When it comes to intervening, many people report that they do not know what to do or that they are afraid of making a situation worse in addition to other reasons. In this session, we learn 5 ways to intervene safely and explore case study examples. We’ll also discuss Allyship as an opportunity to grow and learn about ourselves, whilst building confidence in others.

On Saturday 14 June, Omagh will once again open Pride season in Northern Ireland with its fifth annual parade. The town will be awash with colour as the LGBTQ+ community and allies march through the town.

We're very excited to mark our fifth year, bringing a celebration of LGBTQ+ identity and culture to the town, along with a party atmosphere. We're doing so with financial support from the National Lottery Community Fund, for which we are so grateful.

While we're going to have plenty of fun on Pride day, we're also very concerned about threats to trans rights in particular, both globally and locally. Therefore, we've decided our theme this year is ‘Trans Lives Matter’, and we'll be putting this issue front and centre.

Parade participants are asked to gather at the Main Street car park on Kevlin Avenue from 1pm. Following speeches from LGBTQ+ organisations and other campaign groups, the parade will move off at 2pm.

I'm from Co Armagh and I returned from living in Manchester for 10 years back to Ireland in 2020. Living in England was a big part of my self acceptance and coming out story & I'm not sure I would have the same confidence and internal love had I not experienced my lesbianism in Manchester.

Being involved in Omagh Pride and Here NI is a treasured opportunity for me and sitting alongside my board peers or community members - having thoughtful and creative discussions on equality for queer women in North of Ireland is a dream come true. During the day I work in recruitment and I spend most evenings as an online BACP accredited counsellor, the latter definitely fills up my cup more!

As co-founder of Omagh Pride, being visible as a lesbian in a rural community is a joy and a responsibility. This Lesbian Visibility Week, I'm proud to stand in the fields, streets, and spaces that shaped me - showing that rural queer lives are vibrant, resilient, and beautifully at home.

We are dismayed and angered by Fermanagh and Omagh District Council's statement on the Supreme Court ruling. Full statement in alt text.

Omagh Pride is dismayed and angered by the statement from Fermanagh & Omagh District Council that it will be “implementing the provisions” of the recent British Supreme Court ruling, the implication of which is that trans people would be excluded from single-gender spaces. The Supreme Court’s ruling does not apply in Northern Ireland, as we have separate equality legislation, and we therefore cannot understand how or why the council has rushed to this position.

Coming on the back of the Stormont Executive’s puberty blocker ban, this is yet another decision that would have a deeply adverse impact on trans people, adding to isolation and putting their safety at risk. Trans people are a small minority who are, unfortunately, already marginalised in society and facing rising hate crime, in the context of growing demonisation from the far right, as well as sections of the media and the political establishment.

We reject the baseless implication that trans people represent a threat to women and girls. There has been a horrifying rise in gender-based violence, including femicide, in Northern Ireland over recent years, but this violence has overwhelmingly been perpetrated by cisgender men, not trans people. Misogynistic attitudes are fomented by precisely the same right-wing forces which are leading the attack on trans people and their rights. We reject cynical attempts to counterpose trans rights and women's rights from those who have no interest in either.

We call on our local elected representatives to immediately and clearly speak out against this statement from Fermanagh & Omagh District Council and to ensure that no changes to policy are implemented which would undermine the rights and risk the safety of trans people. We intend to contact our elected representatives on this issue and we encourage the wider LGBTQ+ community and allies to do the same.

If this decision is not immediately overturned, Omagh Pride will be working with others to organise a protest at the next meeting of the council at the Townhall in Enniskillen on the evening of Tuesday 6th May.
