Our #seaice team has developed a Sea Ice Index, online since several years, at osisaf-hl.met.no/v2p2-sea-ice.... It offers visuals of the trends and evolution of sea ice at hemispheric, global and regional scales. It includes the sea-ice extent and area since 1978, and is continuously updated.

Sea-Ice extent daily data visualised on a year-long graphic. Each year since 1979 are displayed in a different color. On the left side, the graph for the Arctic display the regular decrease of ice coverage in the northern hemisphere. On the right one, one can see the trend is not that clear, but the last few years are dramatically low.

On the opposite pole, even if the situation is not record-breaking, the Sea Ice Extent remain very low, currently within the 3 lowest daily values. To the notable exception of the Ross Sea, every area of the continent are concerned.

This situation is mainly due to a spectacular drop in Northern Hemisphere Sea Ice at the end of January. Arctic Sea Ice Extent is at record low for several weeks now. The map show that almost all part of the Arctic are concerned by the low extent.
