A colleague just told me how the Merlin app has become a bit of a craze at his daughter's secondary school in Barnsley. Apparently they're using like Pokeman Go to compete for the biggest species list. Can't be a bad thing if it creates a few new birders. @rspb.bsky.social

I was 30ft from a singing Quail yesterday, with Merlin running. It never picked it up, but did pick up a Redshank that definitely wasn't there. I'm starting to think it might be a scam 😉
