It’s not awkward. Her rejection at the christening had been swift. Painless. His heart had avoided the wood chipper.

She’s there now. No compass this time. She’s there, smiling, a man on her arm.

It’s the first cold day.

Olivia’s heading out the door after an overnight at the precinct when she notices the air, a crisp chill slicing through the darkness, tickling her nose.

She’s been here before, too many times. Here — tired, quiet, wandering to her car after hours in interrogation. Driving home, waiting for the sun to rise. Gripping the steering wheel, hands and heart equally numb. Here, turning up the radio, drowning out a silent wish for someone to hold her.

It’s different now, she reminds herself.

The radio’s off.

She makes the wish.
