Sometimes you're reading along, and a line just cuts right through your heart like a razor. From "The Lesser Bohemians" by Eimear McBride. #BookSky

I distinctly remember this moment. The world is covered with words! (Thanks to Mrs. Horton, my First-Grade teacher back in the late Bronze Age...) #BookSky From "Books Promiscuously Read: Reading as a Way of Life" by Heather Cass White

So many moments in this book that bring tears. "The Skin and its Girl" by Sarah Cypher. It's kind of a secret classic... (I don't even think the author knows how good her book actually is.) #BookSky

Crayon pics done by kids at Five Guys. The lower right shows a crime scene.. stick figures of 4 guys, one of whom is shooting the fifth guy. Caption is "4 guys now".

Advice from a long-time veteran of the sinus wars. If you don't already have this. Get this. Any big box store or grocery or the Jungle place or whatever. Get it. Read the directions. Use it.

Years ago I gave my neighbor, a young single mother with no car, a ride. In conversation it became apparent she literally did not know the difference between the Vietnam War & WWII. I told her my father was in WWII, but my young BIL was in Vietnam. Americans do not understand the history of Nazism.

The reflex to hate is a real thing. Darkly (and unintentionally) funny footnote from Hofstadter's Anti-Intellectualism in America:

I'm a gnarly old dude, but I think I'm channeling my inner 16-year-old. I think maybe(?) I read this book as a teenager, I don't even remember. And maybe she's not quite a seasoned full-bag-of-tricks novelist yet, but MAN, it's intense. This stabs right to the heart. #BookSky

This is a rough book to read. The writing is brilliant though. And this is definitely Florida. #BookSky
It was kind of a rough, honky-tonk waterfront place, no screens, a
porch out over the waterway, the air heavy with sodden mosquitoes
and their thin bloody whine, and that liquid, chirping Florida night,
citrus and salt and boat gasoline. Palmettos and brown dirt and guys
with ponytails drinking beer and bourbon, ignoring the women
dressed in tight T-shirts, denim, and ruffles, outfits in styles that for
them had remained unchanged since the 1970s but were currently back
in fashion. Fat children up past their bedtime threw pieces of bread
and french fries into the oil-slicked, greasy water, poked sticks through
the slits in the floor and at one another, the Tiffanys and Heathers and
Jasons who would grow up to take their parents’ places at the bar.

Robert Caro spends thousands of pages documenting and detailing what a power-mad duplicitous repellent monster of a man Lyndon Johnson was -- and then we get this: #booksky

John Kenneth Galbraith.
"Men meet together for many reasons in the course of business. They need to instruct or persuade each other. They must agree on a course of action. They find thinking in public more productive or less painful than thinking in private. But there are at least as many reasons for meetings to transact no business. Meetings are held because men seek companionship or, at a minimum, wish to escape the tedium of solitary duties. They yearn for the prestige which accrues to the man who presides over meetings, and this leads them to convoke assemblages over which they can preside. Finally, there is the meeting which is called not because there is business to be done, but because it is necessary to create the impression that business is being done. Such meetings are more than a substitute for action. They are widely regarded as action."

I knew there was a reason I was reading this book. From the 3rd vol. of Robert Caro's bio of LBJ. The moment the Democratic Party became the party of civil rights. The young-ish (37 yrs old) mayor of Minneapolis, Hubert Humphrey, speaking at the 1948 Democratic convention in Philadelphia. #BookSky

Google maps search result saying "Google Maps can't find Gulf of America" right next to the actual Google map showing the Gulf of Mexico clearly labeled as "Gulf of America".
