Wizard cop. B-list situationist. Used to be cool. I am interested in British politics and detective stories and woodlice and goofy movies about misunderstandings.

spent a while lurking in one of those "council tax is illegal" FB groups and found the whole thing desperately sad, people posting letters from bailiffs saying they owed thousands and their property was going to be seized & everyone replying with terrible made-up advice that would make things worse

the best ever result for the Greens in an election that everyone could vote in was 15% in the 1989 European elections when the most prominent and recognisable Green party politician in the country at the time was almost certainly David Icke.

I also think a lot of the people saying "remember when Caroline Lucas was leader" need to look at the election results for the periods from 2003 to 2006, 2007 to 2012, and from 2016 to 2018 (when CL was leader). Even if you go from 03-18 constantly it's essentially a flat line at about 3%

coming second in a formerly safe labour seat almost certainly isn't even in the top three foolhardy things the Greens have done over the past seven days and it's not even close

Agreed. Lots of people pretending that this isn't seat no 149 on the Green's target list. Personally I think ZP standing was a bad idea & they would have done better with a different candidate but this was a good result for Labour and a decent second place for Greens, everything else considered

just as Labour accidentally managed to make notoriously uncool Tory leader David Cameron seem cooler by photoshopping him leaning against a car, Kemi is either comparing Burnham to a beloved character & star of the most critically acclaimed film ever OR thinks he's the harbinger of death

This cost £1.75 in 1977 which works out at about £14 in today's money. Love the dedication as well.

My understanding of the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act (2000) is that you are not allowed to record a conversation that you not a part of (eg between third parties), even if it's in your own house, unless authorised by law enforcement or a court order

Ok my pet theory is that he's got £200k from years of selling drugs & is gradually laundering it to pay his mortgage, he also gets super high on his own stash hence has no short term memory, he's a trad libertarian - live and let live for trans ppl, Tory b/c low taxes. Watches WW2 documentaries?

Oh is this the biscuits under the newspaper story? I've got a book by folklorist Jan Brunvand where he finds incidences of this story in urban myths dating back at least 10-15 years before either Adams or Archer ever wrote about it.

(I don't think the Conservatives vote on policy at their conference. Have no idea what happens in the Lib Dems.)
000
oneoneoneone @oneoneoneone.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
I don't think it is, though? In Labour, conference motions are voted on by delegates from CLPs around the country, and the weight of their vote is based on the size of the CLP, so (in theory at least) they represent a constituency party rather that a small selection of hyper-engaged people.

I have a vivid memory of being on a Southern train with a baby and folding down the changing table to discover someone had used it to roll a joint and there were bits of weed and tobacco scattered all over it. Managed to scoop them off and put them by the side for the next stoner baby wrangler.

Ah so the Times (11 May) claims that it was AV without plus a referendum on PR. I *think* David Laws claimed that Brown had offered full PR as a last ditch attempt but I can't find a reference to that anywhere - maybe in Laws' very dull book "22 Days In May"?
010
oneoneoneone @oneoneoneone.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
I mean, *Gordon Brown* of all people offered the Lib Dems PR without a referendum during the dying days of the Lab/Lib coalition negotiations in 2010

oooooh if you get a chance to go to Morrisons their ghost-shaped crumpets are incredible. Still kicking myself for only buying one packet last year and not filling the freezer with them. A big part of the spookiness comes from the unsettling way they burn the eyes and mouth onto the ghost crumpet.

Nobody messes with the Brighton seagulls. Once saw a group of tourists on the beach scramble under their own picnic blanket to escape them. One popped up at my office window a while ago clutching an entire subway sandwich in its beak.

Ancestors can also absolutely mean great grandparents, and it strikes me as pretty distasteful both on the part of the Mail to use this as a gotcha and from people going "yet another lie", particularly where there are clearly many things that he can be criticised for without demanding family trees

I've heard a group of very small children having a very in-depth discussion on the relative merits of alarming deep-sea fish that probably wouldn't be out of place on a marine biology degree course. Helps that the fish all look like this though.

I suspect he'd ride out a narrow second place finish but if they don't even come close to Labour he's in trouble. Greens have leadership elections every two years so could see him being replaced next summer (perhaps by Hannah Spencer?)

obvs a) he's going to get a kicking in the press, b) increasing numbers of people have been driven mad by a combination of text and images and c) the global financial situation is not good, but being the "first PM in a long time to have some bold ideas and want to do them" may go a long way
000
oneoneoneone @oneoneoneone.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
heavy caveat but things like this make me think that Burnham's "we'll do the good things after the next election" strategy *could* work - it's essentially giving progressive voters (and non-mad Tory wets) a clear set of things that they a) broadly want and b) could have if they vote for them

I see absolutely nothing in Miliband's response that implies a maximum age of criminal responsibility nor that certain professions should be above the law. As you point out, if he did believe in criminal exceptions by age and profession then he would have said so.
101
oneoneoneone @oneoneoneone.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
To be fair to Miliband here, this is Marr's phrasing not Miliband's - there's nothing in Miliband's response that implies that it's the age or occupation of the protestors that means that they shouldn't be criminalised.
