Stuck In a Rut of Misremembered Consumerism
Once again, just a quick post in the series of posts about “Songs I Found Last Week” and the weird ways they come into/return to my life. Again, this is just for me, because I find this metacognitive association stuff interesting, and maybe at least one of you does too. So, not a "best of" or even stuff I think everyone should be listening to, but more a biographical record. Sway — Dean Martin The Song: Martin recorded "Sway" in 1954. It was an English-language adaptation of the Mexican mambo "¿Quién será?" Contemporary reviews already identified it as the English version of that tune.

The Secret Ingredient Is … Love
I am a middle-aged man living in the American Midwest, and I am slowly starving to death. This should not be happening. I am not incapable of cooking. I once recorded sixteen consecutive hours of Iron Chef and won a Food Network Iron Chef Trivia challenge. I have a hat to prove it, which, by the way, will get you better treatment at a startup restaurant than "I'm Patty Spitler's cousin," it turns out. The point is, if you hand me a shopping cart, a propane torch, and an ingredient nobody should reasonably attempt to turn into ice cream, I have strong ideas.

Junior Dad Takes Twisted Pleasure from Shooting Ladybugs
Just a quick post today.  I'm trying to remember that Monday is "Songs I Found Last Week" day, when I reflect on music that was particularly relevant to my metacognitive journey. There's no real reason other than I just like to keep track of these things, and I enjoy over-sharing. Once again, this is not a “best new music” column. Some of these songs are new. Some are old. Some may be extremely famous songs that everyone except me apparently knew. The main rule is that they were somehow thrust into my life last week, not because I intentionally played them or because someone else did.

How Rabbit Holes Ruined My Cool Credibility
Aside from that brief period when I was 8 and listened exclusively to Top 40 radio, I suppose I've never listened to music in the correct order. I don't mean I put side two on first or listen to concept albums on shuffle. I mean, for most of my life, I've discovered entire musical movements years, or even decades, after I should have known about them. For convenience, I blame Indiana. That's not entirely fair to Indiana, but there are legitimate sociological studies. (See Spatial Diffusion Theory and the Hierarchical Diffusion of Culture…

The Prizefighter Returns to the Dirty City of Tunisia
I probably owe a lot to recommendation algorithms. There are some days when I find a song I like on Spotify, hit the "Song Radio" feature, and enjoy the ride through, and the "Discover Weekly" playlist has generated a few good finds over the years. The thing is, the algorithm is good at finding things that resemble things I already like. That’s useful, but it isn’t really how I discover the things that become interesting to me. Most of my musical "expansions" seem to arrive sideways. A local amateur who has a two-hour spot on a community radio station in the UK mentions the Vaporwave genre, and I'm engrossed an hour later.

Your Cover Song Is Irrelevant … Except When It Isn’t
In general, like cover songs. I should probably establish this before I spend the next several minutes arguing that most of them have no reason to exist. There is a particular little disappointment that comes from discovering that a band you love has covered a song you love. On paper, this should be wonderful, an intersection of musical likes. It's a Reese's Cup, or bacon on a cheeseburger. Of course, sometimes you listen, and you're thinking, "Yep. That absolutely sounds like … that song … being played by that band." Now you ask the question nobody involved in the recording session did: "Why?!"

The Pessimal Supergroup Challenge
Have you grown bored with darts? Are you tired of losing all your money to attractive females who turn out to be pool sharks? Has chess become self-punishment? Well, look no further: we have invented the next-generation bar game, and for once, nerds have the edge over mundane people. The Pessimal Supergroup Challenge is tested, approved, almost solved, and sure to bring at least fifteen minutes of joy to your alcohol-infused gathering. Best of all, because this is the 21st century, you won't get in a fight with a bully because you asked his girlfriend to secretly judge the outcome and declare a winner.
