I had totally forgotten it was the Games Expo this weekend. It was less than great last year so I hope the new management have turned it around for you. Where are you staying?

I think they should, but anecdotal evidence says otherwise. There's a full set of characters, with background in Pax Londinium, and the one complaint I have heard consistently about the book is that people didn't want them, and instead wanted more writing. Which I can understand as not core rules.

Papyrus titles, it immediately distracts me. My eternal suggestion is to look at a book from the genre you want and try to emulate their font usage and layout ideas. Bring it along this weekend and catch me and I'll opine some more in person....🙃

OK, I'm not an expert but a couple of things leap out at me. The first is that some of the images are weirdly aligned to the page, which leaves odd white space. The second is fonts. Fonts can act like art when done correctly, and whether you agree or not, some fonts are verboten - when I see the

Of course, if you had four tables, each running one of the different campaigns in a truncated form (as I did at LongCon) and had a shared digital version of the Setting Book, which was updated as it went along by which ever group got to the NPC or place first... that would be chaos, but awesome

There's a non-zero possibility that the BB game I played borrowed this mechanic, as I improv'd an over-50s life insurance policy advert in the middle of a murder mystery - which was great fun.

Inspectres was published in 2002 and our Buffy game was around then too. That said, I don't think I got a copy of Inspectres until about 2015 so who knows!

Essentially, as far as the players are all on board with this, it can be a great framework for a game. If people are wanting a more traditional sandbox game, it's going to be a problem though.

I also like to use specific TV tropes in games. I have successfully used a Big Brother diary room style 'speak to camera' thing, to allow little 4th wall breaking vignettes from PCs (stolen from Inspectres) I believe Brindlewood Bay has a commercial break mechanic as you describe (or like it)

So, Primetime Adventures is the TV show-as-RPG game that broke the mould for this sort of thing. Dead of Night is a brilliant horror game that rewards players for playing into horror genre tropes. I model a lot of my short campaigns on 8-session TV series www.omnihedron.co.uk/play/the-8-s...

I'm sure the still backwaters of the non-US RP server will be the least impacted. At least on there, the tendencies to have daft/offensive names will be curtailed.

Yeah, I was considering the possibility of EU copycat guilds and then I realised I can hide on PVE and RP servers.

Take some holiday in October Neil, they said. You need to start using your days, they said. It'll be good for you, they said... Neil books the week off. Engineers a week where he can be off. It's Scottish half term. So all the holiday prices are stacked up. Great. Just great.

When I painted minis as a kid, I was the king of dry brushing. When I relearned painting as an adult, it was one of the last techniques I returned to and I was shocked by how effective it can be, especially when doing a batch/army paint.

October is the new June - a month of multiple things happening across the month and somehow I have to keep what's happening when, with whom, and how, straight in my head despite two diaries The chances of me turning up to a con a week late or early are quite high.

The concept falters on two levels 1. Making obscene amounts of money rarely comes without a detriment to someone and thus you can create more problems than you imagine you can solve. 2. How little of that obscene amount of money actually gets remembered to be used for altruistic purposes...

Mine were donated to a hospital, alongside my Avengers, Teen Titans and *sob* X-Men, when I was at Uni, but my ever helpful mother who decided I didn't need them anymore because I was an adult. Oh the explosion when I returned and found out was exceptionally adult!!

This The story does a great job of giving us the Prestige (the Targs are bat shit crazy dictators who will do anything for power) and then reinforces it across the show, and STILL people are stunned that the beautiful young woman isn't the exception to this established truth. Nope, she's Targaryen!

The ('savage') Dothraki give no fucks about her silver hair or lineage but they respect the fuck out of her epic levels of fire resistance and willingness to burn everyone to a crisp. That's the arc earlier on right? She has a few dothraki, then barters her dragons for the Unsullied, then has a ...

And the moment it's sniffed at that JS has that bloodline suddenly it's a game changer for him. Because lineage trumps actual competence in Westeros, and that's what ultimately gets rejected at the end of the show.

Well, just a reality that we might not be able to make 10 people, so being a group within a nice larger casual guild gives the perks of guild-ness without scraping around

I'm going through the cupboard of gaming shite and making #diffcultdecisions about what to keep or throw. Then I'm going through the games shelves and making #diffcultdecisions about what to relegate to the new redesigned cupboard of shite. Your thoughts and prayers would be valued at this time

Well, I'm going to be trying to get some clarity on that soon. I see the nod for PvE servers in that they generally have more focused guilds for those who want to do content, but the RP servers have always been great fun for me. I also think we might end up as a dungeon group within another guild

Isn't it reflective of the hard-wired idea that the Targaryens are The Rulers, hence the deference she is shown. Comparative to the way we might say, think a global superpower is bat-shit crazy but still refer to their leader as the Leader of the Free World and expect them to do good things...

(Sepia off) Now we consume books. We run them once and move on. How many people go back to a game multiple times but instead chase the new hotness? That level of interaction requires a very different style of game presentation to say, AD&D.

Neil Gow @omnihedron.co.uk · 21/09/2026
Not really answering but offering more grist to the mill - has the way we use rulebooks changed. (Apply sepia filter here) Back in the day we bought a game and played it and played it. You returned to those books, you made characters for fun (remember that?) and you got better at doing that...

I've watched the first couple of episodes and it's ... Alright. Feels like a German version of Children of Men, but with more vampiric ominous-ness. Quite slow burn and more politics than I imagined.

Right, that's five suitably mangled characters created for one of my Furnace games. Without giving too much away, its a Game of Thrones blood opera and I swear if any of them survive this, I'll be stunned.... just as it should be.

*Well, actually*, there have only been five drawn five day test matches in England since 2020. You're more likely to see a test match completed in 3 days, which has had six in the same time. (Some complications on both with an abandoned test due to rain and one for the Queen dying)
