I'd probably say that Andor is a thriller/drama - it's avoiding *most* of the pseudo-scifi handwavey stuff and focusing on characters and the systems that the characters are interacting with

The entire purpose of scifi is to tell the philosophy heads to stop thinking and start experiencing lmao Anyway, Star Wars is generally a western. Jedi are cowboys, people have pistols, ships are horses.

For example: Severance is fantastic Scifi, imo. So is Westworld, or Foundation, or Scavenger's Reign. i.e., here's an idea, let's explore the real consequences of that idea. It's why I like Ursula K Le Guin's stuff so much. Like her book The Dispossessed is the only real look at structural anarchy

I honestly don't consider Star Wars sci-fi at all. It's a space western. Scifi is all about taking a concept and crafting a world around the concept, exploring the trials and pitfalls of things in the modern day through use of metaphor and extrapolation.

I have to be honest, I got 2/3rds of the way through the show too so I totally feel you there LMAO It's all really good. It's just also so slow when put to the screen x.x

...internalize complex plot and concepts in a way that most media nowadays just never gets the chance to do. That, coupled with Togashi's ability the write a character that says 12 words and you know their whole deal let's him tell these really complex plots and dynamic characters in a way I love

yeah it's the chimera ant arc, which is a totally different genre than Greed Island. Most people think Greed Island is the weakest arc - I found it interesting because I watched too much yugioh as a kid. The show is long, Chimera Ant especially, but I think the length gives you room to...

Oh hell yeah, and I totally feel you there with the subs. I know that the HxH dubs are pretty good, although HxH sub Killua is one of the best VA's I've ever heard, so I have trouble recommending anime but subbed haha. I dunno how far you got, but if you enjoyed HxH it only gets better and better

The show definitely has fucked up people, and it spends a lot of time on it's characters and how these specific people explore and navigate their roles in the fucked up world that is the authoritarian state. I don't know how to think about if the theme is broad or not, but it's wildly relatable

I mentioned Mob Psycho 100 before, which is THE anime to make you feel like it's ok to be a weird lil' thing, and explores what it means to be weird. I honestly think of it in a similar vein as Dungeon Meshi or Frieren and has multiple of the best complex characters (arcs) in all of the anime genre

Also, the studio that made the Adventure Time Food Chain episode has made a number of fantastic animes. I feel more confident recommending you Ping Pong the Animation, which is a short little thing I think about constantly They also made DandaDan which might not be to your taste, but is quite good

Other things on the mind though, ones that are less shounen-ey: If you liked Monster a lot, you should check out one of the dudes other works: Pluto He re-wrote some arcs of Astro-Boy and it's definitely the same mangaka, who is chewing on similar darker themes.

The show has what I believe to be the best singular arc ever put into an anime, but it's divisive because all the shounen-heads who only want young boys fighting hate it. If you do start watching it and the opening shounen-ness doesn't vibe with you, no biggie, but it *only* gets better

...a whole lot of "What kinds of stories would *actually* get told in a world of consequences if people acted like shounen characters?" There's a lot of "problematic" scenes and characters that are only "problematic" if you don't read into characters and themes.

My favorite of all time is HunterXHunter, which uses the language of the shounen genre to bait anime watchers into a story that is a lot more serious than shounen tends to be, and is endlessly deep. The main character is Goku from dragon ball but he doesn't have plot armor, and the show explores...

Based on this list, you want anime that is much less escapist and more on the "dealing with emotions and connection to real experience" in terms of theming, which is sadly so much of what anime gets made, and most people who want anime are very bad at applying critical thought to anime

Almost all of the ones I'd recommend are already on this list, or are on your to-watch list haha. Frieren, Monster, Utena, Mushi-shi, Witch Hat... I'd probably also want to recommend Mob Psycho 100, and HunterxHunter, although they dip into Shounen so they can subvert the genre.

If you haven’t watched Andor, it’s barely Star Wars! It’s set in the universe of Star Wars but it’s far and away the best thing that exists in the entire IP, and it only uses that as a vehicle to explore the mechanisms of oppression and how change actually happens

I don’t know if I have good suggestions for you specifically, though I have a fairly critical eye which cuts through a lot of chaff pretty quickly, but I’m curious if you’d give any anime a try. I know the whole genre is steeped in tropes but I tend to enjoy fairly subversive or non-tropic anime

It’s fun but it’s also just the simplest game wrapped in bubble gum to sell itself to children haha

I dunno if you watched it pre-season 2 drop but it was one of the most perfect endings, relative the show theme, that I’ve ever seen. Up there with Westworld

This is a thing I notice very strongly myself. It just makes me feel like shit, and I generally have more energy without it than with it. The changes can be hard to see though, especially because our brains are so phenomenal at recontextualizing what “normal” feels like. Everything feels normal

I’m jealous, you definitely have a super power! It might be item dependent too? When I looked for furniture, the only posts that weren’t scamming me in some way, shape or form were either full priced, overselling something, or were just advertisements for a storefront.
