#OTD in 1992, Dr. Mae Jemison launched into orbit as a mission specialist aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour making her the first Black woman to travel into space. An incredible life: + Physician (M.D., Cornell 1981) + Peace Corps Area Medical Officer in Sierra Leone & Liberia #WomenInSTEM 🧵
A classic NASA color portrait of Dr. Mae Carol Jemison, the first Black woman in space, captured in her official astronaut attire. She stands confidently in the center of the frame wearing a vibrant orange NASA flight suit with the American flag patch on her left shoulder, a blue-and-red NASA worm logo on her right, and a name tag reading “MAE JEMISON” above a mission patch. A large circular mission insignia for STS-47 (“Gibson APT Brown / Lee Davis Jemison Morgan”) is visible on her chest. She holds her white-and-black astronaut helmet with both hands in front of her torso, her short dark hair neatly styled, and offers a warm, radiant smile that conveys pride, determination, and joy. The background is a softly blended blue studio backdrop evoking the vastness of space. The composition blends technical precision with personal warmth, celebrating her historic 1992 flight aboard Space Shuttle Endeavour as Mission Specialist, where she conducted experiments in materials science and bone cell research. The image powerfully symbolizes her groundbreaking contributions to space exploration, diversity in STEM, and her lifelong commitment to making science accessible to all.A color portrait of Dr. Mae Carol Jemison, the first Black woman to travel into space and a pioneering engineer, physician, and advocate for science education. In this warm, studio-lit photograph from 2013, she appears as a confident woman with short, stylishly layered dark hair, smiling directly at the camera with a bright, engaging expression that radiates warmth, intelligence, and approachability. She wears a soft blue V-neck top, large silver hoop earrings, and a striking black cord necklace featuring a prominent circular turquoise pendant that rests at her collarbone. The background is a smooth, neutral gradient, keeping the focus entirely on her poised and professional presence. The overall composition is intimate and celebratory, conveying quiet strength and accomplishment while highlighting her enduring role as an inspirational figure in STEM and in women’s history.

57 years ago today, humans first landed on the Moon. The source code that helped get them there? It’s on GitHub. Margaret Hamilton led the MIT team responsible for Apollo’s onboard flight software. (Image credit: Draper Laboratory; restoration by Adam Cuerden, via Wikimedia Commons.)

Cancer Cachexia is an unintentional weight loss and muscle wasting that can reduce quality of life in most cancer patients including pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma. We developed a framework that distinguish cachexia stages using blood biomarkers. Read our paper here www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Terence Tao doesn’t think AI will replace human mathematicians anytime soon, but he does consider it well suited to helping solve certain types of complex mathematical problems: ones that can be broken into thousands of small, manageable subproblems.

With automated proof-checkers, a problem can be broken up into small chunks, solved bit-by-bit, then reassembled with confidence that every piece is correct. For some, this heralds a new area in…

Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala is one of the most powerful & influential women in global #finance. A globally renowned Nigerian economist, she serves as the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) & is known for her sharp anti-corruption stance & financial pragmatism. Born #OTD in 1954.
A charming portrait of Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the historic Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the first woman and African to lead the body. Facing forward against a solid black background, she smiles warmly with a confident, joyful expression. She is elegantly dressed in traditional Nigerian attire, featuring a textured navy blue Ankara dress with a rounded neckline. On her head, she wears a matching, structured blue Gele head tie, meticulously folded with silver-blue patterned accents. She accessorizes with rectangular, wire-rimmed eyeglasses, dangling beaded blue earrings, and a large, multi-stranded statement necklace composed of polished lapis lazuli-blue beads arranged in a layered bib style. The tight composition focuses heavily on her face and shoulders, using professional, soft studio lighting to create an uplifting, commanding, and culturally proud mood that honors her legendary global leadership.
