H Street NE in Washington, DC is a special place - in part because of its history and its people. The H Street Land Use and Market Study not only examines the history of the corridor, but the current state of the corridor: publicinput.com/hstreetstudy
Colorful graphic featuring an image of a block of buildings along H Street NE. Text on the graphic reads: "How well do you know the history of H St NE? We’ve been working on a study of H Street - how land uses, store fronts, public spaces, and connectivity work today, and where changes could better support the people who live, work, and spend time along the corridor. To do that, we need to understand the history of this corridor and the people who live there."Colorful graphic depicting a timeline and two images - one of a black and white painting depicting Native American people around a fire, the other a black and white photo of the horse-drawn streetcar. Text on the image reads: "1600's: Pre-Colonization: The Nacotchtank Native American Tribe inhabited the Eastern Branch of the Potomac River. 1790: DC Resident Act: DC is established as the seat of the federal government. 1849: H Street is built: H St NE is constructed with early development (mostly residential). 1871: DC Streetcar: The streetcar connected the corridor to downtown and spurred new growth"
Colorful graphic depicting a timeline and three images (a historic map of the area, a black and white photo of a brightly lit shop on H St, a color photo of a bustling intersection along H St). Text on the image reads: "1908: Union Station and the displacement of Swampoodle: The construction of Union Station creates jobs for H Street but also demolishes roughly 300 houses in Swampoodle, a working-class neighborhood of descendants of enslaved persons and immigrants. 1900s-1930s: Commercial boom: H Street NE grew into one of DC’s most active commercial areas, with new grocery stores, banks, theaters, and department stores. 1940s-1950s: Desegregation efforts gained momentum, and many businesses and entertainment venues on H Street began lifting barriers to African Americans as restrictive covenants and segregation in public spaces were outlawed."
Colorful graphic depicting a timeline and two images (a black and white image of a building on fire, a collage in color of images of people at an event with a poster that says "Revival". Text on the image reads: "1968: MLK Jr Assassination: Much of the damage from civil unrest after MLK Jr’s assassination went unrepaired for decades. Reinvestment efforts focused on other areas of the District with less destruction – resulting in slower recovery for H Street NE. 1970s-1990s: Economic decline: The corridor experienced economic decline, marked by high vacancies and persistent poverty. A 1969 redevelopment plan prepared by federal agencies did not attract private investment. 2002: H Street Main Street founded. 2004: H Street NE Strategic Revival Plan is published."
