tbh the left one feels a lot more atmospheric. The fire is having a more pronounced effect on the environment that makes it seem more tangible and powerful.

Nothing of value to me was compromised. I never had any payment information on that account, I haven't touched it in about 15 years, and obviously I use two factor on everything these days. But the fact Apple has these massive networks operating in front of them without restraint is infuriating.

James Currie @oneofmanyjameses.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
Apple used to be renowned for their cybersecurity. Now there's a massive network of stolen accounts using stolen cards right in front of them. Their systems don't flag the account activity nor the transactions, they don't verify the identity of the account holder or the card owner. It's absurd.

James Currie @oneofmanyjameses.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
I can prove the account was compromised very easily, it's still in my email, but I can't seem to do anything about it. Today it was used to buy a ChatGPT subscription with a (presumably) stolen card in the name of a Mr Williams. Neither Apple nor OpenAI seem interested in doing anything about it.

I fucking hate Apple. An account from 15 years ago (so pre-two factor) I didn't even know I had got compromised. Rather than sunset old accounts like other companies, Apple just leaves these poorly secured, forgotten accounts on the books. Apple knows they get hacked all the time and does nothing.

But the "historical features" are also a bit of a mess. I don't know why a small and simplistic faux-classical building in a small and simplistic faux-classical town is so impressive, especially when far better could have been made in Blender or Unreal in a day.

One of the odd things about seeing a public history project like AskHistorians grow over the years is how it's become part of the press tour for history books. Having the impact to be worth seeking out for that feels great. But getting National Geographic and Tom Hiddleston is another level!

Holy crap, actual Vatican 2 schism! Checked in on my favourite tradcath geocentrists, or tried to (can't find where Rick DeLano posts these days). Robert Sungenis' stance is "you're right about Vatican 2 but why would you go and get yourselves excommunicated?"

Starmer isn't to blame for the choices of the Tories, obviously. But he is no less obviously to blame for his own choices while in power. One of those has been to deprioritise key aspects of our military capability. We clearly need better missile defences, Starmer has decided we don't. That's on him
000
James Currie @oneofmanyjameses.bsky.social · 01/07/2026
Our navy is already in a dismal state. That isn't on Starmer but it's future will be. He is choosing to make the problem worse to save money, no better than a Tory. That this plan leaves us without a future destroyer programme should be criticised by even the most loyal Starmerite. It's insanity.
100
James Currie @oneofmanyjameses.bsky.social · 01/07/2026
The Type 45 is our primary (perhaps only) defence against ballistic missiles and it'll age out with no replacement while ballistic missile technology is improving among countries with hostile intentions toward the UK like Russia and Iran, so Starmer's DIP leaves us in a very dangerous position.
100
James Currie @oneofmanyjameses.bsky.social · 01/07/2026
He isn't attacking Starmer for not fixing it in 18 months, you don't seem to understand what the DIP is about. The DIP isn't about the past. It's the document outlining the government's future spending plans for the armed forces. Starmer's DIP notably scraps plans to replace the Type 45 destroyer.
100
James Currie @oneofmanyjameses.bsky.social · 01/07/2026
Pointing out the deep flaws of the DIP is hardly a "cheap shot". We have very little ballistic missile defence outside of ships we're planning to scrap, that's wholly unacceptable. A "cheap shot" isn't when a guy criticises Starmer for making a catastrophic decision that makes the UK less safe.

I want social media regulated. I don't think a 13 year old should have unfettered access to TikTok. But I want it done competently. I am against the banning of educational material, and I don't support making Meta more powerful and more wealthy by forcing people to de-anonymise their accounts.

James Currie @oneofmanyjameses.bsky.social · 15/06/2026
"This would capture user-to-user platforms, whose purpose is to enable social interaction and which allow users to post material, alongside algorithms." That definition would certainly include Reddit. www.gov.uk/government/n...

With our budget of £100 and some crisps? Not happening. We get nearly 2m visitors a week, that's not cheap to support. It being on Reddit is core to both the functionality and the outreach, but most of all to its affordability. There's no money in history, especially if trying to remain independent.

James Currie @oneofmanyjameses.bsky.social · 15/06/2026
"Is reddit in the ban?" So you haven't even read the damn thing. Waste of time.
210
James Currie @oneofmanyjameses.bsky.social · 15/06/2026
Losing their under-16 users (who these days are a small portion of the user base) is a worthwhile trade because they can then use the IDs of the adults to cross-reference other data profiles and assemble them together into a much more valuable package that increases overall revenue.
110
James Currie @oneofmanyjameses.bsky.social · 15/06/2026
This tells me you don't know how these companies make money. Meta is actually the biggest financier supporting bans despite being opposed in public, as the data profile of an account dictates how valuable it is to advertise to and destroying online anonymity increases the value massively.
110
James Currie @oneofmanyjameses.bsky.social · 15/06/2026
You don't seem to grasp the difference between what is optional and what is mandatory. I don't have to give Facebook my face or driver's license to advertise a local event. Under this ban I would, and that creates both stronger data profiles for targeting as well as a massive cybersecurity risk.
000
James Currie @oneofmanyjameses.bsky.social · 15/06/2026
Yes I am aware the internet is large, thanks for the patronisation. As someone who helps run r/AskHistorians, no there are not other places to do what we do. If there were we would have moved there long ago. A place that does that would legally count as social media and come under regulation.
210
James Currie @oneofmanyjameses.bsky.social · 15/06/2026
Other than failing to keep kids safe, it blocks a vast quantity of educational material while giving social media companies even more license to harvest data from adults. A 17 year old can join the army and pay tax but can't look at YouTube past their government mandated bedtime. It's a farce.
010
James Currie @oneofmanyjameses.bsky.social · 15/06/2026
I never said the current system is good and you're assuming I did and saying I have rampant cognitive dissonance, which I do not appreciate. I just don't think it's necessary or good to block educational material or controlled social spaces from those doing their GCSEs and discovering their hobbies

James Currie @oneofmanyjameses.bsky.social · 15/06/2026
Hank's not going to be popping off on Vimeo. And if he did it would get regulated as harmful social media. Now the government has decided r/AskHistorians is too harmful for a 15 year old, which is absurd in the extreme. It's not all or nothing, you don't have to use a sledgehammer to crack a nut.
210
James Currie @oneofmanyjameses.bsky.social · 15/06/2026
Hobby forums on Reddit or watching Hank Green explain a type of fish on YouTube isn't harmful ideation or ruining young minds. Throwing the baby out with the bathwater while empowering big tech companies to conduct even more mass surveillance to feed more harmful algorithms for the adults isn't good
130
James Currie @oneofmanyjameses.bsky.social · 15/06/2026
This isn't taking on the tech bros, it is empowering them with a whole new data market while giving victims no further recourse. Meanwhile we're telling 17 year olds - who can join the army, pay tax, and sometimes vote - that they can't watch YouTube past their state mandated bedtime. It's a farce.

What an insult to the students, who worked hard in an institution that could not even be bothered to read their names. The reputational damage cannot have been worth the "efficiency" of... what exactly? I doubt making an AI programme was cheaper and easier than printing the stack of name cards.

I think there will be lots of little bits of good news for Greens and the Lib Dems, and parts of the UK firmly reject Reform, but there's no getting around the fact that most of Britain wants to double down on the right wing populism and corruption that has already wrecked our country's finances.
051
James Currie @oneofmanyjameses.bsky.social · 08/05/2026
Lib Dems are currently making more gains than the Greens but no mention of them... as usual.

James Currie @oneofmanyjameses.bsky.social · 06/05/2026
I'm not sure I've ever seen someone miss the point of learning more than this. "Do not provide disclaimers", "You do not need to tell me it is important to consider anything" are fundamentally stupid things to demand when also asking for "long and detailed" answers of "world class expert" quality.
000
James Currie @oneofmanyjameses.bsky.social · 06/05/2026
I'm not sure if that's better or worse than the conspiracy of silence my Lib Dems get. We've had more coverage through reporting Tory attacks on us than directly about us from national press. I just listened to 40 mins of podcast about the locals that didn't mention us once! It's a rigged game
000
James Currie @oneofmanyjameses.bsky.social · 06/05/2026
There are issues with the Greens at this election, especially around vetting candidates, but even then there's a clear double standard in how the press treats Reform and the Tories compared to the other parties When I stood last year I could not have said some of what the local Tories got away with

I am a centre left voter who wants a nicer country where people can be themselves and have economic security. They've become the face of British progressive politics and claim to want to represent me. Polanski's confident ignorance is a large part of why the Greens cannot represent me.
100
James Currie @oneofmanyjameses.bsky.social · 23/04/2026
That means not making demonstrably false statements about Russia, and Polanski isn't doing a good job of that. Progressivism isn't winning in the UK; the press is against us, the government is inept, people are driven to hatred by social media. He needs to do better than shoot himself in the foot.
000
James Currie @oneofmanyjameses.bsky.social · 23/04/2026
Maybe don't take your pointers from an obvious pro-Russian propaganda account. Read corroborated reports not tweets. Point is, unless the Greens can be free of tankies and other uncritically anti-western people, British progressivism will suffer and lack credibility.

James Currie @oneofmanyjameses.bsky.social · 23/04/2026
Yes, and you should see how Russian media talk about Ukraine and Ukrainians. It's the same language, if not worse. Western parts are in Russian missiles, our sanctions are half-hearted and easily evaded. I get the anti-establishment sentiment here but don't let it give you blind spots.

Allegations of genocide of Ukrainians in the Russo-Ukrainian war - Wikipedia

James Currie @oneofmanyjameses.bsky.social · 23/04/2026
Yeah that doesn't help. He's making demonstrably false claims about Putin in Ukraine in the full quote. I'm willing to be generous but this is a terrible choice of words, and he needs to be careful around this stuff and seriously educate himself about what Putin is actually doing.
100
James Currie @oneofmanyjameses.bsky.social · 23/04/2026
I just explained it to you. Putin HAS threatened genocide and is currently conducting one against the Ukrainian people. Polanski either denies this or doesn't know this. Either is really bad. If he'd said "I've never seen Netanyahu's government threaten genocide", maybe you'd get it.
300
James Currie @oneofmanyjameses.bsky.social · 23/04/2026
He suggested Putin isn't committing genocide nor threatens genocide against Ukraine when, like Netanyahu, he is wanted by the ICC for crimes in this area. Putin's regime abducts kids to "Russify" them and makes regular threats against the entire Ukrainian people. He is apparently ignorant of this.

My hottest “I have no data to back this up” take is that phones aren’t making young people less happy. What’s making them less happy is living in a world where everyone is having their reality defined by recommendation algorithms that can only care about whether something keeps you watching.
Young adult happiness is falling. Percent of young people who are pretty or very happy has dropped from 88% to 76% over the last 15 years after having held fairly steady between 1980 and 2010

They think the problem with our tax system is technocratic implementation and not fundamental. Populism both left and right often starts from real economic unfairness, and while not needing utility bills to prove identity is nice who in Labour thinks people support Reform or Green over the HMRC app?

Taking the claim of a downed F-35 at face value is extremely poor journalism, especially when the wreckage is clearly that of an F-15E.

On the doorstep it seemed to me that middle aged and older had bigger issues with social media addiction than teenagers and young adults. Our generation grew up as social media became malicious, we're at least a little wise to it. They're not. But "think of the children" as policy looks better.

I find this sort of thing so weird. I don't know what Canadian conservativism has to do with Robin Hood, but he's been portrayed as a champion of the poor from the earliest references to his legend in the 14th century. Even in the early ballads, "rob the rich, give to the poor" is his thing.
