Halfway through A Drop of Corruption by Robert Jackson Bennett and a really great mystery novel set in a fascinating world. The balance of a whodunnit with some excellent world building is just a real joy to read. Now to finish this to get into the third knew.

Think we all owe Rob Liefield an apology as clearly this Captain America was a tribute to this man.

The two opening paragraphs but especially the second one captures so much of the frustration and anger at the lost opportunity and petty shite form the last 2 years.
My main reflection, after watching Andy Burnham's first conference speech, came not as a positive assessment of Burnham, but as a negative assessment of Keir Starmer. The speech the former leader gave in the same slot in 2025 was fine, just about; in my post conference Renewal reflection a year ago, I wrote that it was 'a stay of execution not a reprieve' and that overall 'the conference probably went about as well as the leadership could have hoped'.

I feel the last three months, and in particular the conference speech, have allowed me to fully understand the meaning of the phrase 'poverty of low expectations'. With Starmer, one was always reaching for the crumbs, desperately trying to find the points to praise, and that reach was tiring and contorting. He was a bad leader surrounded by unpleasant people who seemingly had little respect or regard for the party he led

Find this an interesting piece as is this Pessimism fatigue? Or is this just what people naturally do which is adapt and keep living even in grim circumstances? Surely is a good trait that we as a species don't stop living our lives just because these risks are on the horizon?

Seeing the discussions about the 100k childcap- I found the polling about it quite fascinating. Headline stat is 45% against and 38% for. And I thought the opposition would be less well off vs the more well off. But look at the breakdown below. Biggest opposition is from those over 50
Poll about getting rid of childcare cap for those earning over 100k.
Opposition overall is 48% against and 38% for.
In 18-24 And 25-49 is either even split or more positive. But over 50 is 55% against and 30% for then in over 65s it's 57% against and 30% for.

Saw this excerpt from the shadow chancellor's speech and what is this absolute bullshit claiming to appeal to young people?
Many Labour MPs spend their time talking about safe and legal routes for asylum seekers to come here.

Well, what about safe and legal routes for our own young people to get a job, buy a home, have a good life? Does that not count?

Me: Really enjoyed recent New Statesman articles and politics coverage. I think I'll give their £5 for 5 weeks subscription a go as seems like some good changes have happened. Also Me on seeing the first article on their website today: God Fucking Dammit
Another article from John Gray about the end of times.

Nothing better then drawings of animals that cross the weight threshold to become slightly adorable. My personal favourite is the BundoBust tiger. Clearly he's backed a vegetarian restaurant as a moment of man-eating on the lips is a lifetime on the hips

Hate to say it but this is actually a savvy policy from the conservatives to try and rebuild their base with young(ish) professionals.

Had to make the meme based on this ridiculous story
The office meme saying corporate needs you to find the difference between these pictures and Pam saying they're the same picture.

Except it is a picture of Hawks from My hero academia and hawkeye from marvel comics.

Then another one of the same series implying that theft is ok because this jar of chickpeas tastes so good. Feel like I'm going mad and probably ignorance here but I'm not spending £3 on a jar of chickpeas or butter beans in this economy
An add implies that you can violate the 8th commandment because this jar of chickpeas tastes so good

Most bizarre thing about a recent trip to London was these incredibly prevalent ads trying to suggest that butter beans in a jar are the next up and coming snack. Surely no one is casually munching through a jar of these? Is this a protein thing?
An add of someone munching through a jar of butter beans like a bag of crisps

Will say if you want a book to remind you how remarkably functional and helpful social media uses to be Id recommend Escape by Marie Le Comte. Really great read on being the generation that grew up with the internet. And I'd forgotten how useful Facebook was for socialising back in uni.
