And yes… I somehow made it into the publication myself – in a red “spawning suit” 😄 But let’s be honest: the real prize goes to the male in his impressive breeding colours. Thanks to our small association for a great trip – and to co-authors for helping bring this all the way to publication 🙌

It turns out that this could point to something quite interesting 👉 lumpsuckers potentially spawning outside the classical spring season, which is also when the fishery targets roe-bearing females.

It all started quite randomly. My good friend Rasmus spotted two lumpsuckers/lumpfish, and only because I’m a bit of a fish nerd with a biologist’s mindset, it struck me that seeing a couple mating in October might not be “business as usual”.

Some time ago, I wnt on a casual trip to Frøya, Norway. It turned out to be a bit more than just a fun observation… The scientific paper is now out 👉 onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.... Small observations can sometimes open up new questions.

You'll be working hands-on with experimental fish physiology, fish behaviour, and investigate climate tolerance of lumpsuckers (aka lumpfish, Cyclopterus lumpus), a culturally and ecologically important species in decline.

DTU Aqua to investigate the biology of an endangered species, funded by Seabreak
The lumpsucker has been overlooked, but knowledge is crucial if we are to protect and preserve it. With financing from the newly founded charity Seabreak, DTU Aqua is starting a pioneering project to map the biology of the lumpsucker and investigate how environmental changes affect its living conditions.

Squid die when they reproduce. We estimate that sinking squid carcasses locks away 11-12 Mt carbon/year in the deep oceans. Increasing squid fisheries interrupts this sequestration and sends it to our dinner plates - where it is respired to the atmosphere. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

The sandeel's sense of sand
The sandeel plays an important role in the marine ecosystem as a key species in the food chain. Now research shows that sandeels are picky about the sandy bottom where they burrow – and this makes them vulnerable to potential changes to their habitats, which are sand and gravel banks.
