suggests that immunity after the disease is life-long, whereas the response after two doses of measles-containing vaccine declines within 10–15 years. This study evaluated the proportion of individuals with detectable anti-measles IgG in two groups, those vaccinated with two doses of anti-MMR vaccine and those with a self-reported history of measles infection. Among the 611 students and residents who were tested, 94 (15%) had no detectable protective anti-measles IgG. This proportion was higher among vaccinated individuals (20%; GMT = 92.2) than among those with a self-reported history of measles (6%; GMT = 213.3; p < .0001). After one or two MMR vaccine booster doses, the overall seroconversion rate was 92%. An important proportion of people immunized for measles did not have a protective IgG titer in the years after vaccination, but among those who had a natural infection the rate was three-fold lower. This finding should be considered in the pre-elimination phase, given the resurgence of measles cases among individuals who after being vaccinated lost their circulating IgG after several years, especially if they failed to receive a natural booster.

Well, this is a screwed up and, quite frankly, cowardly action by the Acting Director of NASA. The quoted EO does not direct NASA to dismantle its advisory committees. This is entirely a decision by the acting Director.
In response to Executive Order 14217, NASA’s acting administrator, Janet Petro, has directed NASA to merge these five committees into a single advisory committee with broad representation from across the NASA science community. This restructuring will provide the opportunity to retain one non-statutory science committee and ensure continued support of NASA science goals -- improving efficiency, while ensuring NASA maintains the important process of engaging with the science community.

NASA’s Science Mission Directorate is in the process of determining the best structure, scale, and scope for the merged committee. The directorate is committed to ensuring representation from all areas of expertise relevant to the Science Mission Directorate’s objectives.

NASA Update - March 10, 2025
As I alluded to last week, we are all navigating a complex and ever-changing landscape together, and I want to share what that means for our team in the near term.
As directed by [an] Executive Order, "Implementing the President's 'Department of Government Efficiency Workforce Optimization Initiative," all federal agencies, including NASA, have been instructed to submit an initial plan for reductions in force and reorganization. In compliance with this directive, we are actively working with the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) to develop a thoughtful approach that aligns with both administration priorities and our mission needs. While this will mean making difficult adjustments, we're viewing this as an opportunity to reshape our workforce, ensuring we are doing what is statutorily required of us, while also providing American citizens with an efficient and effective agency.
In coordination with OPM, and the U.S. Office of Management and Budget, we began implementing a phased reduction in force, or RIF, today. These actions are occurring in advance of the agency's RIF and reorganization plan as part of the broader governmentwide restructuring effort. We will close NASA's Office of Technology, Policy, and Strategy, the Office of the Chief Scientist, and the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility branch in the Office of Diversity and Equal Opportunity, along with reducing their workforce.

[Removed some text related to "we care about our workforce. Will post as further comments to this comment.]

I know this news is difficult and may affect us all differently. Change of this magnitude is never easy, but our strength comes from our shared commitment to our mission and each other. I remain grateful for your professionalism and resilience, and I encourage you to support one another as we move forward.

My 78-yr-old aunt just received this scam letter. She alerted me to it, saying, "this looks like a scam." She knows this is a scam because she drives a Chevy Bolt EUV, and it doesn't have what one would consider a transmission. There is no changing of gears. This is supposedly sent by a lawyer.
Our investigation shows your vehicle may be a lemon, and you may be entitled to a refund, or monetary compensation under California's Lemon Law if you have experienced any of the problems itemized below:

1. Transmission Issues: Hard shifts, shift delays, clunking in low gears, hesitation upon accelerating, Trouble downshifting or skipping gears.

2. Engine Issues: Misfires, shaking, grinding noises, ticking noises, check engine light turning on, loss of engine power, diminished acceleration; excessive oil consumption.

3. Brake issues: Increased brake pedal effort, vibration in pedal or steering wheel when braking.

4. Electrical Issues: Instrument panel gauges or lights. Power door locks or power windows issues. Black or blank infotainment screen. Bluetooth connectivity issues.

If you have experienced these or any other problems and have made warranty repair visits for one or more of these above-referenced issues/concerns, you may have a lemon vehicle, and we can help you get your money back.

Our clients have received up to $150,000 for their defective vehicles.

Perhaps the greatest human accomplishment of the past century was the remarkable increase in life expectancy. In a century the world changed markedly from having almost no countries with life expectancy more than 50 years to having many countries with a life expectancy of 80 years as life expectancy almost doubled in the long-lived part of the world. As an example, in the United States life expectancy at birth over the 110 years from 1900 to 2010 went from 47.3 to 78.7 (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention/National Center for Health Statistics [CDC/NCHS], 2012, 2013). At first, this increasing length of life resulted from declines in infectious disease and deaths concentrated among the young. After most deaths from infectious conditions were eliminated, cardiovascular conditions and cancer dominated the causes of death. These then became the targets of science and medicine in the second half of the last century.

A new attack on Civil Servants. OPM has released a 21-page memo on how the SES will be evaluated. It begins with a faulty premise that, "Less than one percent of senior executives are rated at the lowest rating level. This indicates that senior executive ratings are systematically inflated..."
Unfortunately, the current SES performance rating system is broken and falls far short of
these standards. Governmentwide SES performance appraisal data consistently show the vast
majority of ratings for senior executives are Level 4 or 5. Less than one percent of senior executives
are rated at the lowest rating level. This indicates that senior executive ratings are systematically
inflated, and poor performers are not being held accountable through a rigorous appraisal process.
The current SES performance appraisal system does not meaningfully differentiate excellent from
poor or mediocre performance across the SES. Nor does it provide for an accurate systematic

"Glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) have emerged as promising therapeutic agents with potent anti-inflammatory properties and diverse clinical implications..."
Abstract
Glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) have emerged as promising therapeutic agents with potent anti-inflammatory properties and diverse clinical implications. This in-depth review article explores the mechanisms behind the anti-inflammatory actions of GLP-1RAs and assesses their prospective applicability in a wide range of disease scenarios. The current review establishes the significance of comprehending the anti-inflammatory role of GLP-1RAs and identifies pertinent research gaps. A concise overview of inflammation and its clinical consequences underscores the critical need for effective anti-inflammatory interventions. Subsequently, the article elucidates the intricate mechanisms through which GLP-1RAs modulate immune cell signaling and regulate the nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) pathway. Detailed discussions encompass their impact on inflammatory responses, cytokine production, and attenuation of oxidative stress.

In conclusion, GLP-1RAs exhibit substantial anti-inflammatory effects, rendering them promising therapeutic agents with broad clinical implications. They are very useful in a wide variety of diseases because they regulate immunological responses, block NF-κB activation, and decrease production of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Ongoing research endeavors aim to optimize their therapeutic use, delineate patient-specific treatment paradigms, and explore novel therapeutic applications. GLP-1RAs represent a significant breakthrough in anti-inflammatory therapy, offering novel treatment options, and improved patient outcomes.

I wrote this on another platform. I'm on the board of my local emergency housing shelter and we need some very specific donations. "Little" things like this are just as important to protecting our democracy. Yes, we'd like our emergency shelter to become irrelevant, but it's not going to soon.
If you feel you can't do anything about all of everything, you can. You can start by donating to your local emergency shelter---and tell your friends about that donation.
You can help fix a neighbor's appliance. And let others know.
You can help clean up a dirty street. And encourage others to help.
We need to build a foundation of community service. We need to remind people that good is not found in chasing the billionaire mythology, it's found in being a civil servant.
Yes, we will need loud voices and probably, sadly, armed resistance. But we also need peacekeepers (not the military kind). We need community builders. We need to build that foundation of good.
So, if you don't feel like you can be that loud voice today, and you don't want to be that armed resistance, then maybe send your used pill bottles* to your local emergency shelter?
*Make sure you send them something they can actually use.

I got ahold of a copy of the letter to NASA employees in response to the dodgy demand for information from the infiltrator. This entire thing would be a complete farce if it weren't real and doing real harm to good people and good agencies.
You may have received a message from the Office of Personnel Management on Feb. 22, titled "What did you do last week," requesting details on your recent accomplishments. Employees may have already responded or may still choose to respond. You are not required to respond and there is no impact to your employment with the agency if you choose not to respond.

NASA is proud of our accomplishments and all we do to further the nation's exploration goals. To that end, NASA will send an agency response. Employees should continue to feel empowered to report their activities and accomplishments through normal agency supervisory and performance channels as part of NASA's regular course of business. We are relying on supervisors at all levels to ensure employees are fully engaged in advancing NASA's mission on behalf of the American people.

For any email correspondence, please be mindful of the level of information you share, including personally identifiable information, export-controlled, or other sensitive information.

One of the things that annoyed me about FB is the fake posts about science. There's an edited--very poorly edited--image of Saturn purported to be from JWST floating around bluesky. Here's the real thing. webbtelescope.org/contents/med...

Support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic...
Civil Servant Oath of Office as a response to Musk's stupid email demanding a description of what employees did last week.

Supported and defended the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic;
Bore true faith and allegiance to the same;
Took this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion;
Well and faithfully discharged the duties of the office;

So help me God.”

I'm in Altadena w/ family who was lucky and still has a house. The H2O has been contaminated w/benzene & other toxic VOCs since the fire. These are difficult to clean out of H2O systems & impossible to safely remove via boiling b/c it is toxic as a gas. So happy they're trying to destroy the EPA.

Related. Here is a step-by-step for civil servants to get their personnel files. If the system is even open anymore...
1. Login to eOPF from your government computer.
1. A) You have to be on their network to get the file.
1. B) get logged in ASAP so that you don't have to go through the pain of a password rest.
2. Click "My eOPF" tab on the sidebar.
3. Click "My eOPF Print Folder" tab at the top.
4. Check "Select All"
5. Click on of the two print buttons.
6. Click "My eOPF Print Status" tab at the top
7. Wait.
7a. Wait for the print request to process. This can take a long time. 30 minutes or more. Click "Refresh" occassionally.
7b. While waiting, read the instructions describing what the document password will be and write the password down.
8. When the print request appears, click "View" in the "Action" box.
9. Save as PDF
10. Open the PDF in your PDF reader and enter your password.
11. You can print a paper copy of the file or email/transfer it to your personal computer, or both. Just be sure you have a copy stored somewhere off of your government computer.

Did you see how fraudulent the "NASA" "Interim Directive" is? Not just its blatantly illegal offer to obligate Congress to spend funds, but even its cartoonishly bad fake letterhead? Look at that NASA logo. It was copied from a Windows 95 bmp somewhere and pasted onto their shitty-ass word doc.

I’ll end this thread with the last slide at this meeting, which included this vision I shared at that meeting. I had cribbed this from Dr. Cheryl Morris of the USGS.
A scientist in Egypt studying Earth and Mars soil
geochemistry uploads her data to an open-source, open access
worldwide scientific computing and collaboration platform that
includes thousands of USGS, NASA, ESA, African Space Union,
UAE SA, JAXA, and other research databases.
She and her collaborators in Iran, USA, and Iceland
seamlessly visualize and compare her data to Terrestrial,
Martian, and Titan paleoclimate, rock geochemistry, dust
composition, geomicrobiology, past and present surface- and
ground-fluid chemistry, current satellite imagery, elevation,
slope and other relevant data sets.

I had a conversation with a colleague today who may choose to self-identify. We were talking about all the horrible attacks happening, and we boosted each other’s mood with the fact that in 2017, we contributed 80 workforce abstracts to a meeting that did not expect it. We made good trouble.🧵

You post this while simultaneously deleting your page on ethical leadership? Compliance in advance has never protected people or organizations. You need to stand up to the fascists. I will not renew my AGU membership until leadership behave ethically and stand up for all of their members.
AGU page saying, “Sorry, we don’t have this down to a science. You discovered a page that doesn’t exist” for their ethical leadership page.

I’m not going learn to play guitar, but as I was responding to a friend’s post about ridiculous “coping strategies” to maintain mental health, I thought of Woody Guthrie and “This Machine []ills Fascists.” Practicing skills improves resiliency. We’re going to need it. Some skills []ill fascists.
