Had a fever dream that UT sent a $0.39 charge for an unreturned silicone wristband (livestrong but burnt orange) to collections after 20 years, instantly ballooning the payment to $350 + interest, and meanwhile law school fundraisers were trying to ply me with songs about my success as a student.

I have mixed opinions about Mayor Satya’s leadership dating back to how she coddled MPD’s response to BLM protests in 2020. But you do have to hand it to her here: the national conversation will gain literally nothing by drilling into the victims’ identities and lives. Let this community heal.

Not England related whatsoever, but memory activated: Back in 2011, I lived in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The mayor of San Juan was running for reelection and had opened a natural history museum (taxidermy and the like) that year. Here is the Christmas card city residents all got.

A postcard of a family (father, mother, two teenagers, and a school-aged child) posed in front of a taxidermied still life of a cheetah killing a gazelle with a bite to the neck with paper snowflakes dangling from above in front of a painted savanna backdrop.

The lower quarter of the card has a snowflake matting and the text reads “Que esta Navidad ilumine tu sueño,” or: ‘may this Christmas make your dreams shine.’ Signed Amanda, Odette, Jorge, Irma, and Jorge Andres Santini.

There is also a small emblem of the city crest.
