DR. BENJAMIN RUSH'S CELEBRATED HEALTH PILLS.
That great philanthropist and eminent physician, Dr. Benjamin Rush, invented a universal remedy for disease, and denominated it his infallible Health Pills. His immense practice and wonderful cures proved and certified it, the ne plus ultra of specifics. Had he done nothing more for the benefitted [sic] of mankind, or to commemorate his name as a public penefactor [sic], this would have been sufficient.
For all billious complaints, and a purifier of the blood, the world is challenged to produce its equal. The only gennine Rush Pill, compounded from the original recipe, is sold by the Empire Company, No. 176, Broad-way, and its authorized Agents throughout the United States. All others are spurious.

I was reading about things this morning and came across the historical idea (this is from 1900) that if you take small amounts of poison & increase it slowly over time, you'll become immune to it. This is called mithradatism. It's a cool idea that doesn't work: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mithridat… 1/

It may seem obvious that this is the room we needed - but honestly, we could have kept doing the same thing forever. It was fine. Changing the exam room won't save lives or make us more money. But I'm so excited to invite families into a nicer space for their kids. ❤️7/7

Issues remaining: the door is still easy for everyone to open (and slams hard); the light can be turned on and off repeatedly; some people love to play in the sink. Those were expensive fixes. 6/7
Same room, lights on

Cabinets and drawers locked with magnets (trash will be in a cabinet). A really big projection device/glowing lights machine (this was donated to our specialty clinic years ago and has been hanging out). One big chair that can be moved out for wheelchairs. 5/7
As described, but there's also a mat on the floor and a big beanbag (wipeable)

So I asked our clinic and our families: how could we do better? Six months later, CHECK THIS OUT: our sensory-friendly exam room. 🎉🥹❤️ No exam table. No computer. Low lights. Toys on the wall to play with. Soft balls that can be thrown but won't hurt. 4/7
A low light exam room with bright hexagons on the wall (they turn on and off when you touch them) and a spinny wheel with little balls inside, and projected fish

One kid unplugged the computer 3 times. The mom was so apologetic, but I was the one who was sorry. I put her kid in the worst possible room, and now we're supposed to have a serious conversation about medicine while she's worried about manners. We needed to do better. 3/7
The computer, on an arm from the wall, with a looooooong cord to the outlet (kids also bang on the keys, and run into the computer arm when it's extended)

Not bad for many of my patients - but I'm a pediatric neurologist. I see 3 year olds & kids with young siblings. I see kids with disabilities. My kids touch the trash can, play with the stirrups on the (2nd hand) exam table, pull the tools off the wall, try to break that computer arm. 2/7
An exam room with an exam table with the gynecological stirrups pulled out (stirrups I have never, ever used)
