I’m not surprised. You build for the audience that you think you can sell to, and it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

I can think of very few times where “appeasement towards the humanities” in engineering disciplines has yielded benefits in the long run. Unicode comes to mind, and it may well be that AI development benefits from a clear prompt like “how do we represent X in code?” but I can’t see that attitude now

The majority of practical ML work is getting a lot of data through the network in reasonable time, and keeping all cores pegged. Tweaking parameters happens comparatively less. Most significant generational leaps in ML hardware since ~2016 were arch changes to resolve bandwidth bottlenecks

This (what I do for a living), along with my ethnicity, are impossible to discuss online, doubly so with people who show up online anonymously. I used to file these things in a little dropbox folder called “hatemail corpus”, but it just became too much work

I was reluctant to take the role of General co-Chair for I3D in a year I was switching jobs and having a child, but people’s willingness to lovingly contribute was something I simply didn’t account for. The program is amazing. I hope you show up. i3dsymposium.org

I’m beginning to wonder if this attitude is equally distributed. Where I come from, leftism doesn’t entail populism, and there’s hardly any mysticism about the harms of AI

Huge news: Naty Hoffman will be speaking at I3D 2026. I spent a lot of time brainstorming with him on the appropriate talk to give on the year he retires, and I think what he has is something every researcher will need to hear. Sorry for hyping, but I’m pumped.

New post on data centers and land use, where I go into my manifesto for why we should trust farmers less open.substack.com/pub/andymasl...

Data center land use issues are fake
We have plenty of land, data centers provide more revenue per unit area than any other building, and we should have way less farmland

Excited to announce our latest (submitted to) SIGBOVIK 2026 @harryqbovik.bsky.social paper: "SchmidhubAI: Accurate Historical Paper Attribution". We built an AI system that, given any modern AI paper, automatically determines which of its ideas were already published by Jürgen Schmidhuber.

the above is still true for python DSLs, but we managed to have Pytorch JIT and Warp be effective subsets with enough context. But I’d love an example. Not that it matters. It doesn’t.

I don’t even mean that extremely. but the cost of maintaining a new compiler and integrating a new language with new edge cases, while managing a sweeping refactor for code that’s entirely out of distribution, is a lot of engineering anti-patterns to fight given the new landscape

1. Sad that the Verse programming language is cancelled. It had some brilliant ideas that got tainted by only being available in lisp-likes 2. Beyond sentimental value, it doesn’t matter. Programming languages don’t matter anymore

One of my favorite findings: Positional embeddings are just training wheels. They help convergence but hurt long-context generalization. We found that if you simply delete them after pretraining and recalibrate for <1% of the original budget, you unlock massive context windows. Smarter, not harder.
