Of course they do. They understand exactly what is happening which in fact is precisely why they choose time and again to make the editorial decisions that they do. Their editorial framing decisions are made out of fear that trump who they correctly understand to be an authoritarian will retaliate

All of that said, I still think that in bartending as in any walk of life, people are generally inclined to be accommodating and agreeable toward those with whom they have routine interactions. I.e. bartenders are likely to overserve regulars as a sort of courtesy

Fair enough then. I myself have never tended bar and don’t frequent too many bars these days. When I used to go out, I would always tip by the drink if paying cash at a dive bar or as a pct of the bill at a swankier place. I will concede to your knowledge on the topic.

This is hard to argue in generalized terms, but my intuition is that many of the folks who are being over served are regulars. There have been studies demonstrating that a small proportion of the population drinks the vast majority of total alcohol consumed. Not sure why that wouldn’t apply to bars

Omg bud, I’m sorry if you or someone you know is a good, responsible bar tender who exercises good judgement. My point stands that this is in fact a relatively widespread phenomenon. There are lots of great cop out there too, but that doesn’t mean there are also systematic abuses of power.

There are real bars that operate like this. Many bars give customers tokens for free drinks after they have purchased a certain amount of drinks —like a reward points model. But more broadly bar tenders infamously do not cut off drunks when they should because those are their best customers
