I doubt consciousness will emerge spontaneously unless an AI is specifically trained in that direction. Frontier models have shown us that advanced intelligence is possible without consciousness. It's probably more an artifact of natural selection rather than an emergent property of intelligence.

Saying LLMs are just "next token predictors" is like saying human brains are "just gene-propagation engines." True in the literal sense, but completely useless for explaining what the system is actually capable of.
