Reducing complexity ➡️ reduced cost ➡️ reduced price. Optical counters are the heart of high-performing CPCs. By using the latest in manufacturing technology and some ingenuity to simplify and modernize our optical counter, resulting in a 10x reduction in associated manufacturing costs.
A graphic features a flatlay comparison photo of machine component parts of various shapes and sizes on a cool grey woodgrain tabletop, a black line divides the graphic in half vertically: on the left, the title "Traditional" sits above the photo and the following specs are displated below the photo: "9 machined components, 4 lenses, 48 total components"; on the right, the title reads "openCPC" and below the specs read "1 machined component, 0 lenses, 17 components"

🦇🎃🧛 'Tis the season... to discuss some of our favorite all-time makes. In the spirit of his OpenRespirator build, Wyatt (one of our ORCC creatives 👻) fills us in on a set of Halloween teeth he absolutely Had To Have and how he taught himself to design and produce his own in middle school.

This year, we’ve been working with a team of passionate, creative makers to put our open source respirator prototype manufacturing methods to the test. We’re so excited to be introducing you to a couple of them this week. In the meantime, here’s some background on what we’ve been up to: (1/4)
A black and white rasterized laptop and hand holding a pen are pictured. The pen is aimed at the screen of the laptop, which appears blue with a white graphic of a mask on it. The thumbnail of the hand is painted the same blue and squiggly action lines emanate from it. Down the center of the image, weaving in and out of those graphics, appear the words "follow along" in various shades of blue. Underneath, the url openaeros.com/openrespirator is visible. An openRespirator logo with the words "creative cohort" appear in the top right.

Glad to bring the "little CPC that could" to the Healthy Indoor Air event at the UN today. The conversation in clean air are moving in the right directions. Open source hardware will be part of the solutions and proud to show off the OpenCPC as part of tools that can help us measure it.

I couldn't think of a better way to have spent the last 2.5 years of my life. I am incredibly proud of what the team at @openaeros.bsky.social was able to accomplish. There were many who said this was impossible, but we did the impossible and this is just the start. 😁 #cleanairisahumanright

We believe that clean air researchers and proponents are doing critical work for our health and future. Too few have had access to the tools to investigate the next frontier of airborne pollutants: ultrafine particles. But we have big news... (1/4)

So, why does clean air really *matter*? The hazards we breathe are largely invisible and - the way we usually read the data - the human cost of those hazards has been invisible too. Aaron makes the case than in 2022, poor air quality was the # 1 killer in America (1/) www.youtube.com/live/b45hakf...
Aaron Collins stands at a podium saying "we're going to talk about aerosol science". Behind him are four charts taken from the slides demonstrating the largest causes of American mortality in 2022.

Completely silly this happened you can't cancel science. We will continue to collect some cool data and share it anyways. Plus I feel like you only get a handful times to reference an Indigo Girls song in your title.

In the time since we posted this, entire working groups dedicated to this and related community concerns have been eliminated from the EPA. If you were also slated to present air quality data or programming and would like to join us in presenting online, please reach out!

In the wake of federal changeover, March's EPA air sensor conference has been cancelled. We were excited to present work on community ultrafine exposure to our peers and policy makers. In lieu, we plan to make the presentation to the public online. Abstract is below. You can’t cancel science.
Presentation abstract reads "Closer to (Ultra)Fine: Can a Low-Cost Open-Source Condensation Particle Counter Change the Sensor Landscape?
Presented by Aaron Collins, OpenAeros™
Awareness of the adverse health effects of PM2.5 aerosol exposure is growing, with increasing evidence highlighting the critical role of ultrafine particles (UFP) in harmful exposure. UFPs, including combustion-generated particles below 300 nm, are not detected by low-cost optical particle counters (PM2.5 sensors) due to their limited light scatter.
Similar to the revolution in hyperlocal PM2.5 measurement brought about by low-cost sensors like PurpleAir, the introduction of an open-source, low-cost condensation particle counter (OpenCPC™) offers new opportunities for hyperlocal UFP measurements. These measurements can enhance our understanding of UFP exposure and sources in outdoor spaces, and can address the high spatial concentration gradients associated with UFP measurements. Additionally, leveraging an open-source architecture enables a solution that can scale up to provide improved measurement coverage at deployment costs attainable by communities.
Outdoor UFP exposure was investigated using an OpenCPC counter co-located with a PurpleAir sensor at multiple locations, with data collected over long durations at multiple geographic locations. The total particle number count from PurpleAir sensors (particles >0.3µm) was compared with the OpenCPC’s measurements (particles 0.010 - 1µm). Correlations and trends in fine and ultrafine particle counts were explored, including diurnal trends and the impacts of temperature, humidity, and local fine and ultrafine particle sources."

Welcome to OpenAeros
OpenAeros was founded to apply novel and critical solutions to air quality and respiratory health concerns, making open source hardware designs for the world, so everyone can benefit from our work. https://www.openaeros.com/ Follow us on Twitter : https://twitter.com/OpenAeros Covid/Airborne Illness Mitigation Disclosure: OpenAeros deploys multilayer covid mitigation in our office. All employees, including those in this video, are PCR tested at least twice a workweek and all workspaces are equipped with UVC and filtration-based air cleaners that considerably exceed the ASHRAE 241 CADR standard. The decision to film and post updates unmasked reflects both these working conditions and accessibility considerations for the widest audience.
