If Europe and other "middle powers" want to see what striving for digital sovereignty really means look no further than the frantic efforts of Zuck / Meta to put some device - any device - on the hands of "consumers". All the cloud and "AI" in the world will not help if a screen gatekeeper says no.

Organizing the world's information has been a latent requirement and possibility for decades, starting with Tim Berner-Lee's semantic web (1994). But the world's digital society stewards are fast asleep, so this vital task was outsourced to the adtech bros which have now mutated into the "AI" bros.

The only "software" that is an existential threat to humanity is the financial system itself. Malfunctioning conventions and behaviors, manifestly decoupled from reality, diverting attention and resources. Yet treated as eternal gospel, socializing the costs of each self-generated crisis.

Despite a growing demand for causal evidence about social media, independent researchers remain severely
constrained in their ability to conduct experiments directly on online platforms. To cope, multiple method-
ological workarounds have emerged—from controlled surveys and simulations to client-side overlays and
platform partnerships—each requiring distinct trade-offs between desirable experimental properties. The
recent emergence of open social media platforms offers a qualitatively different methodological opportunity.
Here we propose a design space of social media experimentation and discuss Open Platform Field Experiments
(OPFEs). OPFEs represent a distinct class of experimental approaches that enable independent researchers
to directly intervene on functional platform components—such as clients, recommendation systems, and
moderation services—within live social media environments. Through a comparative analysis of experimental
archetypes, we show that OPFEs occupy a previously unexplored region of the design space. We then bridge
theory and practice by characterizing the architectural and governance elements that enable OPFEs, mapping
them onto Bluesky and the AT Protocol, and illustrating the end-to-end lifecycle of a complete OPFE design.
Overall, this work establishes OPFEs as a practical methodol…

A common thread in these factors is their vicious feedback loops, one governance failure feeding into the next one, one hideous pattern enabling the next one, at an accelerated pace (pun). The result is a dystopic digital landscape that feels totally out of sync with most societal norms. 5/5

A third factor concerns the "demand" side. "AI" adoption by large numbers of people is real, and the utility to them is undeniable. But where does that utility derive from? It derives from existing knowledge management tools stagnating for decades - in the hands of the very same monopolies 4/

A second driver is the absence of any meaningful pushback to claims and marketing / manipulation ploys ("AGI" etc.) that have reached grotesque levels. The first driver is the financial system being chronically addicted to the abnormal financial returns accruing to digital monopolies. Anything digital that promises a renewal / perpetuation of the "winner takes all" model is a sure bet. "Investors" love sure bets. Ditto the captured regulators. 2/

The #PISA2025 survey results are out and they make for depressing reading: ongoing decline across the board. The historians of the future (assuming they exist) will identify the first decade of the 21st century as "peak civilization". Yet its all endogenous, a malfunctioning political economy.
Diagram from PISA 2025 results showing that the average trend across OECD countries is negative (Figure I.1.5). Performance in PISA 2025 was the lowest in all subjects, significantly below the mean performance observed in any earlier assessment (except PISA 2022, in science). In mathematics, performance remained close to the 2003 level through all assessments up to 2018, then dropped sharply between 2018 and 2025. In reading and science, the strongest performance was observed in 2012
and 2009, respectively, then the trajectory turned negative. See Chapter 2 for further details about PISA trends over time.
