Son of Atreus @olwags.bsky.social · 18/08/2026Seconding the PBS suggestion. You can donate to a station (like the local TPT) and it gets you access to their streaming service. Things are on it the day after airing, I believe. 010
Son of Atreus @olwags.bsky.social · 08/08/2026Saw the Sex Purge movie today. There’s a scene where they’re eating visibly cold pizza, but the actors are selling that good (“the best I’ve ever had!”) and that it’s hot out of the oven. Again, cheese was clearly not warm… A metaphor for the movie: clearly cold pizza we’re told is hot 000
Son of Atreus @olwags.bsky.social · 04/08/2026Classicists are rarely film critics, so it’s easy to get ahead of our skis when it comes to film/media criticism. 000
Son of Atreus @olwags.bsky.social · 04/08/2026The discourse is moving on from the Odyssey, but one thing I’d like to see more of from Classicists is long-term perspective, less “Nolan’s film is bad/good and here’s why”. What does his adaptation say about today? What does it say about Homer? How does it fit within the tradition? 100
Son of Atreus @olwags.bsky.social · 03/08/2026I liked the Odyssey more as a movie the second time. As an adaptation, about the same. I wish it had Achilles 000
Son of Atreus @olwags.bsky.social · 28/07/2026She even nods toward that toward the beginning, saying that adaptation requires variance from the source text. And yet, most of Nolan’s changes are too deviant to be good. Baffling 030
Son of Atreus @olwags.bsky.social · 28/07/2026I’m a former classicist who also liked the movie, and thought the review seemed to miss the mark. She allows that adaptations will make changes but rejects most of Nolan’s, sometimes for no apparent reason other than difference from Homer 040
Son of Atreus @olwags.bsky.social · 28/07/2026Her comments toward the end, though, about dehumanizing the Trojans and filming in the Sahara were apt. 010
Son of Atreus @olwags.bsky.social · 28/07/2026My biggest thing with her review was her seeming to want to have it both ways: 1) adaptations are free to make changes from the source, but 2) the changes Nolan made are Bad because they’re not Homer 110
Son of Atreus @olwags.bsky.social · 28/07/2026For me, religion is something fundamentally important to Ancient Greek (and Roman) life, including in the Odyssey. Nolan largely did away with the gods. How he decided to represent them reflects his modern audience. The decisions matter, even if they’re “wrong” 020
Son of Atreus @olwags.bsky.social · 28/07/2026Is Nolan’s armor “historically inaccurate”? Yes, duh. But so what? What does that choice do for his film and his story? The Agamemnon armor is visually striking if wildly inaccurate or practical. But it creates effects within his scenes (and in the armor’s absence, importantly) 120
Son of Atreus @olwags.bsky.social · 28/07/2026Nolan’s Odyssey was an awesome, if flawed, movie. Speaking only about Classicists, we tend to gate keep when it comes to modern adaptations in a way that does the field a disservice 121
Son of Atreus @olwags.bsky.social · 28/07/2026I taught a few classes with Emily Wilson’s translation (a class on the epic tradition, a classical mythology class) and I quite like it. Her Iliad is good too. Her review of Nolan’s missed the mark by a wide margin. Maddeningly so 000

Son of Atreus @olwags.bsky.social · 24/06/2026The cardinal at the beginning is unclear. The scene closer to the end (and in the trailer) appears to be more intentionally bad. It’s a memory of a vision, so there are levels of remove from reality. 110
Son of Atreus @olwags.bsky.social · 22/06/2026Usually check before/as an episode starts, but sometimes check part way if it’s feeling baggy. 000

Son of Atreus @olwags.bsky.social · 06/05/2026The only good adaptation of Homer would be one true to its roots: Footage of a series of poets reciting the poem in its entirety, not necessarily in order, in various ancient Greek dialects. 010
Son of Atreus @olwags.bsky.social · 21/04/2026Plato’s version of Socrates has him constantly asking his interlocutors to define their terms and the interlocutors famously took it well. But seriously, we need more definition in our discourse(s) 061

Son of Atreus @olwags.bsky.social · 18/12/2025Honestly, even if the movie stinks, it’s cool that Nolan is taking the swing. He’s coming off of a massive (and unlikely) success in Oppenheimer and he chose to use that opportunity to adapt the Odyssey. He’s going to get, likely already has, gotten people to read it for the first time. 000
Son of Atreus @olwags.bsky.social · 18/12/2025Well, it certainly caught my attention and, as a piece of marketing, I’d say that means it worked. Hopefully the movie’s good! 100
