By now, most people will have heard of National Power. That it's one of the country's new power generators. And that it's one of the biggest power generators in the world.
But you shouldn't let its sheer size mislead you.
This is no profit-before-people, faceless giant answerable only to the balance sheet.
Even in strictly commercial terms, an attitude like that would make no sense.
A business that generates more than half the electricity for
England and Wales couldn't do business successfully if it neg- lected the environment.
As National Power's own Statement of Environmental Policy says, it is dedicated to ". meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."
These are just some of the ways National Power intends to fulfil that aim.
AIR CONDITIONING.
The future will see all new National Power coal and oil-fired power stations equipped with flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) plant which reduce sulphur emissions by 90%.
This is in addition to the world's largest FGD plant now under construction at Drax Power Station in North Yorkshire.
Special burners are also on the way to reduce the emission of nitrogen oxides by an estimated 30% by the turn of the century.
Carbon dioxide emissions are also decreasing, for each unit of electricity produced, through continuing improvements in thermal efficiency.
All this has obvious benefits for energy conservation, the slowing down of the greenhouse effect, and the reduction of acid rain.
In all, National Power's emissions-control programme will cost over £1.5 billion.
