They say it's Silent Movie Day in the US of A. TodayI learned the redoubtable S. Lubin trademarked a version of his "clear as a" Bell logo in 1909-10. Two tweaks at the former rival Edison Manufacturing Company: Officially "Lubin Manufacturing Company," maker of "Kinetoscopic Films."

Speaking of Lumière: Le Squelette Joyeux (1897). for the AM&B double-printing DAVEY JONES’ LOCKER (1900) sources say it’s likely Biograph used the Lumière skeleton. 1) Doesn’t look so to me. (You?) 2) in 1900, AM&B used 68mm negatives in its lab. Could they combine 35&68? Quite a trick!

Always a brief pleasure to weigh in with the brothers at semester’s beginning. Their filmography is more diverse and creative than the cliché of actualité. Colors, animation, tricks, historical reenactment, fantasia.

Of all the photos of Fred Ott (left), this is by far the most curious. Undated, but pre-Sneeze. A good reminder he and brother John helped 'perfect' the Edison phonograph before they mucked with the Kinetograph. No clue about Mike (right) or the Two Dutch Mikes reference. @mikemashon.bsky.social

Unidentified photo from the National Photo Company. Where ? When? The Metrotone truck makes it 1929-30s. Catalog caption = “Photographing fire for news reels.” Actually we see smoke—no fire. It’s a newsreel crew, but perhaps they’re shooting for the stock library, not an actual news event?

When a fire started inside the Capitol Jan 3, 1930, DC fire fighters extinguished it quickly. Newsreel units wanted better footage. They made more smoke, lit flares and got the fireman to run through the action again. For the new synch sound film, they obliged with sirens and lines of dialog.

For a century, no agreement on what Lev Kuleshov did with which films when, to generate much ado about editing. But by 1930, Rotha's THE FILM TILL NOW: "His famous experiment with the actor Mosjukhin and the plate of soup, the coffin, and the little girl is probably too well-known to be repeated."

In his 1929 book, Hans Richter published images he created to illustrate the Kuleshov effect. Not replicating images used in the K experiment. Just approximation of the concept. Used films from his own collection. The man : a photo of artist Werner Grāff, with whom he worked.

The Amateur Cinema League's MOVIE MAKERS magazine, Sep. 1929, lists its first piece as "Nocturne" by Serge [sic] Eisenstein, page 566. This is the entirety of that page. I appreciate collisions of the amateur and the avant garde. And the faith ACL had in its readers.
