It's always a pleasure to write about my favourite animal — yes, sea sponges! 🧽 They might look a little strange & lack any kind of brain, but they sure can do wild things. Check out my piece for @aunz.theconversation.com to find out why metamorphosing sponge larvae love sunset! 🌅

How brainless sea sponges use sunset as a cue to prepare for metamorphosis
Sea sponges are some of the world’s simplest animals – but even so, the rhythm of night and day kicks off a crucial stage of their life cycle.

Adding some deep-sea wonder to your scroll💙✨️ This siphonophore, Erenna richardi, can be identified by the massive clusters of tentilla (the side branches of the tentacle) at the end of the tail (siphosome). In Monterey Bay, this species has been observed at average depths of about 1,100 meters.

These psychedelic swirls resemble a brain, but in fact, they were taken just in front of a brain—in a mouse’s nose to be exact. Read more: cen.acs.org/analytical-c... #CENChemPics by David Brann/Datta Lab. #chemsky 🧪
A slice of a mouse epithelium shows the swirls and folds that are inside the organ in blue and violet. Many of the swirls are lined with green regions or tiny blobs of green against a dark field.

Most of us eat too much salt that's hidden in processed foods. If food manufacturers switched to potassium salt we could all better protect our health & manufacturers still protect their profit margins with potassium-salty foods instead #Salt #SciComm #WHO #Health #processedFood #food #potassium

Why the WHO has recommended switching to a healthier salt alternative
It’s a positive step, but there will be a few challenges to realising the full benefits to public health.
