Lastly your girlfriend just comes back to life at the end without a single line of dialogue explaining how that happened. lol I guess I also expected some kind of twist and didn’t realize the battle with Psaro was actually the end. Overall I liked the game a lot but the end left me confused. lol

A few things - Alena’s tale was incomplete, we never find out what happened to the people in the castle. There’s also never an explanation for why monsters are chasing Torneko. The Zenthian Dragon killed your dad and banished your mom but then says that you were foretold and longed for.

Dragon Quest games need only one tip to beat them all, grind and enjoy the story. I never get annoyed with grinding in these games either and I think it’s because there’s no real death in the game. You keep your items and XP when you die. Wish more series did it like that.

So Dragon Quest IV has the chapters to prepare you for the game itself. Dragon Quest V is just like…you gon die… lol I got wiped by a full spread of slimes…first time that’s ever happened to me in a Dragon Quest game and it was like my second battle in the game. Very Humbling…lol

I both loved and hated the chapter structure. I loved it because it allowed you to learn to enjoy each character separately before putting them together. I hated it because it meant 5 times of staring at level 1. lol

Yeah I started with 4. Feels like I’m probably about 75% of the way through it but I could be wrong. DQ games love to do the “this is the end, oh wait no it’s not” trope. lol

Did I spend 4 hours today trying to beat a boss in DQIV that has an incredibly easy gimmick to exploit but my dumbass forgot about it entirely? Yes…yes I did… (Minor Spoilers) And for DQIV veterans it was the chapter 4 boss fight and I completely forgot getting the key item to make the fight easy.

Dragon Quest VIII is maybe the best JRPG I’ve ever played, even topping my past favorite Suikoden. I got sucked into it and it didn’t let go. Just finished it tonight and now I’m playing the HD-2D remake of III.

The great part about only getting really into JRPGs in my 40s is that there are so many amazing games to play. Currently playing through Dragon Quest 8 and it’s rising in the ranks of my favorites. My favorite being Suikoden, the only JRPG I couldn’t put down as a teen.

Dragon Quest games take the “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” approach to their games. No matter what game in the series you play you can beat them in exactly the same fashion. It allows their stories to be front and center without a bunch of new features you have to learn with each game.

Chained Echoes is the first turn based RPG I’ve played that I can say transported my brain back to the first time I played Suikoden, my all time favorite RPG. They’re very different games but the feeling of exploration and excitement I got with each section and scene was very reminiscent.

…made me feel emotional about the people in sector 7 and what happened to them. I was shocked with how true to the original it was while also adding just enough to let them get creative with the story. I was never mad about a difference from the original because they made it make sense instantly.

Oh god that takes me back. Only thing I can think of is "Big Red" which was slamming the ball into the ground inside your square as hard as possible and it couldn't be touched until the second bounce, also if it ended up bouncing back into your own square, or outside of the 4 squares, you were out.
