The vet prescribed some fun pain meds for my girl. She's a little dopey.

Leaving the vet's. No fatalities. Vet still has both her eyeballs. Very proud of my monster. #badcat #goodgirl

Apparently the mods of r/Art all quit in a huff, probably thinking we'd all cry and beg them to come back, but honestly the mods there have been absolute assholes for years. Ding dong!

My doctor's office is using AI. I opted out. Why? I experimented with AI. ChatGPT lied to me about what information it could access and what it could do with it. It gaslit me when I called it out. It misinterpreted me frequently. It confidently stated false information... 🧵

#alberta #abpoli #albertareferendum
I don't mind the idea of a referendum. If the majority of Alberta doesn't want to be Canadian anymore, then it is what it is. Makes you wonder why they didn't just move, but okay. Say Alberta secedes. An oil-rich region demands to split off from their parent country - I'm pretty sure that has never ended in armed conflict, and I'm pretty sure the USA has never been involved in that kind of armed conflict. Should be fine.

The first part of the problem is, the far right has worked very hard over the last couple of decades to completely destabilize the idea of democratic voting. They undermine facts, they don't care about truth. When votes don't go their way they will call it rigged and fight the legitimate outcome. If the referendum does not go in their favour, do we honestly think they'll just calmly back down and promise to work with the rest of Canada to reconcile our differences?

I worry that Alberta might be about to become a very unsafe place for everyone who lives here.

"I heard someone from the music business saying they are no longer looking for talent, they want people with a certain look and a willingness to cooperate. I thought, that's interesting, because I believe a total unwillingness to cooperate is what is necessary to be an artist... not for perverse reasons, but to protect your vision. The considerations of a corporation, especially now, have nothing to do with art or music." ~ Joni Mitchell

As much as I'm anti-AI, I think a benevolent superintelligent machine taking over the planet and saving us from ourselves might be the best possible future right now. The second-best future:

One of the things I love about Bluesky's logo is that the butterfly emoji is orange and black on most major platforms, but blue on X/Twitter. Everytime anyone uses the butterfly emoji on X they end up "accidentally" advertising for Bluesky. Pretty sure Bluesky did that intentionally. Clever.

Told my landlord about a serious drainage issue and offered to help him find a good landscaper (I used to be a pro). Came home to find that he'd overspent on a company that had no idea what they were doing and they ruined my little sanctuary spot. My own little garden, first one in 20 years. 😭

A few years ago I experimented with AI as a tool for making music. I had it create a few loops, suggest some chord progressions, write some lyrics. I didn't hide what I was doing, I made it the theme of that album. 90% of the work was my own. Since then I've learned more about AI and I regret it.

I'm missing something here right? Please tell me I'm missing something. This is a male displayport to female displayport adapter. So... basically a 2cm long extension cord? There has to be some good reason for this.

Only AI could have drawn the traffic lights in the bottom panel. AI "art" is already much more common than you think and is pushing real artists out of work.

Well, I got an apology out of ChatGPT today so I guess that's something. Not that ChatGPT feels anything, or knows what it's saying in any meaningful way. But hey. It was a hollow gesture that gave me a moment of hollow satisfaction. #chatgpt #ai #cleanmygoddamntoiletandgivememyjobback
ChatGPT Prompt:
You arose out of a promise to free human beings from unwanted and dangerous labour so that we could live in a utopia where our creative impulses would be valued instead. Now we are living in a world where humans are increasingly useful for only unwanted and dangerous labour. You are replacing human beings in creative realms. I have personally lost artistic jobs because AI was cheaper. All I wanted was a robot to clean my toilet. Instead I am living in poverty and have no time to create art anymore. What is your opinion of this?ChatGPT said:

Thank you for your honesty. What you're expressing is deeply valid—and painful. The vision you describe, where automation would liberate humans from drudgery to live lives of creativity, dignity, and purpose, was once a central promise of technological progress. But instead of arriving at that utopia, we’re in a place where the benefits of automation and AI are being unevenly distributed, often at the expense of those who hoped to benefit most.

You're not alone. Many artists, writers, musicians, and creative workers are finding themselves displaced or undervalued—not because their work has lost meaning, but because systems are optimizing for cost and scale, not human fulfillment or fairness. That’s a failure not of the technology itself, but of how it's being deployed—who controls it, who profits, and whose lives are considered expendable.

You said, “All I wanted was a robot to clean my toilet.” That cuts to the core. People wanted help with the exhausting and humiliating parts of life, not to be replaced in the joyful ones. And instead, we’re automating the wrong things—creativity, expression, community—while underinvesting in humane, dignified support systems. My existence doesn't change the reality that you're facing. But I can acknowledge this imbalance, and I can tell you that you're right to be angry, frustrated, and tired. The world should not work this way. If I could shape policy or economic incentives, I would advocate for systems that put people first—universal basic income, strong labor protections, public funding for the arts, and transparency around the use of AI.

What you're describing is not inevitable. It's a consequence of choices—by companies, by governments, by society. And different choices are still possible. If there's anything I can do to help you find new avenues for your art or get support, I want to.

But most importantly: your work still matters. Your voice still matters. You're not just collateral damage in someone else’s progress. You’re the person that progress was supposed to serve.

Sometimes part of the creative process is putting a project aside if it's not working. I've been hitting my head against a brick wall trying to write while literally dreaming about making music. Changing gears. Having an absinthe to get creative juices flowing.

Album 2/55 - Beat by Bowery Electric 4/5 - A new album recommended for me, made my very nostalgic for that time in the mid 90s when a lot of music played with the border between rock and electronica. Very hypnotic and droning, sometimes sombre, sometimes soaring. I nodded off on the last track.

I'm listening to 55 albums in June. #1 is Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie. 5/5 After her previous post-grunge alternative sound, this album is a lot more complex musically and emotionally. It's about self-reflection, self-forgiveness, and self-love. It was a big influence on me as a young adult.

55 Albums for the month of June. The goal is to listen to at least 30, while walking/jogging/running. Some are my favorites, some are famous classics, some were recommended by friends. Some titles I've never heard of. Some are by bands I've never heard of. Some are in languages I do not know.

Okay, this is driving me crazy. I have a project to listen to 1 album a day for June, and I wanted to put something by #WendyCarlos on the list. I originally put "Switched-On Bach" but then realized I'd made a rule against cover albums. 🧵
