Dear community,

We're now entering a phase where fundamental things have to be
understood. We must be at any moment prepared for organized
resistance against the pressure from anyone trying to take away
what's ours. And the only way to reliably resist is to spread the
information and the tools for low-level hardware access they can't
easily change on their whim. Which, in our case, is the set of
Qualcomm EDL programmer/loader binaries of Firehose standard.

The book has become a true classic: everybody wants to have read and nobody wants to read. Taking the opposite approach, I have read the book, despite not wanting to read it.

I like all of these but especially the quotes -- very "vivid assertions"

This feels like the same kind of vestigial metaphor as floppy-disk save icon or telephone headset icon (or even files and folders at this point)
They are called radio buttons because they look and operate in a similar manner to the push buttons on old-fashioned radios

I’ve been developing a take that computer history is one of the worst types of histories in terms of its body count on readers
It’s just misleading and full of exaggerations and romanticism rivaled only by that of war history
	Thereby ruining young lives

it was also interesting to recall the pre-gadget gadgets that were just [my old iPhone + old plastic toy + battery pack + projector] ziptied together, and how that already had compelling usage patterns (in some ways, we still haven't caught the gadget up to those!)

I think it's sad how e-mail, instant messaging, chat rooms, and text messaging have all sort of converged
They should all be slightly distinct forms

A number of hospitals have found it's far easier to train
nurses how to program and design UI/UX than it is to teach
IT pros to think like nurses.

i don't feel like this happened
The Anti-Mac principles outlined here are optimized for the category of users and data
that we believe will be dominant in the future: people with extensive computer
experience who want to manipulate huge numbers of complex information objects while
being connected to a network shared by immense numbers of other users and
computers

I feel like the best system for knowledge mgmt is the one you come up with for yourself because then it fits your idiosyncratic habits & you're emotionally committed to it due to sunk cost

Reminds me of this also (web.archive.org/web/20150318...)
The “Trust Me It Works” Hacks
The hackers who build projects like this are brave. Really brave. They walk into a project knowing that they won’t have a pretty face to demo. These projects are usually the most technically challenging and often the only output comes from the terminal. “Trust me, this means it works,” the hackers say. (And I do–and I respect them immensely.)

While flying on airlines today has its own unique set of hassles, actually booking a flight is
(relatively) painless. This wasn’t so in the 1950s, when schedulers went through racks of
index cards, each with a particular flight’s info, all stored in what resembled a library card
catalog. Only a few schedulers could fit around the card catalogs, and making a flight
reservation could take an hour or two. Through a chance encounter, an IBM executive met

"ends up feeling like continuous partial degraded mode" (in the sense of how.complexsystems.fail#5, I think)
yeah the long tasks are increasingly mysterious opaque like recognizing faces and backing up and performing software updates and results in this weird nondeterminism for the user cuz it's alllllmost seamless
but most ppl never click a button with any confidence that itll work for two days and then say "done!"
the indexing stuff ends up feeling like continuous partial degraded mode

QR Show was my excuse to (*extremely* last-minute) hack together a prototype that I've been thinking about for years -- turned my Folk handheld gadget into a QR code scanner: (point at the QR code, press trigger button to scan, then get output next to it; here, the QR code just says "Hello world!")
