I want to thank my colleagues on the council for unanimously passing a resolution tonight opposing IL26-638 and IL20-001. Hate and discrimination has no place in Washington state.

We're ⚡️LIVE⚡️at the Shoreline City Council meeting tonight, where the council will discuss an ordinance opposing IL26-638 and IL26-001. The two measures, scheduled for the November ballot, are all but explicitly designed to target transgender kids in Washington public schools.

Hey folks, we're back at Shoreline City Council! This week, they'll be discussing placing a measure on the Nov. 2026 ballot to set up a metropolitan park district to build and operate a regional swimming pool. Shoreline last asked voters to fund building a pool in 2019. That measure failed.

Hey folks, we're here at tonight's meeting of the Shoreline City Council. Tonight's agenda: discussion of amendments to the 2025-'26 final biennial budget, and discussion of the 2025 Shoreline Police Service Report. Shoreline has budgeted $36.5M toward police, about 24.33% of the total budget.

One last thing: wanted to clarify that all three of Roberts's changes went through. Robertson's change struck the language of "working with community members and organizations," and that the city will still work on signage about being a welcoming community. bsky.app/profile/ospr...

Robertson insists, on data privacy concerns, that the cameras may only collect data when triggered by speeders. Also, she notes that data retained by the vendor may still be subpoenaed by an outside agency.

Robertson recalling the demand from residents to have speed cameras installed in the area. Also saying that she is interested in an "ability to pay" model.

staff, in response to a question from Robertson about changing the road environment, with regard to capital improvements on 175th: construction in 2027 along 175th would be an artificial, temporary way of slowing speeds

The Osprey @ospreynews.net · 24/02/2026
The tone from the dais suggests that the council is uninterested in the camera program.

The Osprey @ospreynews.net · 24/02/2026
Roberts stating that he has "mixed feelings" on speed cameras. Says that the biggest difference comes from changing the conditions of the road — and that 175th Street "almost encourages" faster rates of speed. The area in question has a BIG downhill slope going toward Meridian Park Elementary.

Pobee has asked if citation penalties can be incremental, based on the speed of the violation. Staff has already suggested a two-tier system — $130 at minimum for up to 14 MPH over the limit, and $260 for violations at 15 MPH or more.

The Osprey @ospreynews.net · 24/02/2026
Ademasu asking a big question that feels especially relevant tonight: Can the city add language to a vendor contract ensuring that data shall not be shared with outside agencies? Staff said yes — and that they can also add penalties for a vendor violating such a clause.

The last big ticket item tonight: discussion of an ordinance that would allow speed camera enforcement in school zones! No final decisions are coming tonight; the action (final approval/rejection vote) is planned for March 30.

The council has moved on to adopt a resolution approving an updated public art policy — and that one slid through pretty quickly and unanimously after a short discussion.
110
The Osprey @ospreynews.net · 24/02/2026
Resolution 560 has passed, with two of Roberts's three changes. Robertson moved to strike language to work with community members and organizations to develop and distribute signage affirming Shoreline's status as a "welcoming and safe community for all."
100
The Osprey @ospreynews.net · 24/02/2026
One more thing: Robertson noted that the city was invited to @jayapal.house.gov's office to discuss immigration enforcement issues. (More on that once I get a chance to go back and check the tape.)
100
The Osprey @ospreynews.net · 24/02/2026
There's support to Roberts's amendments, though Robertson is expressing concern on the bullet point about working with community members to create signage.

The Osprey @ospreynews.net · 24/02/2026
Mayor Robertson is asking staff to pursue meetings with impacted community members directly. "That is something that may not happen publicly...but speaking directly to our impacted neighbors."

One woman, sharing her experience as a Black immigrant, told the council that fear "doesn't stay in one household...it trickles through." "Immigrants are not strangers," she said. "This resolution does something simple but powerful. It reaffirms that Shoreline values dignity, due process and trust."

The Osprey @ospreynews.net · 24/02/2026
Other speakers, like Rick McClurg, pledged to stand with the city council when "the time comes" to stand against federal immigration. Norbert Steele, as he did previously, told the council that "I need you to stand up. I need you to be leaders."

Plenty of impassioned comments tonight. Just now, one speaker called back to America's history of institutional bigotry. "It is not lost on me that people who look like me were, at one time, interned," she said, calling back to the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II.

The Osprey @ospreynews.net · 24/02/2026
Roberts's amendments effectively strengthen the language within the reso, while also directing staff to work with the community to "develop and distribute signage" and to develop rules addressing conduct of city employees as related to civil immigration activity.

First thing after public comment, action on Resolution 560, regarding federal immigration actions in the city. Notably, Councilmember @electroberts.bsky.social has proposed a handful of amendments to the reso.

We've been following this for a little while now. Folks within the city began organizing after ICE and CBP began their surge in Minnesota. Concern jumped up after the killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, and the immigration detention of a man who was taking his two-year-old to daycare.

There's a lot of discussion about chain link fences as exterior materials. A new amendment would ban untreated chain link fencing in commercial zones "unless screened from public view."

Rolling through a few public comments that have been submitted to the city: one is very upset about the idea of public funding for housing, as well as references to "anti-racism" and "past harms." "Equality is the law of the land. Equity is a racist structure that implies reparations." Oh, bud.

Huh. So while I was writing up public comment, the council ran through the first item — discussing comprehensive plan amendments — pretty quickly. No comments from the public, and just a bit of discussion from Councilmember Ramsdell, who lives in an area that would be affected by density changes.

She's upset because the first request went in a year ago, and went nowhere. A follow-up request by school staff was sent out this year, and — according to the comment — the city said it needed to do an "extended study on how it would affect all middle schools."

The Osprey @ospreynews.net · 11/11/2025
Two, Maris Appleson, is concerned about traffic around the middle schools. She's among a group of residents worried about drivers barreling through dark crosswalks as kids walk to school. Requests from community and the school district to have flashing stop signs and school zone signs have stalled.
