I let my characters talk to me. I've had to learn how to outline/organize my story beats, but how my characters react to these situations sometimes surprise me. Example: I once had a character in another (sadly abandoned) novel who informed me she was bi halfway thru draft 1. 😅 #WeeknightWriters

From WIP1: This is a big scene that helps put things into perspective for MC, Liam Brookside.

"So, what are we going to work on today?" Liam asked with a hint of excitement. This was the first time in their years together that he would get to work on his own with his trainer.

"We aren't working on anything today. You, on the other hand, are going to work on something very important," Bianca walked from the kitchen with a small plate of berry muffins and set it on the table gently. The muffins were fluffy and sweet, almost melting in Liam's hands as he reached out to grab one.

"Oh? What's that?" Liam asked, already stuffing one of the baked goods into his mouth.

"Comparison." Bianca leaned back in her chair and sipped her herbal tea. This single word caused all excitement to disappear from Liam's face, replaced by confusion. Frankly, he had already done quite enough comparing himself to Codie. He really wasn't sure why he needed to work on it even more, but Bianca continued regardless.

"You know Codie lives down by the canal, right? That he's been basically on his own since he was a little boy?" Bianca set her teacup down and tore slowly at one muffin, delicately placing each chunk in her mouth between questions.

"Yes, I know that. I didn't know you were aware of that, though." Liam wanted to reach for another muffin, but could feel the pressure on him to resist.

"Of course I did. Codie has been infamous in Hozar for years. He's always running around looking for work to help support his mother. The poor woman has been depressed for years. She barely gets up to eat or bathe, from what I understand." Bianca could see the sadness move across her protégé's face. "I'm not telling you this to make you sad. I'm telling you this so that you'll always remember: you have more than he does. The reason he's ahead of you is that he's dedicated himself to adventuring. He lives in the city, so he's able to come in at least twice as often as you, and has dedicated himself to his goal because he feels he has nothing else." Liam continued to pause as he reflected on Bianca's words.

"You, however, have both of your parents. You have a home and a bed to go back to each night. Your next meal is never in question. Please remember, you are not Codie, and he is not you. You are both living separate, incomparable lives that have converged at a single point. It's up to you if you want to get nitpicky about who is better at what, but in my eyes, you're the one who is better off. Chew on that for a while." With that, she left Liam alone to think. A moment later, she was surprised when she felt a small tug at her apron.

Suikoden Ep 1: I had a hard time keeping up with this one. The story was fairly straight forward, but the characters didn't really grab me. The fact that this was a double length premiere didn't help matters either. If my meta wants to watch this, I might watch with him, but otherwise I'm good.

I only remember two stories from this book. It was the one about the couple who found a chihuahua while on vacation in Mexico. They smuggle it back home only to find out later that it's not a chihuahua, but a rabid street rat. Also, the story about the girl who has a spider lay an eggsac on her.
