Yikes Apple, what was that rap? Like… no hate to the artist, guy’s good. But the idea is VERY “high school bonus points assignment.”

You‘re giving them a full sixty seconds? Very generous.

I think they know he's an enormous asshole. It's why they voted for him. That was a feature. What they can't believe is that they got duped. They need to believe he's demon possessed because otherwise they'd have to do the kind of introspection that inevitably leads to a crisis of the self.

I don’t think it says very much. Tate likely brought his readership to Substack, not the other way around. His audience off Substack is enormous and dwarfs the majority of people who built their audience from Substack itself. Stands to reason he‘d fly to the top.

I feel like many Westerners struggle to believe this. But most Egyptians I know understands this intuitively. Our history is measured in thousands, not hundreds, of years. And it's filled with a variation of almost every story time has told in other countries. Makes it easier to trust in time.

"_____ is real" has become such a fingerprint of LLM-generated writing. It's wonderfully ironic.

Anyone, including non-Whites, can share that belief. And it's attractive because it holds within it the promise that if you just copy them stringently enough, you'll rise through the class system.

I know very few of us can do anything to help Lebanese people. But I hope at the very least you'll take a minute of silence today for them and all those who, in the last year, have died to satiate the greedy bloodlust of monsters.

Of all the places I want to visit in the world, Japan is certainly at the top of the list. For more reasons than just the public transportation, of course. But with a family, it's a rather expensive trip for four.

For the last year, there's been a gradual movement among the right-wing punditry against Trump and in support of Vance. I include MTG in this. Judging on the comments they've received on their videos and posts, I'm not so sure it's been effective. Maybe the NYT source is hedging their bets, lol

I just... don't get it anymore, man. I don't. I open up my laptop and it feels like it immediately bursts into flames with non-stop news. My phone feels the same way. But then I talk to people around me and 99% of them seem to be oblivious to the world. I feel like I have double vision.

As a Canadian (and worse, an Ontarian) I genuinely long to travel to places like London or Tokyo just to experience transit that meets the bare minimum of the definition.

The last year has felt like 100. I feel like I'm watching the last season of a show trying desperately to tie up all the plotlines it opened up over the last several decades.

I don’t think so. I think they will become integrated at the OS level so deeply that no one thinks to open a dedicated app because for it. I think it will be like web browsers. Most people will stick to what the OS gives them.

As a Canadian, I was expressing what I hope Americans will do next, regardless of the outcome. I’m hoping that they won’t make restoring hegemony the goal, but rather strive to regain trust through bold and principled action. Hegemony may be dead, but leadership is still on the table.

Omar Khafagy @omarkhafagy.bsky.social · 21/01/2026
if you’re making a flat observation that America will no longer enjoy the same hegemony it once had, I agree. Those days are over. Though I’d argue they were waning for many years anyway. But the meaning of that loss in dominance is not clear. And America still holds a ton of power.

Because Americans are going to fight hard to earn back that trust? Because Americans haven't given up and are intent on showing the world that theirs is not a history of always being right, but rather never surrendering? The resignation and defeat I've been seeing in Americans is what's scaring me.

Not on you, but I understand the reader. Email is one of those things people check because it can literally shape their day. Even when avoiding spoilers, they may still prioritize email. On your side, you can have a policy of avoiding subject lines that say too much. On theirs, they need filters.

Bro, same here. I cared so much about this one because my kid got into it and it was awesome seeing him so hyped. He fell asleep watching, and it’s going to suck to tell him the Jays lost. Though I bet he will take it better than me.

My theory: AI investment is a play for infrastructure. Layoffs are to soften the losses to placate shareholders. But this has always been about infrastructure, and not for AI. The long game? VR and AR environments with corporations operating as defacto virtual governments.

Every single time. But I try to frame it like this: I didn’t have a super productive day, I just had a normally productive week on a different daily schedule. Helps remind me that a day is a data point; it isn’t the trend line.

This shouldn’t need to be said. But it does, because a loud and vocal minority of chronically online people insist that moral absolutism is an adequate substitute for empathy and compassion. They preach a kind of secular moral purity—they’re fundamentalists without a church.

Don’t project your ideology on random people you’ve never met to make yourself feel good about the state of things. People rarely see themselves as the bad guys. They are capable of horrors precisely because they convince themselves that, in the right light, their behaviour is virtuous.

“They wear masks because they know they’re wrong.” No they don’t. They wear masks to avoid consequences, but they still think they’re right. Batman wears a mask. So do many other heroes. They see themselves like that, or they wear masks because it’s an “in-group” behaviour and they wanna belong.

There is one episode that has Lana, Archer’s mother Mallory, and Cheryl in the bathroom. Lana is talking to Mallory about Archer. Cheryl, applying lipstick, says, “suck it, Bechdel test.” In another, Cheryl hears the score of the show and mumbles to herself, “just ignore it, it’s non-diagetic.”

Haha well, for me Archer is funny because it’s farcical. Farce puts awful people in ridiculous situations that they often had a hand in creating. It’s kind of a safe, low stakes way to lambast the very worst of humanity. I find that funny. Also, Archer has a ton of ridiculously niche jokes.

So true. Also, much of what makes humour hit right is context. What we find funny in a sitcom or a stand up routine would feel very differently in a casual conversation. I laugh at cartoons like Archer. I’d hate to actually deal with him.
