⚖️🇪🇺 BREAKING: The EU General Court has ruled on our challenge to the EU Taxonomy’s aviation and shipping criteria. The good news: the Court found part of the shipping criteria unlawful. But our core concern remains unresolved. 👇🧵 #ClimateSky #GreenSky #EUTaxonomy
We welcome the Court’s finding that part of the shipping Taxonomy criteria is unlawful, risking letting LNG-powered ships producing significant quantities of the super-pollutant methane be considered ‘green’ investments. This ruling is a crucial confirmation that the European Commission's discretion is not a blank cheque.

A narrative we’re likely to hear emerge from airlines, as the likelihood of a scope extension grows. The evidence suggests free allowances have contributed to profits and shareholder payouts rather than driving the lower ticket prices and sustainable investment the policy was intended to deliver.
How much do airlines actually pay for their climate damages?
110
Opportunity Green @opportunitygreen.org · 09/09/2026
And their operations were associated with an estimated €320bn in accumulated climate costs. The numbers raise a fundamental question: What were free allowances actually achieving? Our analysis challenges an old industry narrative that airlines need free allowances to remain competitive.

Yet they spent just €1bn on decarbonisation, including sustainable aviation fuel and ground-equipment electrification. At the same time, these six airline groups generated €21bn in profits.

✈️ €10.9bn in free carbon allowances went to European airlines between 2013 and 2025. How much did they spend on decarbonisation? Just €1bn. So where did the rest go? 🧵

✈️ After exempting international flights from the ETS for more than a decade, the European Commission released their long-awaited ETS proposal on Friday. So, does this exemption still stand? Partly...🧵👇 #ClimateSky #GreenSky #ETS
EU ETS proposal: a partial solution to a major climate challenge
Despite recognising that aviation could account for 90% of EU transport emissions by 2050, the European Commission has proposed only a partial solution.
The proposal:
✅ Expands the EU ETS to more international flights – a welcome step forward.
❌ Still excludes some of the world’s largest aviation markets, such as the US and China, while covering lower-traffic routes like North Africa.

By prioritising geopolitical considerations over climate impact and economic fairness, the Commission is falling short of the ambition needed.
📢 The Parliament and Council must strengthen the proposal and extend the ETS to all departing flights.

✈️🚢 Shipping and aviation get a free pass on climate – but the EU ETS revision could end that, and fund a just transition in the process. 🧵

✈️ Every transport sector pays for its pollution. Except one. Cars. Trains. Trucks. All are subject to fuel taxes, VAT and carbon pricing. Aviation? Still mostly exempt. 📲 Share this post if you think aviation should pay its fair share.
How does aviation's tax treatment compare to other sectors?

✈️€26 billion. That’s what the EU has lost because international flights aren't charged for their pollution. Now the EU must decide whether to close that gap. We break down what the ETS is, why international aviation has been left out and what's at stake. Watch our ETS 101 video below👇 #ClimateSky

We have seen signs of its influence across the private sector, the EU, and the International Maritime Organization (IMO). We are especially excited about Opportunity Green’s efforts to elevate climate-vulnerable countries in international policy discussions, as we think such efforts could improve the inclusivity and the ambition levels of these processes." – Giving Green

Climate vulnerable countries bear aviation’s worst impacts, yet often have the least say in ICAO’s decision-making. The Assembly must work harder to increase their representation and influence in shaping global aviation policy. Read our latest research: tinyurl.com/5y4vz2ar  🧵 4/4
"Now is the time to confront aviation’s free pass and show how a well-designed emissions price could not only cut emissions but also support the very countries most at risk from climate change. While industry argues this would harm tourism in vulnerable countries, our research shows the impacts are minimal and can be mitigated."

ICAO must strengthen its climate action: current measures like CORSIA rely on offsets, lack enforcement, and ignore non-CO₂, which makes up 2/3 of aviation’s climate impacts. The sector needs policies that drive real emissions reductions, rather than false solutions that delay change. 🧵 3/4
"At this Assembly, governments must make four key asks: a step change in ambition and pace of decarbonisation; a stronger voice for climate vulnerable countries in shaping aviation policy; recognition of the growing body of international legal obligations on climate action; and clear progress on pricing emissions from aviation to support resilience and transition in developing countries most affected by climate change."

✈️❗The #ICAO Assembly – which only takes place once every three years – starts this week. Aoife O’Leary, our CEO, will be there this week to observe whether ICAO (the International Civil Aviation Organization) finally takes responsibility for aviation’s climate impact. 🧵 1/4 #ClimateSky
"It’s crucial that ICAO agrees a pathway for the aviation sector to contribute revenues to climate action and resilience in the countries most affected by its pollution. We cannot afford another cycle of delay – ICAO must finally take responsibility and set aviation on a credible path to decarbonisation."
Aoife O’Leary
