VAR overturning yellow into a DOGSO red hadn't happened for a couple of years and didn't happen for very similar clear red cards over the the season (bar also correct MLS red card). A case of VAR being used more liberally than before and since, felt awful following Rice/Trossard even if correct.

More VAR than we've had is better. Less calls when the attacker has no chance is good, but some of the stuff defenders get away with is ludicrous and lowers goals Delays from insisting that the ref has a little ceremony going to a screen instead of just trusting VAR for easy calls are the issue.

12 red cards, 2 for mouth covering, 3 for bad tackles, 1 for violent conduct, 6 for dogso. Didn't rewatch every one so might be slightly wrong on dogso/violent conduct count.

They've consistent in minimising VAR and leaning towards no calls. There's been some exceptions and inconsistencies but it's been a pretty steady line. Of 12 red cards, 3 are tackles by my count, (against Qatar, Uruguay and now the USA), with this being the only VAR intervention. Most are DOGSO.

I think in most contexts sure, CL PL etc it's not at all out of place. But they've let worse red cards go, actual intentional tackles that are clearly dangerous (scissor tackles from behind, Musiala angrily diving in at 100 mph, hits to the face) Seems like a strange VAR call in that context.

Rules state it's first contact, not leaving the boot, which is very black and white when you have sensors in the ball.

He brings the attacker down, and it's not through the accepted body checks, he just jumps into him. I don't get how it's not a foul tbh.

Similarly, how on earth is Konsa jumping from behind and hooking the attackers thigh preventing a clean shot without ever touching the ball not a penalty. Ref brain is a truly wonderful, mysterious phenomenon.

Perhaps the largest triangle ever drawn with 3 consecutive shots? Urgently need someone with access to a large dataset to Claude this to confirm.

Hitting someone in the face for no reason is a textbook red in the rules of the game, prem refs just love ignoring violent conduct so it feels weird when it's called correctly.

I feel like no one is mentioning the knee into calf contact which is a definite foul. It's just outside the box though saving it from VAR but ridiculous that the ref doesn't call a foul.

Om Nom Zombie @omnomzombie.bsky.social · 30/05/2026
It's still definitely a foul from the knee to calf but that was just outside the box

Which mostly just serve to make things inconsistent between competitions and the laws worse overall. But hey maybe they'll fix the 'no booking for tactical fouls if advantage is played' loophole in a decade or two.

Om Nom Zombie @omnomzombie.bsky.social · 06/05/2026
It's not in the actual laws of the game as far as I can tell, but is on an ifab website (www.footballrules.com/offences-san...) It's definitely not a core part of handball and having this as even a guideline while the White/Davies calls off their bodies are 'correct' is insane

Haaland goal is marked open play as well despite kick offs clearly being set pieces, so it's really 0.76 open play xG

Started with a defence of Marli Salmon, Mosquera, Norgaard and Calafiori, with Havertz Trossard and Dowman as midfielders. Not a lot of control, unfamiliar formation etc

I think a red is ridiculous but I do fundamentally support refs giving yellow cards for accidents like that. Like yeah this was an accident but players get away with so much because refs don't punish outcomes and let players enjoy too much benefit of the doubt. Player safety suffers as a result.

Physicality allowed for headers has always been different in open play vs set pieces.

Hey now he scored 5 from 2.1 npxG last season in only 800 minutes. So clearly he's a generational finisher, next Heung Min Son.

They had a 0.93 xG chance after a rebound off the post 2 minutes before that at 90+2! 1.92 /2.6 xG coming from those two moments in added time at 4-0 down

It was DCL tbf, might not put him over 0.7 in that chance myself.

A fun fact about how bad Burnley are is that -1.43 xG difference per game would be the worst out of any team in the top 5 leagues in any season since 17/18 (as far back as FBRef goes), with Southampton the only team that's close to as bad (next one down is around -1.2 per gamd).

Should have figured, but felt like an obligatory mention. You could always start playing Old School Runescape if you're ready to risk never being able to quit it. Is essentially mouse only until later on. Thinky level would depend entirely on how casually you would play.

Slay the Spire is an obvious recommendation if you haven't already played it. Darkest Dungeon is also an idea maybe.

Personally I'm grieving Joao Pedro having his first non-blocked open play shot in the box this season for Chelsea. Was an impressive run.

He has yet to have an open play shot in the box this season that was not blocked. Keeping up with his shot map/shot count is a fun weekly activity for the whole family.

His first is orange as well. Knee hits Gabriel high on his standing leg and bends it, while being ridiculously late.

Since these names have all been out there forever, it felt like Eze would have been more fine when combined with a younger striker signing in Sesko rather than another similarly aged signing in Gyokeres.

But if you watch a video of the free kick goals that did happen last season, 30-50% possibly infringe on this rule. youtu.be/B0Ji0BRKiKU?...

It's also good and smart to hedge your bets by doing it twice in the same transfer window.

Really wish the Arsenal fan base understood this. For some reason it has completely lost it's mind over the idea of buying a 23 year old direct winger who's improved year over year who gets shots and gets the ball into the box.

Don't even need to sort the bars on FBRef this time, just need to ignore what league it was in.

Personally I was leaning towards Sesko a fair bit, but apparently RB Leipzig were holding firm on a 90m euro valuation and that seems quite steep for a bit of a project. Here's hoping all the Portuguese fans claiming he's definitely amazing and not a Darwin are right.

I mean I think pretty much every game has players saying fuck off at the ref/linesman, so you absolutely could. If you're going to start enforcing something like this it needs to be communicated beforehand and then enforced consistently, ideally by all of the refs in a given competition.

In the standings 7 points is 27th. Don't need to change too many results among the top 24 to drop a few of the 11/10 point teams to 8 points and have 24th be at 8 points.

3 of them scandalous decisions, and the 4th was a scandalous VAR intervention given precedents (and all dogso incidents since)

Why is it brutal? It's just luck, variance, the foundation of football. The attacker hasn't done anything wrong, he's just gotten lucky.

It's a combo of refs being influenced by narratives (media and internal), Arsenal being a bit guilty of it, and refs only punishing teams for this if they're getting a result (win or good draw). We're usually winning, so we get punished maximally, in addition to the biases refs have.

Problem is less the advantage rule, more that you can't book for "stopping a promising attack" if advantage is played.
