Conservatives by definition don’t like cultural change so they have to make it sound worse, like a virus! Everyone on the right quite quickly deciding that the England football team are actually not English somehow does not count as social contagion

A very good faith retelling of my posts! Thanks buddy, I can tell you’ve been having a really fun day so I’ll let you get back to it.

I’m going to bow out here, because this is a pointless conversation - between two members no less! Every one of your posts is just Can I win Can I win Can I win Like, ok sure

I can’t really think of any others that fit the circumstances I described above, this was a notably controversial motion as we both know!

oldskoolrando.bsky.social @oldskoolrando.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
My personal opinion is that if the membership are going to overrule most of the party’s elected representatives (who will then have to defend the new policy), it should take more than under 1% of the membership to make the vote quorate/binding. You didn’t vote either, maybe this is an issue

oldskoolrando.bsky.social @oldskoolrando.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
From the green groups I’m in from my area, who are all naturally pro-Palestine and generally see this as an own goal. You can have different opinion ofc, and with only 1.8k people having input neither of us can prove our position. I think this is a problem, esp when our representatives were against
100
oldskoolrando.bsky.social @oldskoolrando.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Sure, and you still haven’t - I do think though that this is an example of where the greens’ more member-led approach has weaknesses, and lead to what is here a bad framing that I doubt most members would fully support. The motion is a mess and I wish there had been more leadership from the party.

oldskoolrando.bsky.social @oldskoolrando.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
I’m a green member - we may be talking at cross purposes here, do you mean people could vote on whether the motion went to conference at all? Bc I wasn’t aware of an online conference vote, and only 1.8k votes from 230k members would suggest there wasn’t one
100
oldskoolrando.bsky.social @oldskoolrando.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Could we? Where/how? Or do you mean pre-conference?
100
oldskoolrando.bsky.social @oldskoolrando.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
And entryism may be an abused term, but it is true that the greens’ policy here leaves them more open, so that 1k activists out of 230k members can have a huge impact - a feature that may not always work out well
100
oldskoolrando.bsky.social @oldskoolrando.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
I think there’s a lot of eliding the difference between “pro-Palestine” (just about every green member) and supporting this specific motion and wording. Is this an accurate reflection of members’ views? Personally I doubt it’s how most members would chose to word the party’s policy on Palestine.
100
oldskoolrando.bsky.social @oldskoolrando.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
I think one way it can be considered worrying is that it creates a clear weak point for entryism - in this case a motion that will have little positive effect, quite a lot of negative, wasn’t supported by the leader or any of the MPs that will have to explain it, based on small number of ppl

oldskoolrando.bsky.social @oldskoolrando.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
I would have supported all kinds of other statements - Israel is committing genocide, is a terror state etc. But this framing seems self-destructive and unnecessarily philosophical, rather than policy focused. I think a lot of green members are dismayed that 1k conference attendees have forced this

oldskoolrando.bsky.social @oldskoolrando.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
I find it interesting that this is often framed as “personalised” music - take away social context and interactions with others, and what “taste” is left? It’s not like musical taste is genetic, it’s socially constructed over one’s life. All this “personalised” music will end up sounding the same.

oldskoolrando.bsky.social @oldskoolrando.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Quite hard to imagine what “infinite personalised music” could mean in a world where all social elements of music have been removed - personalised how? Does he think music taste is genetic?

So, one seventh of the people paid UC are in their twenties? Given that there aren’t 7 working decades of adult life, this is not out of whack, surely?

I think the bigger problem is clearly “how do we persuade a handful of very rich people that it’s worth growing their pile of money at a slower rate, in exchange for a liveable world for their children?”

Carbon capture is exactly why “net zero” is actually, truly, stupid - from an environmental perspective. The “net” part was all about setting up trade in carbon credits, and “offsetting” with carbon capture tech that barely exists, rather than straight-up reduction of emissions.

The same has been said about the kind of baby monitors that monitor movement, pulse etc - not actually reassuring, just a route to ultra-attentive anxiety

Sidebar about Heinlein’s politics - when he found out that new wave sci fi authors were taking out a full page ad in a prominent sci fi journal, stating their opposition to the Vietnam war, Heinlein and other members of the old guard organised a pro-war statement for the opposite page.

Bleak and awesome - really like “starfish” too, about deep sea workers with horrifying body mods to help them work underwater, with the core conceit that only intensely weird people would take on such a job

Blocking roads is illegal, after the tories put in legislation specifically to target environmental protestors. Can just use that, for starters

It should be a cause for serious concern that the majority of kids across all walks of life and ability levels, simply do not enjoy their time at secondary school especially. But our culture isn’t interested in the experiences of teenagers, and the architects of this failure have other priorities.

Ah, but it will have prepared them for rigorous academic success in our collapsing university system! Well, not if one speaks to anyone still lucky enough to have a job teaching first year students - and for those not following an academic pathway it’s hardly going better.

oldskoolrando.bsky.social @oldskoolrando.bsky.social · 28/08/2026
Under his watch there was a push to dismiss engagement and enjoyment as woo-woo stuff that would be all sorted when kids started to feel a sense of academic success, and the results are in - we made an already test-obsessed system even more punitive and distrusting of children!

oldskoolrando.bsky.social @oldskoolrando.bsky.social · 28/08/2026
There is plenty of empirical evidence that children hate the recent shift in education policy - v poor levels of kids feeling a sense of belonging in school vs oecd countries, only half saying there is an adult in school who really cares about them (from gov’s figures!).

every billionaire & tech mogul, they all want to be adored & celebrated without doing the things Dolly did with a fraction of the power & money. What she had, she gave away. I'm sure she was comfortable (& that's good!). But she just relentlessly helped. It's not that difficult. Love. Care. Help. 💚🌸

As shown by the core sentiment imo - “it’s not 2020 anymore”. You guys had your fun but it’s time to put BLM strictly in the past and get back to the way we like to do things. His inclusion of that phrase really shows that he knows what this is about.

The same people are very angry at the idea we should be teaching teenage boys this kind of thing in school, because according to them this would make teenage boys feel ashamed of their masculinity

Metal bands can have so many “but the vocals” moments where they come in and it doesn’t fit what you hoped for / expected, whereas those were unexpected but really awesome, like steam escaping some kind of industrial kettle. RIP

In the UK, where the national health service was created after the Second World War to provide healthcare free at the point of use, funded by general taxation…those damn dentists dug their heels in to carve out their own territory, and so an “nhs dentist” is still hard to find :(

That American culture is desensitised to the violence it inflicts around the world because their wars have become sensationalised media events?

Why? People should care about what legacy they leave, and yes that includes public figures perhaps having to consider that if they’re a bad person in life, people won’t say nice things about them when they die - which is, btw, how it works for everyday people.

The implication that the CoE relies on donations, and that therefore his threat for the headbanger right to stop paying their subs has weight, is really something. You can’t pay to get the Jesus you want guys!

Aside from the fact I’ve not been interested in defending liking a post that contains a picture of that T-shirt (not great, but hardly a massive crime) - this is obvious false equivalence. Hundreds of thousands of people are actually dead man, that’s not funny

Come on man, I’m happy to accept “Zack should go on his phone less” but I really think “war crimes klaxon” is beneath us all, when we’re talking about 100s of thousands dead in Iraq, and the same again in Gaza. That’s not banter material.
