Okay, so Jaime West (D), running for city council in Fayette, IN, clearly heavily pregamed before this interview. Not gonna lie tho, there’s something there. “Fire all republicans” because you “just can’t stand ‘em”? Party on, Jaime West. (And watch til her final comment at the end. Woot)

We haven’t had an episode for a few weeks, and this new episode helps explain why. With our old friends George and Traci, we talk about aging parents, caregiving and preparing for end of life—and I share a little about the journey we’ve been on with my dad. theycallusbruce.libsyn.com/they-call-us...
They call us preparing for the inevitable

COYOTE VS ACME manages to make Coyote an incredibly sympathetic protagonist, turns a cartoon caricature of Peter Lorre into a romantic hero and casts Lana Condor to play Will Forte’s niece without explanation needed, so it’d be a win even if it weren’t hilarious

Right—this is still a niche phone. A sizable and probably very profitable niche but the phone world is large and contains multitudes.

Most of the carrier pay-forward plans basically end up being interest free loans (sometimes with a subsidy) that end with you owning the phone over time. Once you’ve paid out the cost you can ask them to unlock it and they will.

In the larger basket of things we pay too much for with too little rationale/resulting value, smartphones increasingly lean more toward the “utility” end of the spectrum versus the “luxury” end. But of course the Duo is a luxury, dammit.

Yeah I hear you. But I guess my take on it is that it makes an increasingly vital and powerful (and yeah, sometimes addictive and toxic) piece of technology available to a much broader group of people than otherwise.

The fact that the most maxed-out mainstream phone (iPhone Duo 2TB at $3199 retail no subsidy) will sit at about 3X the *average* price of a phone means smartphones actually have a flatter mid-to-top pricing curve than most goods, to be honest.

Consumer tech (and cars) are the last qualified indulgence of the middle class. We can definitely talk about how both impact consumer credit in scary ways, but it feels unfair to be using a $2000 phone as THE exemplar of luxury overreach when folks out there gleefully drop six digits on watches.

And I know this is an apologia for tech because I am, admittedly, a gadget addict, but the return on investment for a productive tool is so much greater than the pure luxury goods that still fly off shelves and that truly exemplify the Gilded Age. Like, I write/research on my phone now sans laptop!

The reality is that most people “buying” this phone will be doing so thru a heavily subsidized/financed wireless subscription, amortized over two to three years. Buying a phone is now much more like buying a car than say, jewelry. It’s not quite like walking out of Prada with a $5K Galleria bag.

Yes, $2000 is expensive as hell, but there have been iPhones at that price point the last two years. The Duo *starts* at $1999, but it has all new tech, two batteries, two screens (one being 2x the size of most prior iPhones) and an extra camera. And it’s about the same price as its Samsung peer.

At the end of the day it isn’t an iPhone til it’s an iPhone. Apple doesn’t invent stuff, so much as refine it to the point of being what you didn’t know you wanted until you try it.
