ms shone in those, and they were the ones that gave us a rock band vision long before any of them swerved that way in solo work (or even the sg)... need them to do fun energetic ads again 😔 or something like power/the japanese mvs. their understanding of nostalgia targets the wrong eras for me

this is a follow-up to yesterday's thread:

j @onemoonbelow.bsky.social · 01/04/2026
if we take a principled stance against genai use in fandom, we owe this to ourselves. it's been three years, we are surrounded by genai text, we must learn to recognise it, if only to avoid it. but more importantly, we owe one another the reading of our writing with the same care that goes into it
100
j @onemoonbelow.bsky.social · 01/04/2026
they can easily set up shop on a new account should it fail & they do end up being exposed as a genai user--but the denial is strong joining the outrage uninformedly means walking right into their trap. we need take the time to form an opinion first, to take the 5-10min to take a look at their ao3
100
j @onemoonbelow.bsky.social · 01/04/2026
genai users want attention without putting in a fraction of the work that writing entails. sharing such allegations is a great way to generate more of it, easily, quickly, despite its risks. people tend to forget that for them, the stakes are incredibly low *because* they didn't put in as much work
100
j @onemoonbelow.bsky.social · 01/04/2026
ensuring it's extended to them not following a kneejerk reaction (that will only serve to add more cover to their taking advantage of the trust of their readers), but instead coming from a place of being informed, having taken the time to look into it oneself and knowing defending them is justified
100
j @onemoonbelow.bsky.social · 01/04/2026
genai users not labelling genai text has made it impossible to assume in good faith that this was a writer enduring false allegiations (if accused by a human! not a bot) that's the bleak reality of the situation, and i genuinely don't think that extending unfaltering solidarity to everyone without
100
j @onemoonbelow.bsky.social · 01/04/2026
i'm aware that public genai use allegiations go against the spirit of fandom and provoke the kind of protectiveness & reassurance any writer would hope to reveive when confronted with one themselves but to reiterate: genai text is common on ao3, we have to prioritise curiosity over immediate upset
100
j @onemoonbelow.bsky.social · 01/04/2026
fic is imperfect, making mistakes is human--but these mistakes aren't. and one would know the difference if they read with care (yes this is about the recent case that gained traction on twitter. the person is clearly a genai user, and one of those who don't bother with reading/editing llm output)
100
j @onemoonbelow.bsky.social · 01/04/2026
so when people come to the defence of someone's supposed fic, without even entertaining the idea that it may be genai text, and with this lack of self-respect and pride in their own writing insist that these mistakes were ones anyone could make, i lose respect for them and their image of fic writers
100
j @onemoonbelow.bsky.social · 01/04/2026
from my reading experience, i'd say maybe 1/20 fics has one, usually something like the name of a character that has yet to be disclosed to the pov character. with genai text, it's 18/20 texts. and they're very different: it's often time/place/season-related, or a total reset of prior events
100
j @onemoonbelow.bsky.social · 01/04/2026
equally insulting is the assumption people seem to generally hold that these mistakes, in their frequency, were human. but they're not, they're an explicit sign of genai use, and have very little in common with the continuity mistakes writers make--and writers don't make them anywhere near as often
100
j @onemoonbelow.bsky.social · 01/04/2026
if someone doesn't take to recognising writing styles, despite how incredibly unique they are, fine but i find it insulting to which degree continuity mistakes are overlooked, and i say this as someone with a very bad memory, and about mistakes occurring several paragraphs away from one another
100
j @onemoonbelow.bsky.social · 01/04/2026
i'm very aware this is a thorny topic, but my point re: some readers, a large enough proportion, evidently being careless readers stands, and is proven time and again by how easily genai text can be passed off as fic, to the point of genai users gaining large followings on ao3
100
j @onemoonbelow.bsky.social · 31/03/2026
this isn't an argument in favour of more mistrust. i'd just like people to take these dynamics into account, and generally assume about 15-30 percent of works in a fandom's tag to be ai-generated, undeclaredly so there's a reason why ao3 keeps hitting new millions of works milestones in record time
010
j @onemoonbelow.bsky.social · 31/03/2026
and/or stop 'writing' indefinitely. which also serves to frame them as the victims--in the same manner as someone writing their own fic met with such an accusation might react, in the heat of the moment. (personally, i would fight tooth and nail for my work, however much this would wound me)
110
j @onemoonbelow.bsky.social · 31/03/2026
another thing to keep in mind is that this is of course not the reaction of all genai users. there's a pattern of genai text being deleted far sooner and more frequently compared to fic (for the obvious reasons), and so some genai users, when confronted, will immediately delete all of their uploads
110
j @onemoonbelow.bsky.social · 31/03/2026
it's a simple, effective trap. many walk into it without thinking of scrutinising the genai text in question, since even the thought of scrutinising it is seen as shameful, + lack of skill to identify it. when it was the genai user who broke trust first by not labelling their uploads as ai-generated
110
j @onemoonbelow.bsky.social · 31/03/2026
ever be deemed false. genai users are very aware of these mechanisms and take advantage of them, shamelessly. after all, a false accusation always generates attention, dl;dr invocations, sympathy, pity-reads, supportive comments; with enough reach it will pull in new readers
110
j @onemoonbelow.bsky.social · 31/03/2026
in the case of accurate genai use accusations, it sets off the following mechanisms: immediate outrage--by those why sympathise, by readers who enjoy genai text (likely unaware). by fellow writers, who were deceived by the genai user. there is no reckoning with the accusation, because it can only
110
j @onemoonbelow.bsky.social · 31/03/2026
the result of this: many genai use accusations are coming from bots, at random. many genai use accusations are false, and may be informed by a desire to destroy someone's reputation or stir up drama. quite a few genai use accusations are accurate.
110
j @onemoonbelow.bsky.social · 31/03/2026
what one has to keep in mind about genai users is that they are liars. they lie always and plenty in order to carve out their space in fandom, and i'd assume this to be to the extent of asking friends to beta-read genai text... traditional plagiarists behave the same way too, in order to socialise
120
j @onemoonbelow.bsky.social · 31/03/2026
(there is a general tendency these days to file every negative comment as a hate bot comment. quite a few human-written hate comments are dismissed this way--while of course some still never heard of the hate bots and understand those to be human haters)
110
j @onemoonbelow.bsky.social · 31/03/2026
at the same time, accusations of genai use seem to be treated as greater violations of the trust between reader & writer than untagged genai use itself. and not to be forgotten: the genai bots going around accusing users vaguely and randomly have muddied the waters and also led to mistrust
110
j @onemoonbelow.bsky.social · 31/03/2026
one other notable factor is, very frankly: many readers enjoy genai text. there's no denying this. refusing to grapple with the appeal of ai-generated text and questioning one's standards for fic contributes to immediate denial and outrage whenever someone is suspected of genai use
110
j @onemoonbelow.bsky.social · 31/03/2026
moralising genai usage lead to the kind of stigma that lead to genai users not tagging genai text as such and now we've reached a point where at times it can be difficult to identify genai text as such--some markers are usually present and obvious still, but readers still lack familiarity with them
110
j @onemoonbelow.bsky.social · 31/03/2026
it appears fandom at large underestimates how common the presence of unlabelled genai text on ao3 is to the same degree it is ignorant to the negative effects of a (seemingly) generally agreed upon opposition to genai usage in fandom

j @onemoonbelow.bsky.social · 24/03/2026
ao3 will canonise every single tag out there and then still not give us the t4t one (which had 5k+ fics under its belt, last time i checked)

the last crackship i remember seeing was kjd/jesus maybe three three years ago, and the fic merely gained scrutiny and some harassment (and readers surprised by how much they liked it). i wasn't around yet when the infamous bbh/oba-ma crackship started (2014...?) so i wonder where this one will go
010
j @onemoonbelow.bsky.social · 05/02/2026
people invented a new crackship (bbh/b-ad bunny) and it gained enough steam over the past two days that now there's a fic, fanart, a video edit, fake bubble updates, photoshopped encounters, and so much excitement. haven't seen anything like it in this fandom in ages ;u;
