Something I’ve been trying to encourage people to do in the visual strategy trainings I lead with my co-conspirator Ange Tran is remind people that you could just take out a marker and write on a piece of paper like we do for protest signs.

#Signal 3/3
PROTECT PRIVACY/IDENTITY Don’t use your full legal name as your Signal profile name, use first name, initials, or nickname. Set phone-number visibility to Nobody: Signal Settings → Privacy → Phone Number → Who can see my phone number → Nobody. Create a username to share instead of your phone #: Settings → your profile name → Username (username is separate from profile name). Go to your phone Settings → Apps → Signal → set contacts access to None. Consider enabling Always Relay Calls: Signal → Settings → Privacy → Advanced → Always Relay Calls (routes Signal calls through Signal’s service, which can better protect IP address). Disable automatic link previews: Go to Signal → profile picture → Settings → Chats → turn off Generate Link Previews.
STAY ALERT Look out for phishing, impersonation, & account-takeover attempts. Never share your Signal PIN, SMS verification code, registration-lock information, recovery key, or password with anyone. There should be at least two admins on every group chat, in case something happens to one. Turn on Registration Lock & protect your Signal PIN. The PIN helps recover profile, settings, contacts, & block-list information after losing or switching devices; it is not a backup of message history.
If you suspect a person or device has been compromised, remove them from sensitive groups, re-verify trusted contacts, & move sensitive communication to a newly verified channel. Signal will not initiate contact through in-app messages, phone calls, SMS, or social media, & will not ask you to provide a PIN, code, key, or payment info through a chat or call.

#Signal 2/3
Your phone may be retaining Signal messages even after they should have "disappeared." Turn off notification previews: Signal Settings / Preferences → Notifications → Show & choose No Name or Content or No Name or Message. If you want to clear the notification log iOS has already stored, the only way to do that is to factory reset your phone & restore it as a new device—not from a backup. Android’s documentation says that doing this deletes the existing history & stops new notifications from being logged. If you must use Signal on a computer, delete data regularly: Open Signal on computer → Signal Preferences → Settings → Privacy → DELETE ALL DATA to delete all your stored & active conversations. You will need to re-link your phone to your laptop to continue using Signal on your hard drive. When you re-link your phone to your Signal on your desktop it will ask you if you want to transfer messages—do not do so. When you use Signal on your computer, it retains all messages even after they have "disappeared."
PROTECT YOUR DEVICE Use a short screen-lock timeout & a strong phone passcode of at least six digits. Do not use Face ID or fingerprint unlock. Require a password or screen lock to open Signal on your phone. Hide Signal’s contents in the app switcher: Signal Settings → Privacy → Hide Screen in App Switcher on iOS, or Screen Security on Android.
On Android, enable Signal Settings → Privacy → Incognito Keyboard. Go to Settings → Chats → toggle off both Share Contacts & Use Contact Photos. In your phone’s app permissions, deny Signal access to contacts if you do not need contact syncing: Phone Settings → Apps → Signal → Permissions → Contacts → Don’t allow. Disable AI notifications summaries just for Signal. iOS: Settings app → Notifications → Summarize Notifications → toggle off Signal. Android: Settings → Notifications → Notification summaries → Manage apps (under Don't include these apps) → toggle off Signal.

Many activists & organizers use the Signal app instead of regular SMS texting for increased privacy 🧵 Swipe for practical steps to: • limit records • lock your device • protect your identity • verify contacts • avoid scams Save & share with people who use #Signal! #DigiSec #SecurityCulture #OpSec
REMEMBER Signal is safer, not safe scroll for safety tips
COMMUNICATE SAFELY Signal is not permission to say anything. Keep communications in large or not-fully-vetted Signal chats to a bare minimum. Don’t write anything you wouldn’t want authorities to read, or to be read aloud in court. If someone’s phone is taken or accessed, your messages to them may be visible. Anything can be screenshotted! Whether readable for one day or one minute, it can still be screenshotted.
VERIFY PEOPLE & DEVICES Double-check that you are talking to the person you think you are through a trusted second channel, such as an in-person conversation, video call, or a question only the two of you know the answer to. Use Signal’s safety-number verification. Compare the safety numbers or scan the QR code in person when possible; if they do not match, stop using that channel until you can verify the person. Remove people from chats if they—or any of their devices—become compromised, lost, seized, or accessed by someone else.
MANAGE DATA Set disappearing messages for every chat you create or join to 1 week, 1 day, or shorter. Set a default disappearing-message timer for all new chats: Signal Settings → Privacy → Default timer for new chats. Delete Signal on your phone before traveling internationally. Delete Signal Desktop when you no longer need it, especially before giving away, sharing, repairing, or disposing of a computer. Be careful what you store in chat group descriptions—files, links, photos stored there are visible to everyone with a link to the chat.
